The Right Mindset when Rolling With Stronger People in BJJ

  • Do you get frustrated with bigger stronger people in BJJ?
This is the question I got from Dan recently. Dan is a White Belt in BJJ and is becoming very frustrated when rolling with partners in his BJJ gym who are powerhouses. They just overpower all of his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques.
In this video I address firstly the fact that getting Frustrated is the worst place you can let your mind go.
Getting frustrated leads to anger, irritation and a complete abandonment of the problem solving mindset that is needed for Brazilian Jiujitsu.
I mean if you're not going to quit BJJ. Then understand that this is sort of what you signed up for. You signed up for tough stuff that is going to push you and make you better. And sometimes it's not easy.
After this, I share the way that I approach bigger stronger people in BJJ.
The big strategy for me is to focus first on weathering the storm and relaxing to a certain degree.
Since I can't assert myself head on against the person. I take my time until the opportunity is right for me to attack. Once I feel my opening I go 100%.
I hope this video is helpful for you and your BJJ. Especially if you're up against a bigger stronger opponent. Whether during rolling in your BJJ gym or during a Brazilian Jiujitsu competition.
    Thanks!

I'm a 5'11 240lb brown belt and I have a few guys that purposely want me to grind them into the mat - It's hilarious. But they want that intensity to learn how to survive pressure. It helps them in competition training. After one of our purple belts (145lbs) just came in 2nd in the Absolutes he told me that it was my pressure that taught him how to survive and win! Quite often I will pause and tell them what would work to get me off them. It can be a win-win scenario if we keep our egos in check. Of course I have some big young guns that take it to me too:)

Bigger guys steamrolling me have been my keys to improvement. I also try to use minimal strength on smaller guys & really try to play their game so that they can keep improving their jits as well as my own speed game (I'm 5'10 & 183)- this all of course only works if you're all mates & not trying to get one up on one another in a personal fashion, very hard to cooperate like this in a highly competitive & non-friendly environment.

I was one of the bigger guys in our gym back in my hometown (6'0 205). It frustrated me to no end that a lot of guys I rolled with would say "the only reason why you got me is because you are bigger." Completely demoralizing when you work hard to learn new techniques and then get shit on because you are just bigger. They didn't take in to account that I trained harder and longer then they did. When bigger guys than me were in the gym beat me it never crossed my mind that they got me because they were bigger/stronger. They caught me because I made a mistake.

    • @mirjamheijn5214

Sometimes people use this type of demoralization because it works. Keeping good morale and desire to win is important. If you're not practising to win, then you're practising to lose.

Always Great Advice Chewy! (just to dovetail on it)...as a white belt myself, I always find time in the class to go get smashed on by the bigger guys. like chewy said in previous videos, put yourself in the most uncomfortable situation you can to get use to being there. I have learned a ton from that. just surviving as a white belt getting smashed on by 250 - 320+ lb (blue/purple belts) is an award I wear proudly. if I can survive their assaults and weather their storms I feel like I've won. (...and have learned along the way as well ;) ...don't give up Dan!

Depends, I train with bigger better people on purpose. However it's with the understanding that I need to work tomorrow morning (be able to pay gym dues) and train 2 more days this week (be able to move) I can't do that with a dislocated elbow and my whole left side purple and swollen. It translates to real life, as an older guy it's likely I'll be targeted for a mugging by a larger criminal. The young folks i roll with likely will have to deal with some smaller faster experienced young criminal who's pride got hurt in the parking lot. They get used to a fearless speedy guy with odd angles, I get used to a powerhouse with a vice grip, it's win win. You want to learn that painful chess match on the mat before needing it in the parking lot. Best thing to do in life of course is find a safer better illuminated parking lot but life happens when you least expect it.

This is basically my strategy when rolling as a white belt. I'm kind of reactionary I just keep myself safe. I might not be able to pull off a lot of things so I just make sure that they are not able to either and then if I see a moment of opportunity I go for it. That's one of the most powerful self-taught lessons I've ever discovered in Jiu-Jitsu and I'm happy to see it acknowledged here.

The key way to advance as a white belt (or any belt for that matter) is to test your limits by training with those of a higher skill level. If said opponents are much bigger and stronger you will eventually learn to evolve with them and improve your performance with hard training. This is how world class jiu jitsu is learned, by learning to hang with those that are far better than you in every way.

