On my next two bike builds I’m trying to decide if I want to with the Peak 4550 or the Wake 6560. Can’t go wrong either way, Princeton wheels are definitely top tier!!
Dear Robb, don't want to rain on your parade, "BUT".... Sure they're expensive, pretty and well made. Unfortunately all these super high end carbon wheel-sets have a "Major Problem". And that problem is, they do not have any type of rotational wheel balance system. I can take a set of pretty good $800 Chinese aero carbon wheels, balance them perfectly and they will blow the doors off the very top of the line Princeton or ZIPP wheels. You see if a wheel is off balance by as little as 8 grams, when they spin at 40 ~ 50 mph + the spinning centrifugal forces turn the 8 grams into 8 oz. Then the 8 oz starts to invite the entire weight of the wheel to start oscillating and act like sledge hammers swinging off your front and rear axle. Thus delivering pure Garbage Performance at high speeds. Don't believe me? Install your Princeton wheels on your bike, then put your bike on a work stand, put it in a high gear and crank the rear wheel as fast as you can... Guess what, your bike is now shaking producing very powerful oscillation vibrations. Now imagine your front wheel is also doing the same thing at high speeds. This powerful forces makes your bike handle very nervously at high speeds and often results in the dreaded HIGH SPEED WOBBLE..! Off balance wheels produce what is called "Interrupted inertia" which eats up Watts like like a big bowl of Lucky Charms. But if you balance your wheels, they produce "smooth flowing inertia" which not only makes your bike handle like its on Rails, but improves rolling efficiency thus saving tons of Watts. So think about this... 50% of your bike is basically static i.e. frame, fork, h-bar, saddle, etc. The other 50% spins at a high rate of speed. So don't you think if you balance that spinning 50% there will be some kind of added performance you never saw before? TKS for reading, Dan Sotelo
I get that Princeton is more like a status symbol, but you could have gotten the Farsports FSD45CM-30T with the Extralite hubs for less than half the price while also saving 154g (1128g total).
Excellent review, just received my 2nd set of Peak 4550's this week and did the same as you did... weight everything LOL. The only difference is I have the Matt white finish and DT swiss 240 hubs. My first set (launch edition) was on my rim brake bike and absolutely loved them. Hopefully you'll have a ride review video with the Peaks.
Those wheels look really dope!!! Looking at them on the website doesn’t do them any justice compared to on this video. That gloss finish really pops!! Princeton Carbonworks has always been my favorite wheel because of the design, and the customization of the different finishes, colors and hub choices. @GCperformance at Bicycle Generation in Florida is definitely my go to guy for wheels and parts. Like you said very knowledgeable and great customer service.
YES! Folks be sleep on the Customer Service piece. I understand there are thousands other brands with similar options but… they not Princeton! Like the saying goes: “You can still the recipe but it won’t taste the same” 👈🏽 #RobbArmstrong
Had some bad Galfers my last purchase. They did not machine them well and there were micro burs in the wave pattern. Only issue I've ever had with them.
😮, I did the edit a few weeks ago and forgot to add it, 🤦🏽♂️ but… it’s updated now. Link is in the description & below, 😎 #RobbArmstrong Tubeless Valves ⬇️⬇️ amzn.to/3XA2F7C

Not hating just curious why you chose to buy these wheels which are 100% from China manufacturers such as Elite Wheels or Light Bicycle but at more than double the price?
What are your thoughts on the Peak 4550s?
Also, are you running tubeless? “it’s the only way, 🥹”

Yup, can’t go wrong with either. If you wanna save a lil weight 4550, if weight doesn’t matter then go with the deeper set, 🙂
