I come back to this video about once a year to rewatch it in full. There are *so many* awesome tidbits of creative advice, and interesting perspectives. Glad VF has kept it online, in full, for so long.
I really think you either love or hate the way Jony talks. But that's the same with his designs and what makes him so attractive. At the beginning I found listening to him really tedious but as it went on I was fascinated by how passionate and honest he is. Truly one of a kind, never known anyone like him.
Jony obviously is still feeling a sense of loss. As do many of us who still miss "and one more thing." So very pleased that he is now the CDO. I hope to see a bit of Steve in all his tools for us. His and Tim's are the only stories that have credibility in my eyes.
Jony Ive: “The majority of our manufactured environment is characterized by carelessness. Everything that has been made has a biography to it, there is a story to it. It exists at the end of a whole bunch of decisions and most of those decisions were driven by price and schedule. We have genuinely tried to make products that do not stand testament to that sort of development process or to those values. Rather, they stand testament to us desperately trying to make the very best products we can because we know someone like JJ is going to sit down and stare at this screen and he will sense, he will not be able to articulate it, but we hope he will be able to sense the care that went into it and I do believe that we are capable of discerning of far more than we are able to articulate.”
+JoefromNJ1 So did Albert Einstein, so did Steve Jobs. The idea is to not waste time and thought on what one wears so more time may be spent on important things.
when i first saw Star Trek. i was like "imagine if they hired this guy to do Starwars". and finally it's happening, i can't believe the best director is directing the best SciFi film ever made!!!
+Jahit Janberk (SpartanJ) CEOs do a fundamentally different job than designers. If you listened to the interview, you'd hear that Jony has no interest in administrative work which is exactly what CEOs do.
+roloug95 how is he being artsy when criticizing JJ. He is just a Spielberg rip-off, sorry im being artsy here. Look at super 8, he tried to homage Spielberg but failed at it, it has no heart. He's only a spielberg lite
I can't think of a better team for the job of manning the next Star Wars than J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot. They've been knocking it out the park since Cloverfield. Super 8, Star Trek, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol? Enough said. I just hope Michael Giacchino is handling the score.
I just gained a ton more respect for JJ after listening to this. Great closing statement. No pressure JJ, but do your best work you've ever done on Star Wars please. hehe ;) Also love the info on the creative process from Jony. Home run on this talk. :)
Yes, Jony is a very quiet, calm, gentle person. But someone as fanatical about design as he is will be really annoyed about that small white dot on the thick black bit of the 'V' just to the left of his head on the set behind him when he watches this. "Why didn't they paint over that white dot? Didn't they even CARE??"
Two creative geniuses in one sitting. Pardon me, three. 19:25 "We are capable of discerning far more than we are capable of articulating." I think that is what separates Apple from the rest. 24:42 J.J. explains why those that copy Ive's work fail.
I'm not part of a suicide squad. LOL. I'm not following you with a chainsaw...I'm the girl next door. I'm your boss. I'm your doctor. I'm a POSSIBLE VILLAIN YOU MAY SEE IN THE STAR WARS SERIES. Kids must be able to recognize these...villains...they must must must!!
Both of these very regular seeming dudes clearly know what makes the creative process truly tick - here's hoping in JJ Abrams case that translates to one amazing Star Wars movie.
If you don't do it...I'm going to do it. I'm going to go into Hollywood. Try and stop me. I'm not going to leave my counsellors and psychologists doing overtime. Uh. Forget it.
+PauLtus B Ask Disney. J.J. has gone on record saying he does not like 3D, but it does increase B.O. revenue since the 3D ticket is more expensive than traditional 70MM. My guess is they are really trying to take Avatar off the throne as highest grossing film of all time, which Star Wars and Batman v Superman have the potential to do.
jed52 I think it's absolute bullshit. I've seen tons of people who have a problem with 3D and for none of them the problem is price. Turn up the cost for 2D movies. I don't care. I don't think that since Avatar people are actually going to watch movies because they're in 3D, with very few exceptions for movies that were made for it. It's ridiculous. I've been skipping movies because of 3D. The only defence I've heard of it is: "why are you complaining so much I can't even see the difference". The range of opinions just seems to go to hate to indifference so. It's really stupid. What is the point of going to the cinema if it has become the worse way to watch a movie.
geeez, that Ive is one step from becoming a messiah, the way he describes every simple thing, trying to make it feel "unearthly" makes me really uncomfortable, you fucking make computers and phones, trying to sell the same product over and over again every two years, "my love is the product"... your love is to make the profit no matter what. Vanity fair, exactly.
