Dedicated to Herbert George Wells - a man before his time.
I'm really appreciative of the comments and critiques and the sheer amount of likes and new subscribers. Thank you! I didn't expect this.
This video was really just a practice for editing, to make my modelling and motion design look better and more believable (even if not photorealistic, which is not something I aim for with this).
I'm loving the comments. Your knowledge and love for WOTW and sci-fi in general makes me so happy. Thanks for pointing out any discrepancies or giving me critique - I do welcome it and I don't take it personally.
That said, it's only natural that a few rude people have popped up. Sadly, I had to block one person. I don't like doing this, because I'm not into silencing people or their opinions. But I don't tolerate rudeness to myself or other people and I don't want this to turn into something I have to moderate.
I've tried to answer any questions and/or comments with specific responses, so please have a read through and see if I've answered your question before. Especially about the Australian Rock Parrot!
Have a great week, everyone and please try to keep it civil.

This needs to be made into full feature and set in the right time period, not one of these modern remakes.
Agreed! They neaaaarly got it with the recent BBC series... and then it fell apart. :(
@@danafoxconcepts it’s a love story with war of the worlds on top of it so people will watch it
Yes I agree 💯💯💯💯
If it was set in the proper time period, (or at least book accurate), there are no shields on the Martian machines. They overwhelmed the humans because of their speed-a speed (as fast as a locomotive) which 19th century artillery could not track (the humans downed a few Martians simply by chance as a firing line of cannon managed to hit a few)
The BBC drama series was a complete pile of poo!
I like the depiction of the heat ray - so many things show it as a visible beam, while the books describe it as a flash, and its targets erupting into flame
Thanks, Technobabylon (what a cool name)! Yes, wasn't it just terrifying - the idea of a simple flash of energy and heat...? :O Many thanks for you lovely comment.
HG Wells had no concept of a laser. He did have the concept of a magnifying glass or a mirror to burn paper or insects.
@@thudthud5423 heat ray
@@danafoxconceptsWar of the World was a perfect allegory on British Imperialism, the lessening importance religion in England 🏴 at the time, and invasive species.
@@markmunroe-hz8rf Also the invasion was a desperate move. Mars was dying, the martians had to invade the earth or die off. In the end of the book they tried to attack Venus but no fuirther cyinder sightings were made. It was presumed they couldnt launch anymore and eventually died off.
I always wondered about a sequel, What if man had learned from the Martians and decided to return the favor by virus bombing Mars. Then the Human invasion and take over would begin. Then it would truly be a war of the worlds.
I really hope this gets more views!
Clean animation, great music and sound, and designs that feel like you took the best out of all of the tripod designs before it!
And I don't know if it's intentional, but is the green tripod eye a reference to the Jeff Wayne Tripod?
I also love the heat ray being a device separate from the body and held up like a lamp--reminds me of old illustrations found in some of the novel's prints.
Overall, fantastic work!
Aw, thanks a lot. Yes, I know what you mean about amalgamating other designs. It's been done to death, so I went back to the source as well. Many thanks. :)
Lol! i have the one with the correa illustrations aka the novels prints/illustrations and they are my favs!
My only criticism is the force fields, one of the reasons War of the Worlds works is we CAN kill them, we just haven't the firepower to do so. The despair of knowing your enemy is mortal but you don't have the means to defeat them is a big part of the story so many miss and was missing from the 2006 movie.
In regards to everything else, very nicely done. Keep up the good work.
The torpedo ram Thunderchild takes out at least two Martian tripods and I think the Horse drawn artillery get one. But yeah ... its a case of "bows and arrows against the lightning"
Hi! Aww, I know what you mean. The believable nature of the fighting machines in the book, with them being taken out relatively easily, was something I liked as well. But I really needed an excuse to do some cool shielding.
Thanks you for your lovely comment. :)
Farewell, Thunderchild! @@mouseeatscat667
@@danafoxconcepts UUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Sorry-I just made that comment too-I didn't see yours. Yes, the original book had no shields. I think this was first invented for the 1950s movie (or perhaps it was in the '38 radio play-I can't remember)
Nicely polished short. Definitely evokes Welles' original atmosphere of eerie horror effectively. Even the ending scene in the museum is plausible, and a great tribute to Welles' ideals.
That's what I love most about HG Wells - he had such a fascinating mind and an outlook on the future of humanity. I'm delighted it came through. Sci fi machines and flash lasers are one thing, but the 'feeling' of a work is much more important. Thank you :)
@@danafoxconcepts Another Wells quote I love is, "It is possible to believe that all the past is but the beginning of a beginning, and that all that is and has been is but the twilight of the dawn. It is possible to believe that all the human mind has ever accomplished is but the dream before the awakening."
Wells and Ray Bradbury; they both were amazing horror writers, but also incredible optimists.
Definitely, well done Dana, I'd love to see Welles vision brought to life properly on the big screen and not these modern interpretations.
Anyone notice the QR code on the U.L.L.A. sign at 3:16?? Tried it and got a link to Wikipedia's homepage...wouldve been a nice touch as an easteregg to fill in some background details or storyline.
You know, it crossed my mind to create some meta-hyperlink to something cool with that but sadly I ran out of time towards the end. Maybe it'll make it into a re-edit. :)
@@danafoxconcepts BTW, it was a great Easter egg anyhow. Keep up the fantastic work, you got skillz.
Aw, thank you so much! I'll make more little easter egg meta-references in the next ones.
I'm just pleased someone would have been curious enough to try it. :D
Love the ULLA homage to the musical!
A coincidence, I assure you! ;) Thanks, kind sir.
And the original book art hanging in the museum!
Amazing, just love it, as a fan of HGs work this is the closest to the book and what he may have envisioned, well done 😊
Jeff would be pleased
What an awesome video. I love the way Dana gave credit to HG Wells at the end.
Aw, thank you! I don't think my outlook on sci fi - or life - would be quite the same if it weren't for Mr. Wells! He was an exceptional man. :)
I really love the animation but the alien language looks too familiar
Hi! Thanks for your comment. Can you say more about the Martian language? What might have been more believable?
Best wishes,

