- ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 with the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D CPU is the fastest laptop I've used this year. Just like the desktop options the 7945HX3D now uses 128MB of 3D V-cache which is insane. Enjoy the review!

This is the fastest gaming laptop I've tested so far! What do you guys think of the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D CPU? Feel free to like and subscribe if you enjoyed the video. Thank you for your time!
Matthew, I love your laptop reviews. Have you ever reviewed the Corsair 1600 and is it good for $1300?
The specs are great! This is a 16:9 2022 chassis; would love to see AMD have the same chassis as Intel in 2024 (i.e. Scar 16 & 18). A webcam upgrade would be cool, too. 😏
@MatthewMoniz when does it go on sale though? I thought it would go on sale yesterday.
Check the lows
wow 3.6 kidney 🤣🤣 Now thats a highlight
Yea tbh, at this point the "k" as in 2k 3k 2.5k etc means kidney
Your kidney is cheap.
This thing looks like it would cost 500 more bucks to me, rather than 50 bucks more than the normal version.
Exactly the increase price is probably going to be way out of proportion to the (minor) performance boost.
It's pretty crazy that this gets 1hr better battery, while also being faster. Kudos AMD.
Still loses to shintel. No Kudos to AMD.
I'm in love with my 7950X3D PC and this thing basically puts that CPU into a laptop. Very nice 💯
don't know why ROG didn't upgrade the amd ver. of Strix
2023 intel version got better screen and chasis and cooling
so not fair for team red
Yep i wanna strix scar 18 r9 7945hx3d vcache
Yeah... I remember filtering anything without 500 Nits brightness when I was shopping for my laptop. I mean putting 300 Nits screen on $1300+ laptops is just a scam, which is like 80% of all gaming laptops.
i just wish asus would bring back the removable battery option like back in the day because that's what I've been doing before in order for the battery to stay healthy and also to test really well the cpu and gpu's limit on how long it will maintain high fps for gaming for a couple of hours
I'm assuming that, since it's using the same chassis as the 7945HX model, that there's only the two down firing speakers, no tweeters in the hindge openings like on the Intel Scar, and 2021 AMD Scar?...
That's an amazing processor. It's a shame its stuffed into a cheap feeling all plastic laptop. I want x3D in a high end all metal laptop not an old plastic one.
That would be nice
yeah idk why ROG didn't make the Scar lineup full of aluminum/magnesium
Its not about latencies but about size. In more than one way actually. The actual benefit is the storage size of the 3d cache. It can prefetch a lot more data. The reason why its 3d is because cache memory has been suffering from a scaling issue. While with new production processes the components inside a cpu get smaller and smaller cache got smaller at a lower and lower rate. TSMC has announced that the cache in their upcoming 3nm node wont be any smaller than the current 5nm node. So AMD has decided to 3d stack the cache in order to increase its capacity while retaining acceptable die sizes.
Ur not even disputing what he said, you're talking about how amd is using it to save die space he actually outlined the surprisingly very correct reason for the higher vcache being the main memory access latency for the cpu. Main memory has continually gotten tiny latency uplifts compared to cous continually bottleneckong then further and further forcing more and more cache to compensate. In the middle 2000's it came in the form of intel adding a whole new level of cache (l3) and since zen 3 and rocket lake it has come through massive l2 and l3 cache increases. So yeah you've just explained how it's implemented but it is being implementedef in the first place because as he said, memory latency is terrible. Amd especially is never going to increase costs doing 3dvcache just because it's not taking up as much die space lmao.
@@Frozoken If he meant it in comparison to ram then he wasnt clear about it. In the video it sounds like hes talking about it in comparison to non 3d cache.
Which one do you feel has less lag/feels snapier or more responsive? The AMD or the INTEL? I find the intel to be a bit laggy at times. Mind you I have a 13980hx G18.
does it has the core parking button like the 7900x3d on desktop?