Im a 2 years in white belt and I absolutely love going against giant strong begginers (Im 145 lbs). It's basically a chance for me to check if my technique is as sharp as I think it is and to see if I can handle being pressured and escape from bad positions.
You gotta think if you get attacked in the street it's gonna be a scenario like this, a big guy with no technique and a lot of strength.
The first couple of minutes are pretty hard but once that's over they empty their gass tank and I just do whatever I feel like doing to them.

Just a tip for bigger people -
Be wise with any advice you would like to give to someone you just rolled with if they’re 50-70lbs+ lighter then you and you two are in the same general skill area. If you notice something glaring that’s one thing. But understand that your sheer size can feel the same as rolling with a significant skill difference.

I'm 5'5" 150 lbs white belt. I purposely search out the big guys. For one I don't have to worry about them complaining when I go full tilt. Also, in self defense I don't get to chose the size of my attacker. It helps teach me which moves I know or if I've only been muscling them in on small/new guys. It helps me get stronger and to learn to handle the intensity of being overpowered. Best of all when I go back to my own weight class the guys feel small

I think Prof. Chewy nailed the technical approach but for a new BJJ-kan I’ll also mention that body conditioning is required, skill can only make up for so much difference in brawn and sometimes you should decline rolls. If you roll with someone, there’s a body weight difference, they routinely cause you injury or you’re not getting value from rolling with them... then don’t roll with them.

I appreciate you and your channel!100%, I’m at a Rilion gracie gym in South Carolina, my instructor is a 4th stripe brown belt. We do leg locks at the White belt level after the basics. My instructor says he wants to give me a blue belt as fast as possible, I’ve been studying gracie bjj on and off for 6 or 7 years and have been training professionally for about 7 months. I don’t have a stripe yet. But my instructor sounds almost like he wants to bypass the stripes just bc I’ve been doing better than the white belts over the short time I’ve been attending my gym. My question is actually about the style. I’m learning “machine gun” competition style bjj. Should I switch to a gym that makes you learn gracie combatives in order to get a blue belt? I’m training solely for self defense. I just feel like I’m not bad at defense and offense, I just don’t know about being at a blue belt level, plus I haven’t really learned much at my current gym

I know this is an older one (though I'm only just seeing it). I'm a pretty light guy. I'm 5' 8'' maybe 5' 9'' and weigh about 150-155 and I find what works well for me against those "powerhouse" types is being assertive. I do anything and everything I can to put the big guy on their back and keep them there, primarily in side control. Mount I found unless I get a high mount anything else will just get me tossed off. A lot of those guys are used to throwing their weight around and catching them unawares early by being offensive can pay dividends. Especially if they aren't used to being on their back and thereby will tire out much faster. Just my experience as a fairly light weight guy.

  • @Osprey1994

Toughest people for me were what I called the silverbacks, the Marine, and the basket ball player. Silverbacks were these 2 white belts who were close large but solid and could really punish me if they got into a dominant position. The Marine was just that a white belt who was short but from the Marines, and holy hell was he strong and fast (instincts were super good too). Lastly we had the Basketball player, and he was the most difficult to roll with because at 6'5+ his reach was insane. Now the nice thing is that these types of people are great I'd you are training for self defense, it gives you an idea of how you would have to handle an person of that build in a fight. Only difference being that you'd be surprised at how scary a 7month white belt is against someone who hasn't done BJJ before.

What I do is keep the calm and survive, I wait until they make a mistake and I try to submit them. Instead of wrestle I play very slow but explosive and it works for me. Use the speed and explosiveness against big opponents.

When I started I would get irritated with bigger guys going hard. But soon I realized that they were just working, and this is an opportunity for me to work on something important: I worked hard to not get submitted. The next level is to use as little energy as possible while doing so. It sounds funny but another way to put it would be 'to avoid submission efficiently'. Sometimes the biggest hurdle is to put your ego aside.

Maybe I'm simple minded. I started out at 150. It's unlikely I'll ever weight 230 with low body fat naturally. So I hit the gym hard. Now I walk at 180 and compete at 170. I didn't become a mass monster powerhouse but breaking grips to make things happen became more feasible. Try Add ing pull-ups, chin-ups, towel hangs, rows, bench press deadlifts and squats to your fitness routine. Start with very light weight and perfect form and play with if from there to see what works for you.

We have something to learn from everyone. Even giant strong dudes that just smash you, think about this; in a street fight or during a tough match, they're not gonna go easy on you. They're gonna try and kill you. It's better to deal with it in training and learn how to overcome with techniques NOW better than not know how to deal with it later on when it means the absolute most.