Nice touch! Makes my Inner Martian proud😂 OOOOOOHHHLLLAAAAAAAA
U.L.L.A is a nice touch i like that.
It's very impressive, i like your version of the Tripods as it's easy to create them but difficult to make them look of advanced technology. I've often found them to be designed clunky and clumsy because of how they moved. You've managed to make the tripods and their battle formations look believable. Did you make this whilst listening to Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds?
Actually I did have it on rather a lot! I immersed myself in imagery and sounds. My Dad gave me the vinyl some time ago and it's one of my prized possessions :)
Thank you for your comment - the tripods' movements were inspired by ballet dancers. So I watched a lot of those for inspiration!
Bought the album way back when. Even have the "Forever Autumn" 45rpm single, too. At 17 (I think I was, then) it was a great album. Played the tar out of it. And, you can't go wrong with Richard Burton.
There is a stage play, based on the album, as well. Seen that on YT somewhere.
@hoosez Ah yes, I have tickets to go see it next year in London. It's probably going to be amazing :O
@@danafoxconcepts they reenact the album pretty closely.
You'll like it.
Brilliantly concise interpretation of the story and I love the reference to the sound the Martians made in the name of the University Library Learning Association, U.L.L.A.
Apologies for not replying to comments sooner. I didn't even know I'd turned commenting on! Thanks for the encouraging replies and the critique/feedback.
I value constructive criticism and appreciation.
Have a lovely weekend.

Amazing work.
Very impressive stuff, and as far as I can see the ONLY WotW depiction showing the actual Martian civilisation. Excellent renditions of the Fighting Machines, about the only difference from the description in the book is the shields (which, of course, HG Wells never included, but this was quite a while before the concept of defensive shielding in sci-fi was even first thought of). If you do any more WotW animations may I respectfully request the scene with the battle between the Martians and HMS Thunderchild? I think aside from the Jeff Wayne musical NONE of the other movie or TV series have ever actually included that scene, and it's arguably THE most badass scene in the entire book.
And you, young Skywalker; we shall watch your career with great interest.... ;)
That scene contains my favourite line of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds: "The leaden sky was lit by green flashes. Cylinder followed cylinder and nothing and no-one was left now to fight them. The Earth... belonged to the Martians".
It is a great scene. If I think I can do it justice and can find the time, I certainly will :)
@@danafoxconcepts Thanks, much appreciated :)
I really love your interpretation of the Martians; very much like Wells described and consistent with biology. Well done!
3:17 I saw what you did there :)))))
😉
I’d like a movie made more in line with H.G’s novel. 1890’s England, no shields, cannon can destroy the Martian machines, but eventually defeated. THAT is a war. Not extermination
This is amazing. Need more of this level of quality amongst fan made War of the Worlds projects. A true gem.
Fantastic work!
This is such an encouragement - thank you so much for your words! :)
Love the creativity and surrealism, I wonder though whether the ending could have added a little extra by having a little gleam of light/life just sparking from one of the creatures as an unknown warning??
Oooh, now that gives me chills. Maybe if I do a longer version. :)
Amazing animation! Excellent story on all levels. And the music. spot on!
Aw that's very kind of you - thank you!
A better version of WotW in 4 minutes than Spielberg managed in 2 hours !!
Awww, you! I'm not sure - although the film did have particularly unlikeable characters, the visuals were beautiful! But thank you :)