I have Acer nitro 5 ryzen 5 5600h 8gb ram and rtx 3050 . I have a second monitor too which is 1080p and a wireless RGB mouse .I have seen several laptop setups like this but never got the answer The question is should I use my setup on power supply always or should I use it on battery after charging. I always use a second monitor. And a RGB keyboard. And what you all recommend ?
Hope we get to see this new chip in some other brands. And I have to say even when this is not a cheap product is cheaper than the razer blades.
Ya Razer is definitely pricey!
Dude went full professor to teach the hell out of dies and stuff 😅
DID YOU LEARN SOMETHING!? I want a full essay handed in by the end of the day. If you fail you're out of the school
What happens to these laptops? do you sale them? do you keep them?
May I ask what is the good chip Ryzen or RTX 40 Series?
As someone who can't build a PC because I'm always on the go but still need great performance - I'm still holding out hope that either Q4|23 or Q1|24 brings some new Radeon laptop options. Would love to see something like a STRIX 18 with a solid combo of this processor and a Radeon graphics option competitive to the 80/90 mobile chips. 17" is my minimum because my eyes aren't as good as they used to be and my version of "portable" is if I can pack it away to bring with me in my giant travel bag and set up on a desk (aka I truly just wish for a desktop replacement that can be moved).
That might take a while dude
Yeah I want Amd GPUs too
Yeah, understandable. You need some kind of "Nomad" laptop. I guess you will have to wait a year to two more. But its getting better. I heard that in Q1/25 AMD might make your wish come true. They are all in on mobile/laptops for that generation of CPU && GPU
@@_sky_3123 really?
Pleaaaaaase AMD, put that chip in a mini-PC!!
That is a sweet laptop. I want one.
When will be available in the market?
Where do they sell this?
how do you find the latency between the AMD and the intel for this type of laptop? and Why hasn't amd laptops gotten the 18" screen?
They got it. Check Dell Alienware M18 AMD version.
Where to fins it?
Two things. 1. Please don't say, "Single Core Clock Speeds" when talking about single core performance, because it makes it sound like you're going to compare how many Gigahertz each processor runs at in single core loads. When comparing different architecture CPUs, "clock speeds" aren't relevant, and they also weren't what you were actually talking about, which was confusing. Secondly, you buried the lead by not talking about gaming until the 6 minute mark. It is cool that the 3d v cache makes an incrementally small difference in non-gaming tasks, but by starting the review talking about 1-2% differences, it really makes the processor seem like nothing special and undermines all the buildup you just did talking about why the cache is better.
Single-core scores matter little in the modern era.
Correct. It's artificially boosted just for these 1-core benchmarks. Would be better to test with 2 or 4 threads.
yeah. It's funny to see how many cores Intel tried to stuff into their CPUs only for them to still lost to AMD in multicore lmao
@@Agent_AlphaIntel cores can't compete since zen 2 remember zen 2 tr shut Intel down on hdet
Still, AMD's best chip gets put in an outdated laptop design. This Scar 17 is last year's body. If you get an Intel version, you can get the redesign with a better and 16x10 display. Isn't that odd? It's like, if you want the best chip, you can't get it in the newest design, but you better believe you're still paying top dollar for the thing. And the old excuse that games all run at 16x9 and so 16x10 has black bars no longer applies. I can't remember the last game I played that doesn't run at a 16x10 resolution...
Thanks, dad. 💖
No scar 16 review?
I think it would have made more sense if it was esports games that was tested for performance since those are more cpu bound afaik. Though, why is Asus the only one with amd these processors anyway? I really would have loved this for the Legion 7
E Sports titles won't see any benifits , since due to 3dvcache the CPU clock is bit lower than regular also,
3d cache helps to load textures fast in GPU bound games.
Well there goes my heart and lungs and my kidneys 🤣 then I'll have enough money to grab this awesome laptop
This is the modern capitalist society.
