Thank you very much, sir! Your awesome video has saved my family time and money. I’d rather spend money on my little ones rather than paying a shop an arm and a leg for something that i could do myself.
Thank you for the video, clear and concise. As a side note here are the torque specs for a 2104 Ridgeline according to the service manual. Rear Differential fill & drain plugs 35ft lbs, Transfer case fill & drain plugs 33ft lbs and the Automatic transmission fill plug 33ft lbs, drain plug 36ft lbs.
No background music I really appreciate you for sharing this thank you so much
Like the calm, quiet, matter of fact presentation.
Wow, I thought it was the same fluid for the front as the rear, thank you, I got the rear thinking it was the same, I'm glad I seen this video, I can now be prepared 🎉
Nice job! Much appreciate you posting this video. I am doing my 2012 Honda Pilot Touring and this was a great pre-task refresher.
Great video thanks for including the torque specs.
Thanks for taking out time to make the video and help others.
This was a really well done video. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for making this video! With your help I was able to do the fluid change and saved a trip to the dealership. Much appreciated!
Thanks for taking the time to record and post this video. Very good instructions and videography.
Very good video!
Note that for the transfer fluid, be SURE to use the correct spec API GL- fluid. There is no such thing as a "GL4 OR GL5" fluid because they are very different and designed for different types of gears, not to mention that ONLY GL4 can be used when brass synchronizers are involved. I found this out the hard way when I used Mobil1 "GL4/GL5" fluid in the manual transmission of my Mazda Miata and it almost destroyed the transmission. The fluid additives attached to my brass synchronizers and peeled away the brass and attached metal, making shifting almost impossible. It required GL4.. The rear diff required GL5. These fluids are NOT interchangeable.
I researched and found the Honda Pilot Transfer case takes HONDA GL5 HYPOID GEAR OIL 75W/85 or 80W/90 depending on the model year.
Thanks for the valuable information on the correct transfer fluid for this application. I have a policy of going to the Honda dealership for fluids. Honda is fussy with fluids!
I know. I've been buying my Honda vehicles (new and used) from my local dealership in my small town. The head technician has been a friend for over 30 years and has never led me astray.
I do use other brand fluids which meet Honda specs in most applications. However, I have never found a replacement for the Dual Pump II diff fluid. @@TheOriginalMechanic
This helps, thank you! I could not find anywhere online the size of the crush washers that need to be replaced...
Good video. Honda is trigger-happy on their recommendations for time/mileage intervals for these two procedures. Also, 9:38 "No way" is incorrect. I use gravity. As a guide, I thread a flex-cable pickup tool, from the top, near the vicinity of the fill hole, then follow that with a tubing. Insert the bottom end of the tubing into the fill hole. Connect the top end of the tubing to a tall funnel with a small opening, to tightly seal the top of the tubing to the funnel.
Thanks for taking the pain in making this video, very helpful.
Man unbelievable! Never again. Thanks
Very much appreciated.
👍👍👍 Awesome, thanks!
thanks a lot! it helped a lot and saved me $$$
The Honda CR-V 2015 2.4 takes the Honda dual pump fluid for the rear diff.
Cool thanks
Looking all over for capacity of txfer case. Thanks for posting
How much was the capacity of the transfer case?
I was told by a Honda mechanic that the CR-V's uses the ATF for lubrication. I asked about my 2009 AWD CR-V.
They should know. I would check my owner's manual as well.
great
Great video! What are the recommended mileage schedules for changing the differential and transfer case fluids?
I didn't look it up. With frequent towing and high temps I would do it at 30k. With average use much less often. I changed it here at 130k. I doubt it had been done before (second owner). Both looked OK. You might want to check your manual of consult a Honda dealer.
@@TheOriginalMechanic I looked in the manual, but I didn't see anything in there about the Differential Fluid/Oil maintenance cycle. I did find a service sheet online that recommended every 50-60k miles, but I'm also finding that it is nearly impossible to find the DPSFII fluid right now (for a 2018 Pilot). I did see it online for $20/quart!!! :-O Even then, someone commented that the seller sent them non-Honda OEM fluid when they ordered! 0_o Our Pilot only has about 51K miles on it, so given that we haven't driven anything other than road miles, no hauling, and Midwest temps, it may have to wait until Spring when supplies return again. Thank again!
Do you need to remove the tire, it looks like there's enough room to get the 3/8 breaker or ratchet in there for the diff?
I think the trouble would come in with the refill. The tire would block placement of the refill bottle and hose. But there may be a creative way to overcome that, as the viewer below found on the transfer case, calling out my "no way" statement about gravity feed.
Very good review, but the question is you can’t use the same Honda differential fluid on the transfer case ??
I covered that at 9:15
Man , I have a 2003 , I can’t find the drain and full plug for the transfer , so I am guessing they don’t have one , I don’t need to change it
Anytime I asked places about the transfer case, they told me "it doesn't have to be changed" I want to change mine also. I think I will. Seems easy enough to do
I agree.
@@TheOriginalMechanic how much was used btw? if you mentioned it, I apologize for missing it. 1 or 2 qts?
I rewatched it, sorry, you did mention it lol I must've been daydreaming at that part of the video 😂 great video. Thank you!
Do you have to change a front diff fluid on the pilot or is that lubricated by the same ATF?
I don't know either lol
"Front differential" is just the automatic transmission/transaxle. So you just need to change the ATF fluid in regular intervals. But that is more specific with needing Honda DW-1 ATF fluid. Don't cheap out on this and get the Honda fluid. The Pilot transmissions can be its only weak point.
Where did you get the bottle adapter with the hose for rear dif?
O'Reilly Auto Parts, stocked by the gear oils.
Wal-Mart
Does the gear oil work for honda element?
Check your owner's manual for specs on fluids.
Or just pump fluid into fill plus using a 90 degree elbow on the end of the tube
Do all pilots have front differential? I can’t find it on mine ?
Yes its hypoid gear oil
what about using one of those pumps that attaches to the quart bottles of gear lube? I have used them in the past with good results.
Sure, a great way to go if you have one.
How do you gauge foot lbs of torque?
I looked it up in manual and used a torque wrench.
Dont buy a cheap torque wrench with the big scale attached to it.
Buy a good one. The kind that has got an adjustable screw at bottom.
The first one is not accurate enough to be accurate.
Anyone know how to do this to the FRONT Diff??? I can't find ANYTHING on it and the 1 I did find is titled wrong.. Video says it's a 1st Gen 2008... what dude has is a 2nd Gen and they are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.. I haven't found ANYTHING on UA-cam, or Google.. I need to know how to put fluid in it and drain the old...
I haven't done it yet but I'm looking into it.
@@TheOriginalMechanic Yeah I'm having a HELL IF A TIME trying to figure out how to do this. And I can't find like ANY info on how to do it either... Im completely stumped! Thanks for taking the time to read and reply to my comment!!
There is no front diff just transfer case transmission and rear diff.
Ok but how do you change the transfer case oil
This looks very similar to a 2017, if not the same
How much fluid to change transfer case friend?
Can't remember off-hand, but I think I put that in the video.
use hand fluid pump
You just wave any one 150 dollar dealer want to change this
Average guy has to go to a mechanic. You need proper tools.
Always an option of course. I don't recall buying anything more than the filling aid from O'Reilly