Why are you creating such strong feelings of anxiety. Why are Jesus just dying by the light saber? What about dying inside? FORGET ROMANCE. FORGET SIMPLE ROMANCE. Please. What about friendships. And all other ships. Someone talk about how important it is to build solid ships.
The Force Awakens was SO BAD... Look at the fall-off in sales for Last Jedi due to Star Wars fans boycotting after being misled by Kennedy and Abrams. After 2 flops for FANS, it's time to restore faith in "the force" with new leadership for the 9th episode. As Mel rooks said... if you don't LOVE your characters, you can do NO GOOD for your movie - you must step down. Now is he time to bring in Brian Grazer as producer and Ron Howard as director - please save Star Wars IX.
Stop creating polar opposite...perfect...unreal characters in the Star Wars series. It's strange. Inspiring but just like the bible. Creates anxiety because you cannot reach this summit of perfection
Jony Ive is such a deep, relaxing person.
He is very passionate about what he does.
I come back to this video about once a year to rewatch it in full. There are *so many* awesome tidbits of creative advice, and interesting perspectives. Glad VF has kept it online, in full, for so long.
glad I'm not the only one
Both, Jony and J.J are not just artists and great at what they do, but they're both highly intelligent.
Jony is not an artist he's a designer.
If UA-cam Commenting were an Olympic Sport nah, not a rule
What?
Idk
Alright :|
This talk gives new meaning to "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen."
I really think you either love or hate the way Jony talks. But that's the same with his designs and what makes him so attractive. At the beginning I found listening to him really tedious but as it went on I was fascinated by how passionate and honest he is. Truly one of a kind, never known anyone like him.
Jony Ive should narrate stories. His voice is soothing.
Chris Briscoe He could do relaxation apps.
I would definitely listen to him.
Powerful stuff. Thank you to everyone who made this possible!
The interviewer seemed much more interested in JJ than Jony. Tsk tsk.
This talk was outstanding. More!
+Will Napier Actually, they were in, sitting ;) :p
+unlokia Badum tss
when jony ives talk, times stops
This is singularly the best conversation about creativity that I’ve heard in years. Period.
Creative Philosophy by JJ Abrams and Brian Grazer. This was awesome.
isn't the interviewer the guy who welcomes Obiwan in Utapau??????
+Pau “Express Filmmaker” Perramon No - that character, Tion Medon, is played by Bruce Spence.
+Pau “Express Filmmaker” Perramon Brian Grazer
hahahah
+Connor Rentz u mean wizard of the first order zedicus zul zorander who crossed realms to help out the jedi.
Bro😂😂😂😂 looks just like him
Jony obviously is still feeling a sense of loss. As do many of us who still miss "and one more thing." So very pleased that he is now the CDO. I hope to see a bit of Steve in all his tools for us. His and Tim's are the only stories that have credibility in my eyes.
Jony Ive's body language is way too charismatic for his voice
+Samuel Concepcion i know! been thinking the same
Jony Ive: “The majority of our manufactured environment is characterized by carelessness. Everything that has been made has a biography to it, there is a story to it. It exists at the end of a whole bunch of decisions and most of those decisions were driven by price and schedule. JJ only owns one shirt.
+JoefromNJ1 same as George Lucas,...maybe an inspirational way of life for a good ep7?
+JoefromNJ1
So did Albert Einstein, so did Steve Jobs. The idea is to not waste time and thought on what one wears so more time may be spent on important things.
It's not ideas. It's natural mannerisms and quarks. Fun fact, Albert attended a wedding with bare feet!
+TeddyLeper And Mark Zuckerberg
+JoefromNJ1 It's a great shirt
the "alu-minium" part killed me
when i first saw Star Trek. i was like "imagine if they hired this guy to do Starwars". and finally it's happening, i can't believe the best director is directing the best SciFi film ever made!!!