Martian Martia: Astsm!
At over 100 years old, this is one of only five existing specimens from the invasion.
Though biolopical, the Martians are technically considered a cyberatic race, due to their relance on bodily internal and eternal mechanisms.
We know now that the invaders communicated through telepathy. The means and mechanism of this method of thought transfer has been fully documented.
A beautiful creation from an incredible story. You’ve taken 3D design to new levels. Awesome work ❤
The heat ray being depicted as essentially a rapid-fire "camera flash" instead of a more traditionally sci-fi laser beam is such an inspired touch. A lot closer to the book's description as well.
Thanks for recognising that. Reading the book, I often imagine how terrifying it would be to experience the rather 'familiar' flash of a camera as a weapon. :O
In the book it was a ray of heat, not of light. Watchers could only follow it's path by flame erupting from things the beam hit.
No it's not, still they have shields and in the original they didn't have that. In fact they were taken out by a wire cannon that the British had and the warship took out 2 of them. So it wasn't a total slotter like in the movies.
@@donaldgrant9067 I was talking about the heat ray specifically.
The QR Code under the display of the Martian body leads to an article on the Rock Parrot. WTF?
Nice film. Btw the earth model in museum at the end was spinning backwards…
Well spotted. :)
At the end of nineteenth century, jealous eyes glazed upon the Earth....
I am amazed, that the qr code work, but for a big ship, prinz adalbert.
I am so so glad to be 4:01
Chances of anything coming from Mars is a million to one he said. But still they come.
yes it should be HGwells original set in Victorian england
Good work. I know I shouldn't question the genius of H.G. Wells but I was never really satisfied with the ending. Would a technologically advanced race like the Martians really not think of airborne viruses as a potential threat? I always found that hard to swallow.
If the book was written closer to our time period, it would have been written as though the martians think their advanced technology would 'filter' out the impurities like shielding or some other methods. Since the book is old, Wells never thought of a concept like life support systems.
Interesting point. I imagine perhaps after so long (perhaps hundreds of thousands of years - longer?), that the Martians' memories of bacteria and their effects might have been lost. If they were a dying civilisation, I imagine they may have been through a fair share of internal conflicts too, over resources, scientific ideologies, and so forth. Knowledge can get lost easily in times like that.
not really.. think about when Europeans sailed to far off undiscovered islands for the first time and met the indiginous population .. They got diseases and illness's that they were not prepared for .. Measles for instance may be common and reasonably safe to us .. but to an alien .... well what would be the chance it had ever come across it before never mind be immunised .. look at us with COVID .. in 2020 ..will all our fancy drugs ..and it still ran rampant across the globe .. ( not going to go into political crap about covid it was to make the point)
Love the beginning bit and the martian elder chamber design depicting the martians learning all about the humans in just a flash of a couple of Images! This gave me some ideas on drawings. I might post them when I'm done! Absolutely brilliant, Keep it up!
Thank you so much! I'd love to see those drawings :)
Nicely done. I enjoyed it. I was a child when the original WOTW came out, so remember seeing it in a theater. Scared the piss out of me!
Excellent rendition of, essentially, the entire novel. An accurate portrayal of Wells' Martians and their technology: the launch and landing of the 'cylinders', down to the "cold and unsympathetic" monitoring of Earth by the Martians. Even Wells' mention of crows attacking the dead aliens in the fallen war machines. I would also like seeing this expanded into a feature, but set in the late 19th Century like the novel. The "museum" at the end was a nice touch: I could see that actually happening; I live near New Orleans' WWII Museum!😅😅
Oh lovely! I nearly went to NOLA for my honeymoon, but the pandemic stopped it. Soon, soon... :)
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I can tell you enjoyed the details, which makes me very happy!
It's just not the same without Tom Cruise
Haha!
So much for "superior intelligence" 😂
Well done.
Covered every plot point and the animation was excellent.
Cool concept for the war machines.
Particularly liked the real world/yet noncannon ending. With the VM museum. We would definitely do that, after such an event.
✌
We SO would, wouldn't we?! Those poor bacteria didn't even get a little tiny trophy. So glad you enjoyed! Thanks :)
Wow. I love this!! So like Wells novel ❤❤❤❤
Did anyone else scan the QR code in the museum??

