The (Unofficial) Octapad UPGRADE is now available.
This is a downloadable expansion for your Octapad containing 99 new kits and 30 phrase loops.
    Get it here:
    payhip.com/b/lvDWk
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Octapad is a great piece of percussion technology.
However, what you get in the standard, default kits is honestly a bit meh.
To unleash the Octapad's true potential you need to be willing to customize and create your own sounds and kits.
This video offers a few ways you can approach the Octapad to get the most out of it.
See my other videos for more Octapad demonstrations and performance examples, and if you want more tips, more custom kit examples or anything else, let me know in the comments.
If you're reading this, I hope you have a great day and happy drumming :)

Hey guys, I have a question for you all:
    - if you own an Octapad, do you want access to my Octapad settings along with all my custom kits, or would you rather make your own?
If you want to hear more of my Octapad btw, you can find some videos on my Instagram @limitlessdrums.alex

hey Jack, glad you're loving your Octapad
I'm actually seeking someone who can help me test kit sharing.
You would need a computer and a USB stick, and in return I can offer a few of my custom made kits -- and the outcome will help me determine whether I can make a package to share all 99 of my custom kits with the world!

I bought my Octapad at roughly the same time as you made this video and it has been pushed to one side and forgotten a lot of the time. After a burst of enthusiasm during lockdown when I experimented with it I realised that my all too basic, untrained drumming ability limited me in exploring its potential. Your video has helped me to see that the Octapad is perfect for helping me train myself to actually PLAY. I have a KT10 pedal an additional Roland snare pad and I think your use of a pedal for side stick sounds is making me think more about using two feet. Thank you.

I love the Octapad as a test of precision playing, as it is quite unforgiving in nature. If you play bad, it sounds bad! But if you play well, it is immensely rewarding.
Best of luck with your playing!

    Hi,
I wanted to say this was a very useful video and loved how clearly you explained everything. I recently acquired an SPD-30 and the manufacture drum kits are not the best. You said in your video that you've created your own custom kits. Would you mind sharing your Octapad settings along with your custom kits? Also in the video, I noticed that you had a MAPEX controller peddle. Is that a hi-hat controller peddle? I don't want to break the bank for a hi-hat peddle from Roland. Do you have any alternative suggestions? Thank you so much in advance.

      Hi David,
I hope to share my settings and kits soon!
The Mapex pedal is actually for my TD-9 electric kit, and is an acoustic hihat pedal.
I use the FD-9 pedal - demonstrated in one of my videos - but you could try the Yamaha HH65 or the FD-8 maybe!

It seems to me that you can also midi in a module like the Pearl Mimic Pro or something similar that has superb kit samples, turning the Octapad into a small but great sounding unit. I definitely think the stock sounds are pretty lame, especially the snares. I have an old TD8 module that has many of the same samples. Again crappy snares but otherwise many usable sounds. Maybe an edrum module midi in video for these pads would be interesting. Thanks for the video!

    • @limitlessdrums2680

    • @limitlessdrums2680
      @limitlessdrums2680  3 роки тому

Hey there, so I've used my Octapad for rehearsal, for street busking and for gigs, and if you want something suitable for all 3 then you need to go quite powerful
The thing with edrums is that they use the full frequency range, like keyboards. You need an.amp that can handle deep bass and also sparkling treble.
Keyboard amps or edrum specific amps are the way to go.
My go-to is the Roland PM-30 but they don't make them anymore. Those kind of specs are what I'd be looking for. 100 Watt, 12" subwoofer and tweeter.
EQ knobs are a bonus, as well as a bass boost for bigger venues/audiences.
What you definitely DON'T want to do is go for something underpowered, even if it's just for your own practice.
The beauty of the Octapad is it's rich sound and you'll lose a lot of the impact by losing punch at the bottom end, not to mention that it has to be able to compete with the acoustic kit.
      Hope that helps!

how to compare this to what is out there today in mid-2023? and what do you think go the Nord Drum 3P in comparison to this? What happened on the market since you first reviewed this?