I'm that size and that weight roughly and far from fat...I got sprinters legs from cycling and a broad shoulders. admittedly some my weight of it is simply because I'm older, but I'm a 3 stripe white belt who can hang with some blues and defend not too badly for a while with a few purples in my school...my size at that height gives decent explosive strength that works for me okay so far. Unless he rolling with guys way heavier than himself his size should be no disadvantage... only your skill level

I am a bigger guy who is now getting a bit better in skill (still white belt) and when I roll with newer guys, I always tell them to try to control my head and try for a Kimura.
Arm bars are virtually impossible for anyone below a purple belt unless they are bigger and stronger than me. Just doesn't happen much.
Chokes are good if you have skinny arms. I am relatively easy to choke if you can blade well, but if I can grab your arm and it's skinny, you've got a problem.
Leg and ankle stuff is an exercise in futility for a low skill small guy because 50-50 positions are most common and unless you are really fast, I will push you around with my feet while locking down my own ankle lock. I'm slower, but much stronger.
Triangles are possible, but difficult given that I can overpower most small guys even locked in. Top triangles take away a lot of room for me to position out, so if you're in top, that's an option. Also, I will probably need my elbows to posture if I am bottom triangle. This is effective.
Also effective is a head control Kimura attack. Very hard for me to defend and has a secondary scissor choke option.
These are the ways I get tapped out most.
We have one guy who can hit a darce on me. He's tiny and a purple belt, but no beginners can finish a darce on me.
Definitely be patient though. For me, I love to drill with people, especially as a bigger guy who tires out. So maybe wait until the second hour or something and see if the big guys want a low intensity drill roll.
I like it because it is low energy investment and I get to learn details for when I am fighting someone bigger than me.
I have two opponents bugger than me. One is 6 foot 5 and 120kg+. One is 6 foot 9 and 150kg+ and stronger than me in some ways. So it's in my best interest to have good techniques and there's a lot I can learn from other people drilling on me. Win win.!

I am around 235lb right now and just got crushed yesterday by a guy at 315 about 4 inches taller than me. I was able to deal with him fine until he grabbed my feet in open guard and pushed me with my back sliding on the ground all around the room like a bulldozer. I wasn't able to establish position to guard and when I tried to spin, he just turned into it and kept pushing. I kept playing with my feet to try to do something to re establish control, but eventually he managed to pass and got me in side control (we are both beginners). Try as I might, I couldn't get him off me and I spent 5 minutes on my back getting smothered. He did no attacks, just camping out on top. He was active in defending his neck and keeping no space or rolling his neck away. I couldn't get enough space to get my second hand in there to help. I haven't seen a video on how to deal with this, especially in no gi.
All the videos show situations where the top opponent yields enough space to do something to allow a shrimp or a knee shield or head control.
I will try this next Wednesday and ask my instructor, but it was really tough.
After the time was finished, he asked me to try side control on him and he was just as paralyzed, probably more.
I am still at a loss as to how to overcome this.
If he made an attack, I could get out, but if it were a match, I would just be trapped. He would get his 2 points for guard pass and run the clock.

Isolating a single limb or the neck while you're opponent sweats is extremely difficult. I've always found rubber guard to be very effective at locking down slippery people. If your hips have good flexibility, you can even work a gogoplata, omoplata, or kimura from this position. The guy on top very little space to move. Food for thought fellas.

I've just began rolling in my classes I'm 5'11 and barely 170 and im finding it to zap me out of energy and leave me mentally and physically drained. i'd say it can be frustration and just an ego thing of losing I guess which I know in jiu jitsu is gonna happen all the time at first and indefinatly. I get that.
im not even worried about a submission for now unless I get someones back which only happens if I roll with another white belt and if they are stronger then it just doesn't happen a lot.
im not sure if I should just weather the storm or if I should be just looking at these little things on defense. such as mount escapes and toughening up my guard.
I've just noticed I signifigant change in my mindset after getting smashed on. tbh it sucks but when I go back in the gym im hungry to roll again not to win but to see.. ok if I get in a tough spot can I react better. not sure if this is good mindset to acquire but id love feedback from anyone who has been where im at. im told Everyone goes through it. thanks

Big strong guys usually lacks a little of cardio. If you move fast and make your bigger opponent respond to those moves it will be a little easier for you in the long run since he'll gas out before you. Chewy has a clear valid point, you just can't exchange strength with a bigger opponent. Find the holes where you can capitalize on and take on from there. Cheers!