@MathhewMoniz. can you please tell us when this product is available and what will be the price of this product?
This is the first ever real gaming generation so i'm super excited to see RTX 5000+Arrow Lake laptops in 2025 with mini-led screens. It will definitely outsell desktops for the first time since early 2000's
Why does it look so much like a Legion?
Dream Machines also have laptops with intel and AMD
i wish razer blade would use this cpu instead that would be great!
I used to love Asus until I opened my laptop and found blotches of liquid metal all over the board itself. I have no idea how it didnt short out. My cpu temps would always be 90c+ even at idle. Sound would glitch out. Basic youtube videos would stutter. Once I cleaned it all up and replaced their shotty liquid metal application with normal paste, all the issues went away. Turns out it's a huge issue with the G15 advantage edition. It's the number one issue with that laptop. I use to love Asus but now I think theyre trash. I'll wait for the Lenovo alternative.
Ouch that's unfortunate! I'm glad you were able to fix it though
@@MatthewMoniz I'm glad I was able to fix it too. The process was terrifying though lol.
Wow the review is already out. Wonder which country will it come out
USA for sure! I'd have to check there website
@@MatthewMoniz yeah. Us Asia may not have this model. Just like the Asus Strix G15 AE. It's bound to happen 😂
@@joelconolly5574you guys get the better AMD laptops inc lenovo so I would say it's a draw
Now a company needs to make a thin& light laptop with the same CPU but no dGPU. For students. Or maybe the Ryzen Z1?
As I've found out thanks to the replies. The 7945 doesn't have a 780M iGPU... So not this CPU then but the 7940 or the 7840 with the 780M.
Cant fit a 16 core in a thin and light, the cooling required would set it on fire 🙃
@@bennoboy97you absolutely could tho. Legion Slim 7 and the Razer Blade has a GPU to cool. Without the GPU and some space optimization. It could happen. Might not be light at that point but as long as it has that RDNA 780M iGPU.
20-30w is possible, something like msi modern 14 has the capability
@Qimchiy Yeah you could ofc fit it in that body, but as soon as you try any multi cored load, it would explode
@@bennoboy97 over exaggerating again
First, I have the 2080bsuper version with the 4k touch screen , time for the upgrade ❤
That will be a nice upgrade! Let me know how you like it.
0:48 The Apple A16 apparantly has 20MB of L2. No wonder it's snappy AF, and drains the battery.
The apple M2 max processor has 36mb of L2 cache and 48mb of L3 cache, which is insane because I don't think they are stacking their cache like AMD x3D.
@@hyperion8382 Well M2 max is pretty expensive as well. 3D V cache just like chiplets makes stuff cheaper.
@@DragonOfTheMortalKombat haha you're right. But imagine that one day, AMD offering APUs with x3D and integrated graphics with the power of 4090.
Maybe this will happen in the future, and I'm looking forward to it.
Good video.
Well done ASUS.
I like what I see here.
One thing I would like even more, have the entire chassis in orange color.
mmmmm
Thanks! All Orange would be an interesting colour choice. lol
@@MatthewMoniz Hey, did you see this new announcement by Nvidia about DLSS 3.5? Interesting.

The GPU makes the choice easy.