+abcmaya Now if he can only do Transformers too...
+abcmaya Transformers needs Michael Bay and only Michael Bay.
Man Jony should of been the CEO of Apple, such a humble designer
+Jahit Janberk (SpartanJ) CEOs do a fundamentally different job than designers. If you listened to the interview, you'd hear that Jony has no interest in administrative work which is exactly what CEOs do.
Is it just me or JJ looks and sounds a lot like young Spielberg here?
Exactly what I was thinking.
+Simon Douville Aside from the fact that they are both Jewish, I see no visual similarities.
+ayush mishra JJ is the next Spielberg
Belly Flop
JJ has done nothing but blockbusters and popular television so far so your artsy poser slander is baseless
+roloug95 how is he being artsy when criticizing JJ. He is just a Spielberg rip-off, sorry im being artsy here. Look at super 8, he tried to homage Spielberg but failed at it, it has no heart. He's only a spielberg lite
Amazing discussion ..! Thanks, guys
Damn, amazing talk
Good to know that emotion is gonna be the core of this new movie
I can't think of a better team for the job of manning the next Star Wars than J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot. They've been knocking it out the park since Cloverfield. Super 8, Star Trek, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol? Enough said. I just hope Michael Giacchino is handling the score.
Excellent for one who claimed not to be an expert at interviewing!
ok, I'm feeling the HYPE! Dec. 18 can't come any sooner
Great stuff!
Glad I got to see this.
one of the best videos i have seen on youtube.
Inspirational.
Design at best, is simple and beautiful, or … simply beautiful. For that reason I applaud Jony Ive for inspiring me, thank you.
great conversation!
I just gained a ton more respect for JJ after listening to this. Great closing statement. No pressure JJ, but do your best work you've ever done on Star Wars please. hehe ;) Also love the info on the creative process from Jony. Home run on this talk. :)
Don't matter it is a bunch of gibberish sentences, Jony Ive's way of talking makes it so intense that i'm gonna cry
Yes, Jony is a very quiet, calm, gentle person. But someone as fanatical about design as he is will be really annoyed about that small white dot on the thick black bit of the 'V' just to the left of his head on the set behind him when he watches this. I think that is what separates Apple from the rest.
24:42 J.J. explains why those that copy Ive's work fail.
What's James Gunn doing here?
Brian looks like a troll doll
I guess J.J was as interested in Johny's explanation of Job's simplicity as I did.
Brian Grazer looks like Roman Atwood who became a mad scientist and got electrocuted and his hair went all crazy.
It's amazing that JJ makes all those cool movies and has time to run the Ferrerai Formula 1 team
Hey, J.J. Love the Doc Martens!
'Every platform'? JJ's only game venture was that interactive Super 8 trailer!
It's the only series that can create global change...
No one's complaining Brian Grazer's outfit?
I mean that socks and Superstar doesn't go that well.
What the fuck is Jony Ive saying?
+HiMyNameIsDannny ahahaha just listen
it gets after he responds to JJ
+HiMyNameIsDannny u should point out what specifically u didn't understand so someone can help u.
I know what you are saying. He did not give a real answer to anything. He just goes into things that have nothing to do with the question
+TheLsufan622000 If you don't understand it you probably never will.
Let's be real. Not go stupid.
And yet haters will find some way to rant at Disney for something.
Yep
+Commander Shepard
Where the fuck is Mickey? Is he taking the part of Jar Jar...etc.
Close enough?
affalaffaa yep
+Commander Shepard He must be donating all that money... what a guy
+Commander Shepard They're doing good things with Marvel, Pxar, and The Muppets... must buy some Disney shares. :)
Both of these very regular seeming dudes clearly know what makes the creative process truly tick - here's hoping in JJ Abrams case that translates to one amazing Star Wars movie.
Ive, have you used a Mac lately? Don't you notice the OSX low quality? The glitches Mac never had? Really?
-Is JJ wearing an iWatch?
Daniel Hong Yes he’s wearing an Apple Watch.
Jony Ive does not deserve to be knighted.