    • @limitlessdrums2680
      @limitlessdrums2680  9 місяців тому +1

hey, I wish I had played a Nord Drum 3P but I don't have experience with that one yet!
I think the main difference between the Octapad and similar devices is that here you only get the classic Roland sounds to play with. Since the Octapad first found success, there are many similar products that either work as samplers or have their own built in sounds (like Nord), so it really depends on how you like the Roland sounds.
Also Roland build quality is known to be the best in the electronic drum market, and I can attest to that! I've played my Octapad for thousands of hours at this point and it still performs perfectly.
Hope that answers your question :)

    • @framestomind7548
      @framestomind7548 9 місяців тому

thanks, just found a store that had all of them.. hmm, they were all really cool to play on I have to say... the pads however are really different.. the octapad is the softest with less rebound, the Nord drum is the slimmest with a snappy rebound of your stick, and the Roland Pro, tjeh new one got the best feel closer to a drum, but stil more rubber softy compared to the V drums.. but V drums only har full kits and I did not find that they have made a mesh Drum Machine... that would definitely be the best choice as the mesh of the V drums are amazing for real feel and re-bounce really on a different level than all of the bad drums... I really cannot say what to choose, the Nord Drum only got 6 pads and if one ad a kick pedal it takes away one pad, not a smart move by Clavia brand to do so... Hope there comes more ones this year... thanks for getting back!@@limitlessdrums2680

Kan you make kits/custompresets/banks with midi notes to each pad?
Like for example if I have a vst on my computer that uses notes c1 to g1 can I then program it to the pads, and make a second kit where I program c2 to g2 to the pads and instantly switch between the banks with the different midi notes?
This comes in handy if you for example have a vst plugin where you have midi notes from c1 to g1 and program that to the pads and then another different vst that has c2 to g2 as notes and program those to the pads, and then if you have another vst that uses notes c3 to g3 and program that to another bank and instantly switch between them if you need to switch between the vsts without reprogramming the midi notes.

Do you have version 2 of the Octapad?
      If so...
"Version 2 in the SPD-30 added a feature called Output Gain, which boosts the output level coming from the outputs +6dB. Selecting this setting can be helpful if your particular setup requires a stronger output signal from the SPD-30. Here's how to access the Output Gain feature:
      1. Press the MENU button.
      2. Turn the function 1 (F1) knob to highlight "AMBIENCE."
      3. Press the function 3 (F3) button (ENTER).

      5. Turn F3 to choose "+6dB."
      6. Press the BACK button when you're finished. The new settings are saved automatically."
      Also, impedence is a factor.
"The Heaphone Output is Low Impedence (47 Ohms) and to drive the Headphones, so the volume is good
The Output (L&R) is High Impedence (1 k ohm) and is expected to be connected to a Pre-Amp and Amp, so this would account for the difference you experience.
You can use the +6dB Gain setting to increase the volume."

Hey, no the Octapad is not a sampler.
It's more like the drum equivalent to a synth.
There are hundreds of sounds, and they can all be modified - but you can't add anything new.
Of course it can be used as a MIDI instrument to trigger other software -- but generally if you buy the Octapad it's because you like the Roland sound.
I believe my Upgrade pack gets the full potential out of it, but it's all done by editing the sounds that are already there.
      Hope that helps.

do you know what the storage capacity of the octopad spd30 is ?

I checked the Owners Manual and it doesn't say.
But based on the fact you can't upload or add samples to it, I think the on-board storage is irrelevant.
If you want to create endless user kits you need to use a USB stick, as the Octapad will only store 99 at a time

What foot pedal triggers are you using?

I use KT-10 kick drum pedals and the FD-9 hi-hat pedal. Highly recommend both!

Can you download some sounds and put it in spd30?

Hey, you can only use the Roland sounds already on the device, but you can edit them into a ton of variations.
The Octapad isn't a sampler - you can get this feature on rival products!

Is it possible to use the Octapad as a guitar looper (for live guitar riffs) like the Alesis Strike Multipad shown in this video (without any foot pedal)? ua-cam.com/video/0_xyK00UuxQ/v-deo.html

Hi, no unfortunately atelier the Octapad does not sample. It's a self-contained instrument that can also be used as a MIDI trigger

Actually, yes. I believe it can be used to midi-control or at least loop, up to three live instruments. 😊

But Limitless is correct that it does not sample so far as I can figure out. I think that’s one of the biggest reasons it’s not much more popular.

Hmm I'll have to check my settings next time I play.
Honestly it's not the best surface for press rolls and such but it's definitely possible for double strokes, fast singles, Moeller triplets etc