Nitro all the way
Kind of surprised it weigh so little for being a gaming laptop. Tjo black so fingerring magnet 😢
Useful video but I find a bit frustrating you never quantify the performance difference. I would suggest you overimpose a big percentage number with the difference. Hard to enjoy the charts otherwise
Fair enough! Ill make sure I'll include it for the next one

If I was getting a laptop with amd, I want a desktop cpu like a gaming laptop that has the ryzen 9 3950x desktop cpu in it such as the xmg gaming laptop. I only game in 4k and I don't do any transcoding at all for videos or compressing videos. For videos I only do uncompressed videos. I'm not really a fan of compressed videos. I prefer uncompressed audio and uncompressed video. I would get the Intel i9-11900k desktop cpu from the origin pc eon-17x gaming laptop with it's 4k display, 3080 ti 16gb vram version and removable battery with 4 nvme ssds since I need as much ssds as possible when I can get 8tb ssd for each ssd with 32tb ssds. I don't know if 32tb would be enough since I use alot of 4k uncompressed videos and I also rip my 4k discs in uncompressed iso format as well from my external 4k drive. I have not even mentioned my library of games from steam, gog and epic games as well as emulators snd android apps. I already rip my cds in uncompressed format and I have plastic bins full of 4k, blu ray and dvd movies and games too. When I record 4k videos from my sony xperia 1 iv android phone from it's 4k display, I record with uncompressed videos only and uncompressed raw pictures when taking pictures. Any kind of compression is my biggest pet peeve. When I use motion cam pro, a 10 second uncompressed 4k video is already 2gb. I'm still looking for an app to open my 4k uncompressed videos that I record in raw dng format. If there was an option to use real film by plugging in my phone from the usb c port I would. I actually like taking pictures with film like the kodak and fuji film cameras instead of using digital for photography and videography. The only thing that I like about digital is the hi res 4k. If there was 4k laser discs I would use it instead. I prefer my audio to be analog instead of digital but I only sacrifice with digital because most music and videos use digital plus cds are easier to store since I don't have the room and space to store analog vinyl records. I even still buy casette tapes. Digital is mostly artificial due to a.i. and computational photography but I'm more of a purist when it comes to audio and video recording. Trying to improve the camera every year for smartphones is not beneficial since most people use social media to post there videos and pictures and social media already compresses it and turns out to be mediocre. It's like compressing mp3 audio files even more and you can't get the data back that is already being thrown away when social media and streaming services already compress them until social media and streaming service support uncompressed formats with true lossless audio and true lossless video. It would cost more money but you are getting high quality and the results speak for themselves.
That would use too much power for a battery to be viable at all. We’re talking 450w here minimum.
The 2019 msi gt76 titan and the alienware area 51m both use the Intel i9-9900k desktop cpu in a gaming laptop. The 2021 origin pc eon-17x even has an option for putting an Intel i9-11900k desktop cpu and the 3080 mobile gpu 16gb vram version on the gaming laptop with a 97 watt removable battery with 2 power bricks being 250 watts being a total 500 watts. I wish every laptop has a removable battery just like the older early 2000's laptops instead of just making the laptop too thin that not having a removable battery is a sacrifice when the battery will degrade over time. I wanted the 2021 origin pc eon-17x when linus tech tips made a video about the laptop having a 4k display while playing microsoft flight simulator and it has a similar form factor and size as the msi gt 77 titan. I have the 2022 razer blade 15 with an Intel i9 1200h mobile cpu, 4k 144 hz and 3080 ti 16gb vram version. I wish the battery was removable on my razer gaming laptop since the battery already stops holding a charge and it automatically shuts off when it's unplugged from an outlet and it will only work when the laptop is being plugged into an outlet and the battery is stuck at 99% and won't go to 100%. I constantly plugged the laptop when the battery is low and when the battery is at 100%, I would unplug the laptop. It's mostly likely that the heat killed the battery faster since my razer laptop gets very hot. I always leave the laptop plugged into an outlet to get better performance instead of battery power when playing with native 4k ray tracing enabled, dlss off, v sync off and motion blur off and all the graphics maxed out. I use as much vram as possible for every game that I play in 4k since I only play games in 4k. I wish there was an option for using noctua fans and noctua heat pipes on the gaming laptops since noctua has varieties of fan sizes for desktop pc's for better performance while lowering the temperatures at a comfortable temperature while remaining as silent as possible.

I'm also interested in a 4k gaming laptop for traveling that I can carry with me in my backpack when I travel and I wanna game on the go. The highest capacity ssd for handheld gaming devices like the steam deck and asus rog ally is only 4tb that I found on amazon.
