Nathan Haas: How "Gravel" is the UCI Gravel World Champs?

- At the end of 2021, Nathan Haas left the World Tour and pro-road cycling behind. After a decade of racing around the globe at the most prominent road events on the calendar, Haas decided to swap the pressure cooker of pro-life for the "gravel vibes". So Haas became a lone gunman, a privateer in the gravel world.
This year Nathan has not just raced many of the major gravel races on a quickly expanding calendar but has come to the gravel world with a unique plan. For those who have even slightly gazed in the gravel direction, they'd be hard not to have come across the collaborative work Haas has done with his sponsors, Colnago and Castelli, this year. As a result, he's raced five distinct bikes and kits throughout the season, a project that couldn't have happened in his previous life as a World Tour Pro. It's been a colourful story to follow.
I managed to get a look at the bike he'd use for Gravel Worlds 2022. And while hanging around, I decided to use the opportunity to pick the Girona-based Australian's brains on his thoughts around the UCI-sanctioned race.

Met Nathan a few times in Girona, super sound dude. That is a seriously nice looking bike. But Shoddy buddy you just bust my eyes with that focusing 😵💫
Yeah, the camera was playing up. I had to use a 20mm lens as my trursty12-60 decided to break moments before filming.
Nathan is such a cool guy, I could listen to him talk bikes all day, he has a natural ability to be in front the camera! What you did with Sagan recently is a typical Peter Sagan interview, "car crash" Every time i start to watch a Sagan interview I know what I'm going to get, incoherent nonsense, and it's not a language problem!

good interview! I like the idea of gravel and everything, but I don't like when the industry pushes you to buy certain things that you don't necessarily need. The gravel championships proved something, and that is you don't need to buy "gravel specific groupset" or a gravel frame, IF YOU WANT A LIGHT GRAVEL BUILD. Most frames have enough tire clearance to accommodate 35's which is a decent size for light gravel and you can go by with a road Medium cage or long cage derailleur with a 34 or bigger cassette. Maybe if you want to go even more gravel'ish a 650b wheelset would give that frame more clearance for bigger tires. It all depends, but what i want to see is flexibility in between this two bike disciplines, at the end its just a bike with two wheels right?
I think a lot of normal riders have overcompensated with gravel bikes. I like how the popularity of gravel made a lot of people think about the fact that they don't need an uncomfortable racing bike to go out for some long rides and that taking some unpaved roads is great.
But now I see tons of gravel bikes with big tires that spend most of their time on pavement or very smooth gravel - not even close to using the full offroad capability of them. An endurance roadbike with 32mm tires is plenty capable for what most people actually demand of them.
To have a road bike that accommodates 35mm tires i would have had to spend a fair few thousand on a new road bike where as I only spent $700AUD on a 2016 Focus Mares for my gravel bike....might have spent a little bit more on some upgrades in the past few weeks :D
@@craigblowfield8821 yeah and thats good! But for those who already have a road bike or two with plenty of clearance like me, and want to join a local gravel group for the occasional light ride then they are not doomed. One example is the Trek Domane and the 2021 Emonda, two frames with plenty of clearance, same carbon as the Checkpoint (gravel frame) i have the Emonda and can fit 35’s in it, i need a 1x crankset though, some protection tape and thats it. My LBS will order some 650b wheels for another customer so i am going to check with them to see if i can fit 40+ in my Emonda 🤔
@@alannkevin not that I have a lot of gravel experience at this point but for gravel I wouldn't really consider 35mm as being 'plenty of clearance'. I'd see the maximum of your frameset clearance as being more of a starting point for gravel.

problem is, if you mix gravel riders and pro roadies, the gravel riders are going to tend get the shit kicked out of 'em, anytime, anyplace.

Mattia de Marchi raced the course in the M19-34 age group. He was 24th in that age group, and was over 15 minutes slower than anyone in Italy's elite team. 40 minutes slower than Vermeersch. He's an accomplished gravel rider, but based on the results I don't think team Italy was wrong to leave him out from their elite team.

This is why American gravel races turned away UCI because they are determined to do a smash and grab and ruin the sport and they already have with the first UCI gravel race. Stick to the road. Gravel is its own.

once you can put 38c tires on a race bike, like a canyon ultimate or giant tcr, why bother gettin a gravel bike. why have a 20lb bike when you can ride one thats 15lbs. gravel bikes r done son
Rocky downhill on 38's might as well buy an e-wheelchair
38c might be too narrow for rugged gravel. There isn't much speed penalty for wider tires. Bottom line tires all depends on the route and sometimes a 45 may be best. Plus the short wheelbase on road bikes make them less stable on loose surfaces. Also the gravel bike is a more relaxed geometry, so for long endurance events unless you have great flexibility like a pro it isn't gonna be comfortable or even fast to be in a position that becomes painful halfway through.
@@daryl4841 Yep I spend 45's on slate rock terrain and it's a good balance with road & rain. Disagree on geo, tire width feels ok but diameter ends being enormous which forces long geometry so all adult frame sizes use the same 700 wheel size so my small frame has the same wheel as a 2 meter body complexion frame, for me it's evident which body to geo ratio feels more confortable and maneuverable.
