    If you are looking to take better headshots and make more money in the headshot photography market, this tutorial is for you. Peter Hurley is arguably the best headshot photographer in the world and has spent the last 20 years taking photos of thousands of people.
    In this tutorial you will learn not only how to reproduce Peter's signature lighting setup but you will also learn the most important skill any photographer can have: directing people in front of your camera. Peter has dozens of tips to help make average, every day people look their absolute best simply by precisely positioning their face and body and eliciting a real human emotion. Making people feel comfortable and confident in front of your camera is one of the hardest skill sets to have, and Peter has perfecting this technique.
    If you are shooting professionally or are just a part time photographer, this tutorial will teach you how to make the best possible headshots of anyone regardless if you are shooting outside with natural light or are inside a small studio with strobes or constant lights.

    That final line "who's going to take them? YOU!" is so important for anyone in any profession. The more you believe in that, the stronger you will be. For instance, I teach ballroom dance, people want to learn how to dance, whose going to teach them? Me! If we all said this to ourselves, we would all be more successful.

      Even if you agree with this, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. The business of photography is still a business, and sales is a necessary part of it. You can't be a successful full time photographer if you can't monetize your photography

      I'm curious, how did you come to this conclusion? This kind of putdown is so common, you have to wonder where it's coming from. Jealousy? Narrow-mindedness? If it's from Expertise, then let's hear it. Let's hear the objective criticism or else it'd be safe to dismiss your statement as a "typical UA-cam comment. Empty and therefore useless."

      He is a pretty amazing photographer and student of people and light. If that constitutes 10% of just his skill set, then it simply makes him an even better salesperson. 9x better? Not really, IMHO, but definitely an excellent presenter, thinker and businessman.

      Diesel is right. Hurley has said something similar to this in a previous video. Most of the time it's about the psychology. He spends more time interacting with the client than actually pressing down on the shutter. That is why Hurley is so damn good at what he does.

    • @FStoppers
      @FStoppers  7 років тому +31

      To be fair, Peter's clients have changed from your average Joe to the top CEOs, entrepreneurs, tv personalities, actors, corporation employees, etc. Yes $3000 a headshot is insane for most markets but Peter has been able to work his way up to the very top in the top most market. A few years ago he used to be $1100 a session and many of his associates in other parts of the world shoot at $300 - $700 a sesson. He talks about this in the marketing section. I bet Vancouver is a pretty good photography market.

      Well you could take thousands and never figure out that there are these things on the face: eyes, eyebrows, mouth...all of which can move and make various expressions. Look at the portfolios out there. Most of them, the people all have the same deadpan look, no variation in affect whatsoever. He's pointing out things in a few minutes that some photogs figure out in years, or never figure out at all. Dunning-Kruger effect is rampant in photography.

    The most money Hurley is making is giving these classes. He might have a few $3000 clients that he worked his way up, but in todays market, you can start at $125, because the market will dictate it, and the masses pay for "good enough". I can almost guarantee you will not take headshots for $3K. But I can also guarantee that you will take many $200 or less. And , I dont really know what headshot a client would need at 3K!

    • @FStoppers
      @FStoppers  2 роки тому

      The distortion is a good feature though. Peter's images used to be even more distorted back in his Hasselblad days but if you look at a photo taken at 100mm vs 200mm (which requires stepping back), the 200mm sometimes looks a bit unnatural and flat. 50mm might be too warped but around 85-130mm, something interesting happens. -P

    Sorry to be "that guy", but the promo image for perfecting headshots, has lighting reflections an glare in Peter's glasses. Again, but being a jerk, but either raising the height of the light, or tilting the subjects head down, or even slightly tilting his glasses down would eliminate that.

    • @eccentricsmithy2746
      @eccentricsmithy2746 6 років тому

      never tilt head down with someone with glasses. that is photography 101, tilting down will bring their eyes closer to the top rim of the glasses, making them look like they have small beady eyes. Always angle the camera to the left or right of the glasses to remove glare....move the camera, not the subject.

      I've watched his CL program and ours is way more thorough. I love CL and the fact that you can watch it for free when it airs, but my goodness is there a lot of dead time when instructors are setting up and answering questions and contests, etc. It's good content no doubt but we try to edit everything as tight as possible so there aren't dead spots. To each their own though.

    If I was an Abercrombie model for 12 years then randomly started a photo business with the connects I have, shit I'd charge 20K for a single headshot lol. Just buy 3-4 constant lighting lights and 1-2 strobes for fill light and set them up in a way that accompaniment the talent's face and learn how to talk to people (just bullshit as much as you can) and learn basic facial expressions and pay attention to their hair and what in general makes the individual people look good when shooting and avoid awkward bullshit poses - that's all, no need to look up to dudes that just got lucky based on connections “attention to detail" isn't that what all photography is about? If anyone has photo questions feel free to ask me I won't charge you money for it at all and if you are in need of headshots in Los Angeles area I charge 300 per sesh (retouched and everything) ;-)

      "Watch when you hold your sub" It's a phrase he uses to make your arms look thinner when shooting a headshot. -P