+Main_Man How about we leave that decision up to Queen Elizabeth?
Skipped the JJ Abrams parts.. Jony is clearly the star of the show here !
56:16 God Bless you JJ Abram!!!
Am I the only one who watched this thinking "I couldn't give a shit less about Steve Jobs, give me more JJ talking Star Wars!"?
no you are not alone
Conversations.
If you don't do it...I'm going to do it. I'm going to go into Hollywood. Try and stop me. I'm not going to leave my counsellors and psychologists doing overtime. Uh. Forget it.
The guy in the middle looks like Mattia Binotto
JJ has a 5head
Now, Mr Abrams.
Why can't I watch your movie anywhere on 70MM? Not even digital IMAX without going through 3D?
+PauLtus B Ask Disney. J.J. has gone on record saying he does not like 3D, but it does increase B.O. revenue since the 3D ticket is more expensive than traditional 70MM. My guess is they are really trying to take Avatar off the throne as highest grossing film of all time, which Star Wars and Batman v Superman have the potential to do.

Movement. Location...why? Why are you here?
Jony sounds a lot like Sean Bean. Close your eyes and listen. It's true.
49:07
JJ Abrams? or Alice from the Brady bunch?
I must have hit pretty close to the mark to get her all riled up like that, huh, kid?
15:15min : powerbook feels like
Have a seat in that terrifying Divergent simulation chair. Come into the hunger games arena. I am the gamekeeper. I confuse you sh*tless
5:54 "How do we get that feeling back of people that we love, that make us laugh and make us feel, in a world that is Jar Jar Bing"
I thought after a minute and a half they were all gonna make out
Jon Ive: master of pontification.
if only JarJar Abrams hadnt directed Star Wars!
Unfortunately cannot be undone.
Do you guys at Vanity Fair specialize in incredibly boring interviews?
Now, JJ can write using an apple pencil.
They both live in other worlds....lol. The left one talks like jesus
48:12 so this is referring to the iPhone X :P
10:26 that is lost now, and company is bigger, so its little bad i think !
Wait, Steve Jobs died 4 years ago?
+Plasticcaz wait, wasn't he in a movie a few years ago? and a in new movie coming in 2016?
i love jews
+steve rogers i love your mama
+TWT what?!!!
reeeally now?
Can you live with yourself? How can you love and hate me at the same time? You want to be me and yet you want to exterminate me.
How are you going to survive now?
Jony Ive is so innovating!! He included a compass on the iPhone 3GS and... umm...
jony is heisenberg
lel I skipped all the apple shit.
Did Jony have a health issue? He's changed a hell of a lot (and I don't mean just weight)
geeez, that Ive is one step from becoming a messiah, the way he describes every simple thing, trying to make it feel "unearthly" makes me really uncomfortable, you fucking make computers and phones, trying to sell the same product over and over again every two years, "my love is the product"... your love is to make the profit no matter what. $4 billion budget?
+Martin Zitter
no thats how much lucas arts was bought by disney
oh
+Martin Zitter They'll make it back on the first movie alone from box office, video sales, and merchandise.
They made their budget of the movie back from merchandises and Adverts already.
Jonny Ives did not design the Mac!
Terry Oyama and Jerry Manock designed the original Macintosh case under guidance of Steve Jobs.
15:27 best moment Ive thinking that's way steev reminds me 10x (you can do better)
Let's do it. I'm going to manipulate every movie you love. Sorry. Class time.

I want to see the light saber represent hi tech hi Intel hi power...but it rarely being used. Hm. How will you fill those hours now.
An Apple watch is useless
Lol
Is jony ive basically saying steve jobs was a loveable Jackass workaholic.
You blew it Jar Jar Abrams.
everytime JJ sais jawdropping, I fear he's gonna say Jar Jar dropping...
Those Adidas though.... size 12" US? I GOT A PAIR :)
________? ___DOC_MARTIN'S___ ___ADIDAS___!
Stop creating polar opposite...perfect...unreal characters in the Star Wars series. It's strange. Inspiring but just like the bible. Creates anxiety because you cannot reach this summit of perfection
Children...who will you choose to be? Luke sky walker is so boring. Flat. Unreal.
