- 2009-2015 honda pilot rear diff fluid change, quick and simple. Save yourself the money and be sure its done right at the same time. I have read the cost at shops are between $70 and $120. I paid $32 for the fluid and gaskets are super cheap, plus my time. I prefer doing things myself as I trust my work.
recommended changing this fluid is every 15k miles, 7.5k if towing or steep hill driving. I am at 30k oops, haha.
If after refilling the fluid you are going to drive the vehicle and recheck the fluid level, don’t put the new crush washer on until after you recheck the fluid or otherwise you have just ruined a new crush washer. Good video, thanks!
One of the last statements: "repeat the process, to get that last little bit in there", I'm not sure about. I believe you mean to install the fill bolt, drive the vehicle back and forth a few feet, then try to get a bit more fluid in? I've seen that mentioned in other videos. For what it's worth, the Shop Manual makes no mention of this, and spec's 2.64 liter (2.79 US qt) at fluid change, which is about what you can do in one go, I think. Torque value for both bolts is 35 ft/lbs, btw.
I used a slightly different fill set up: ran a long tube to the fill hole, with the other and connected to the tow hitch, and a little funnel pushed in. Then just poured in measured liters from a graduate. A little slow due to the long horizontal length, but fairly easy.
Very helpful, I also have a 2015. Thanks for the tip on topping it off after driving around a little, it did take a few more pumps to fill it all the way after driving it around, and ended up just under 3 quarts.
God bless you for making this video
Bwah ha ha, "It will help with your texting abilities", didn't see that one coming! 😂
Thanks for the video.
I recommend a fluid transfer pump (like a big hand soap pump) for both the rear diff and the center diff. It's a lot easier than trying to squeeze a bottle while holding a tube and then dumping 1/3 of your fluid on the ground (ask me how I know).
I used a gallon pump for my gallon of vtm4 fluid and a quart pump for the quart of hyoid gear oil (honda genuine fluids and both pumps all from amazon)
What year?
@@ormartinez2000 mine is a 2014
Thank you! That was very helpful!
Nice video. Thank you
Everyone needs to realize this is for a four wheel drive pilot, it is not in the description.
Hard to change rear diff fluid when there is no rear diff. Lol
Please what is the gasket for the two drain/fill plugs number. Thank for your video save me money.
Note: "Gasket" in this video = "Crush Washer"
Dealership invoices tend to call it "gasket", but yeah, goofy: "washer" is more to the point.
I have a 2015 Honda Pilot. Some people are using the Honda fluid VTM-4. Some people are using the Honda fluid dual pump II. Which one do we use?
As stated in title. Vtm-4 is for pilot, dual pump would be for crv. And like models
I tried using a 3/8 6" extension to take out the plugs. It doesn't fit. What are you using to take them out?
So transmission flush is different?
Which website do you use to buy Honda fluids? Or did you buy the fluids from the dealership? Thanks
I bought it all on amazon. If you have dealer close that works good too.
Amazon sells the fluids.
I'd vote dealership part department, give those guys some business, lol. They'll also ensure you get the correct fill/drain bolt washers.
I need to do this on my 06 which has front and rear differentials. Will a gallon jug be enough to do both of them or should I buy 2 jugs?
No idea. I change my trans fluid and this rear diff. There is a small front diff but I can’t find any info on changing it’s fluid.
Random Rob I usually do the diffs every 15k both front and rear. My father has an 11 touring. That one I believe just has a rear differential and the front just has the transmission fluid.
@@RandomRobReviews front one is transfer case. 75w85 gear oil required.
@@jayanmanol see page 245 owners manual for "Transfer assembly fluid" GL4 or GL5 SAE 90 or 80w-90. I'm sure a good quality synthetic 75w90 like Mobil 1 would suffice.
How many miles have you driven to.change out your fluid
I went kinda long. First one should be at 15k then every 30k after that.
do you know if the maintenance minder in the pilot will let you know when you should change it or just gotta go by millage ?
Yeah just follow the maintenance minder. FWIW, it seems like it's coming up every 40K kms for me, a bit under 30K miles.
How long in total time did it take to change the fluid?
Bob FromBrisbane
I tend to work slow and focused, about 15-20 minutes.
I did the trans fluid as well but no vid, that takes about 30mins
Are the crush washers 18 or 20mm?
Both. One for each.
Just tell dealership parts department you want the fill and drain bolt washers, while picking up the fluid.
How long did it take you?
f1620mm
Less time then you would take, more then why Turbo would take. Haha
I think it took me just as long fighting with that #*#!* spare as doing the fluid change...
so it needs 1 or 3 quart ?