The space martian tripod for movie
Fun fact: everyone thinks the martians succumbed to Earth diseases. But paying close attention to what’s actually said, they had no defense against *any* microbes. I.e., they decomposed to death.
Indeed!
01:49 I was _really_ anticipating (a la Jeff Wayne's musical War of the Worlds) the painfully slow unscrewing of the cylinder.
I'm going to tantalise you now: It exists, but I had to cut it for time. Maybe in an extended version!
An amazing story but clearly un realistic in many ways.
VM Day
Am I correct in assuming that VM Day ( 3:09) means Victory over Mars Day?
If so, and if the Martians were stopped by terrestrial air borne microbes, could that be called a “Victory “?
Never doubt the capacity for patriotic human beings to take undeserved credit ;)
Always made me wonder why these Martians, with all their advanced technology, didn't take bacteria/viruses/diseases into account when invading another world.
I always wondered that too! I reckon they were desperate. I imagine a civilisation doesn't get to that stage of near-extinction without losing a lot of their culture along the way, including perhaps the historical knowledge of germs etc.
Excellent animation and direction! Please create a longer piece. Peace
It's interesting to see this from the invaders' POV. The original story, and just about every adaptation of it, leaves them kind of one dimensional. They invaded because they wanted our resource-rich world for themselves, and the fact we lived here was little more than a major annoyance. The tripods are often called 'war machines' or 'fighting machines', but the truth is that they are really just 'pest control machines' or 'vermin exterminating machines'.
To see the invasion from their viewpoint, then, makes them seem less distant. For all it's very many faults, the last BBC TV adaptation shares this with this short film. There were a couple of scenes where, for all that the aliens were very alien, they acted in a startlingly human way to certain things... and yet were chillingly indifferent to the humans they encountered, other than as a potential food source!
This is such a wonderful comment - thank you!
Due to duration limitations, I had to edit out quite a lot. But I do have rather a lot more to say about the Martians and their perspective. I think you'll enjoy it! Stay tuned :)
That is really well done. I am, however, concerned that a tripod with legs that end in points can't possibly walk without falling over. It needs "Feet" that can anchor 2 of the legs down while the third takes a step, otherwise, the leg taking the step will just dip the whole structure to the ground.
Ahh, I take your point. As it were. It was sort of difficult to find the mechanical engineering of a walking tripod during the r & d phase. :)
Great job cast and crew. To the point H.G. quote is profound.
Humanization of the races is what is needed. We are under attack but the don't where space suits, two piece with button down shirts a tie and lace up leather shoes. Seated in the state rooms an capitalist of power.
We're all one, as Mr Wells rightly pointed out. Thank you fro your thoughtful comment. :)
This video will take so many view. I'm reserving my place.
For a little practice piece, it's doing remarkably well!
This was great. I loved it.
Interesting how pop culture has given the tripods a single headlamp type ‘eye’ when Wells made no mention of this, and how the the heat ray has become the primary weapon, when gas mortars were primary in the book and the heat ray was effectively a side arm, a mopping up device. Still waiting for a version true to the original story. I think Peter Jackson could do it justice.
In this reality, at least Wikipedia survived. The QR code at the museum takes you there.
Thanks the gods! Where would we be without Wikipedia? ;)

It is a brilliant film!
A gorgeous fiction with a FX like from Hollywood
Oh I wish! Perhaps with more practice. But much obliged. :)
Nicely done. I'm constantly disappointed by the Hollywood versions that are in the wrong time period and are always "America saves the world" bs!
It's curious that the QR code in the museum scene links to the Australian rock parrot LOL. What's its link to the invasion? Is it the cause of the bio attack that killed the Martians? Fascinating LOL 😆
Haha, the QR was one which I used which was public domain and, as I was so busy at the time, I didn't check it myself. I'm delighted that some people have and it's usually the sort of detail which I would have made point to something relevant (or completely non-sensical!).
In this case though, the extent of the Australian Rock Parrot's involvement must remain a mystery, even to me ;)
@danafoxconcepts no, I think you should run with it. What was it specifically about the Australian rock parrots biology that made it so deadly to the Martians? How can we weaponise this as a safeguard against future attacks. Do we reverse engineer the Martian tripods and do a pre-emptive deployment / attack on Mars with Australian rock parrot bio laced aerosols? Would this be ethical considering the possible genocide of the wiping out of the Martian species? Should we show them the mercy they didn't show us? Or should we just cluster bomb the planet with genetically modified cyborg kamikaze Australian rock parrots? There's a massive storyline potential here mate 😉
My friend, if I ever need a co-writer for anything, I'm coming for you. 😁
I wonder why the globe in the museum is spinning in the wrong direction?
What does that tell you? :)

Quite the imaginative piece creating compelling interest with it's differences from the movies & of course it's excellent imagery, sound & composition from the opening scene till the ending.
I knew my overactive imagination would be useful some day. Thanks for your lovely comment. :)
It amazes me, at how many people tear chunks out of the WOTW's movies and made for TV series, yet never actually read the book. They are based on the book, nothing more in most cases. This short was excellent and adapted most of the salient points of the book.😊
Agreed - one of my favourite aspects of literature, sci fi in particular, is that it can inform creative thinking, inspire us to be derivative in an original way. I hope people enjoy the book - it really was a groundbreaking piece of work for the time.
