The drummer's sister committed suicide after being bullied while they were both really young and this song is about him blaming himself for her death at the time. The song is supposed to reflect a sort of fragmented mind state that he was in as a child which explains the abrupt transitions and tempo changes throughout the song. He loved his sister so much to the point that apparently he got really fucked up on drugs and tried to dig up his sister's grave with his bare hands because he missed her so much which is where the lyric "I tried to bore a hole into the ground, breaking all the fingers and the nails from my hand" came from. Oh, and his sister's name was Skye which is why the album is named what it is.
wow
disturbing facts - dropped
Never knew this was a thing, thanks
Holy fuck, didnt knew this, despise the fact ive been hearing Mastodon since 2011
I knew the album was for his sister. But I didn’t know this story. Quite haunting, but interesting. Thanks for sharing
I thought Crack The Skye was the song about Brann's sister, Oblivion is about astral projection.
JoRdOguitarman1 The entire album is about a boy astral projecting back to Czarist Russia, getting captured to be used for a Divination ceremony, and getting rescued and saved by Rasputin but the lyrics for Oblivion and Crack the Skye have dual meanings to fit both the concept narrative but also to pay tribute to his sister.
Mastodon is definitely hard to get into at first. It took me some listens, but after some time something clicked and I can't get enough!
Honestly Mastodon clicked immediately for me. I loved cracked the Skye, leviathan as soon as I heard em
I just found them out a couple of years ago...wasn't hard at all for me to get into. They are now my favorite band
i listened to leviathan without hearing any mastodon song before it and the moment the blood and thunder riff hit i knew they were good
This album is an absoloute masterpiece. Listen to The Last Baron.
The Last Baron is epic!
And The Czar! Those are their two best songs for my money. Also check out Roots Remain and Ancient Kingdom from their last album!
Crack the Skye is my personal favorite album. Blood mountain is my least favorite personally
The Last Baron is…I don’t know…I can’t put into words how amazing it is. It’s a true masterpiece.
"i love the guys voice" lol there are three singers in this song
there were obviously talking about brent
All three of them are good, though.
I love his voice too, but you’re right there are 3 singers
lol LiV is dopeee idgaf.. i like that they indulge themselves .. Dont let them break your hearts
Rainbow - Stargazer
Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell
Queensrÿche - Eyes Of A Stranger
Norbath totally agree with all three ! Great suggestions 👊🏼
Nice ideas there. I think Empire might be a better Queensryche choice, just for the relevance of the lyrics.
Heaven and Hell is a great shout
Death - The Flesh And The Power It Holds
The abrupt changes are the prog influence they have. Great band, incredible musicians
When you realize what an amazing drummer Brann Dailor is and realize he is singing you understand just how good Mastodon is.
Never seen so many butthurt fans in one place...
What we want is unbiased opinions and genuine reactions from people who try to understand and appreciate genres they don't usually listen to. And that's what we get.
To those talking about them not liking a song for the technicality or the originality it has, you confuse two things : opinion and analyze. An opinion is subjective and an analyze try to be as objective as possible. They understand when a song/"piece" is complex or has original pattern (against their current music background) but they tell us what they feel or understand when discovering a song for the first time.
To those saying they can't understand the deepness of a band because they only heard 2 or 3 songs, understand the concept/format we have right now is based on discovering new groups and going through all aspects of a genre. They can't do that (Well if you do that one day it would be hilarious to go through Frank Zappa, John Zorn or even Buckethead discography for example, hope you have time! haha)
To those sad about them not liking a song you like, well... As someone who love music in all forms and love to listen to weird genres for most people, such as free jazz or "musique concrète", you can't always convey the joy you had listening to something and be sure the person in front of you understand through his feelings the same thing. That's why music is fascinating, any song can provoke so many different feelings for each person.
Thank you for what you're doing Lost In Vegas, keep it real!
it's definitely not unbiased, and pretty soon they can't say this type of music isn't what they usually listen to ;)
but I get your sentiment and agree
Good comment, spot on...as someone who loves heavy music be it high on fire, tool, etc and prog rush, yes, crimson etc. I am shocked that I do not like Mastodon but it just does not resonate with me, can't pinpoint it but it just doesn't. And people getting upset that someone doesn't like what they like blows my mind... the whole point of this is to experience someone else's opinion, at least it is for me.
Well "unbiaised opinion" is an oxymoron, I made a mistake translating my thoughts in english sorry ^^
What I wanted to say is more like they try to keep an open-minded approach and express their opinions without any barrier/filter!
I agree they'll start to like songs they didn't really like at first but it's all about the discovery and the first listening here! Maybe after they think they have enough background they'll try to dig back some recommendations or niche genre of metal! Who knows!
Pantera- Domination (studio recording or live in Moscow)
Death- Symbolic or Crystal mountain
Tool- Lateralus or Vicarious
Mastodon - The Czar - That’s the song to listen to. Blew me the fuck away when I first heard it.
Since you liked this chorus so much, I'd rec their more recent albums - lots more clean singing. The Motherload, Steambreather, Octopus Has No Friends or Jaguar God
Guys, not everything is about smooth transitions and progressions. The abrupt change is to throw you back into the verse, it’s on purpose. It’s weird, I think these first listen videos really suit punchy songs with instrumental and vocal hooks, but stuff like this I don’t think is as suited. Specifically with this its a big ol’ concept album with twists and turns. As an example, on Pimp A Butterfly ‘King Kunta’ is catchy but for me songs like “u” are where the real meat of that album is.
Anyway, metal has a lot of offbeats, dissonance and things that seem challenging at first but like whisky, you come to appreciate it. But if it’s a playlist of bangers you’re looking for then all good!
Sikth - The Aura
I’m glad you guys gave Mastodon another chance. I think that’s the beauty of the metal genre. It is so expansive that you can get lost in all the various bands and genre and find something you like.
This is from Mastodon’s most proggy record, but I will always love their sludgier sound. The point is though, not everything has to be enjoyed by everyone, but it takes a true lover of music to give another band one more shot to impress. Great reaction guys!
Please react to Isis- “Not in Rivers, But in Drops”
The Pliable Foe or Way Through Woven Branches would also be good selections by Isis, IMO.
Brandon Wagoner Yeah those were good songs on Temporal. I wish I was able to find their split with The Melvins where those songs come from
Mastodon is a (or was at the time of this release at least) sludge metal band. The "muffled" sound is a production style associated with the genre.
Maybe so but their upload of the song still sounds like crap.
@@robkenyon5582- 🎯
"muddy" and "muffled" nah, that's the sound. Welcome to sludge metal, boys.
Hell yeah!!!
Cassettiquette How many different subgenres of metal are there?
Still less than the number of genders people think there are
Rasta Monk lol no shit. It's ridiculous how people identify themselves nowadays. Makes no sence. Those are the ones that just don't have an identity.
Austin, TX sludge is better
Took me a couple times of listening to this song to really get into it. Then it grabbed me. Kind of the point of Mastodon is that they're progressive. They change up what they're doing mid-song, and put together unorthodox song structure/transitions.
Pantera- Cemetary Gates
Death- Lack of Comprehension
I consider this band extreme prog metal. That break at the chorus is genius. I love this song.
I feel this is the best of prog at the moment. Ive looked for better prog metal i.e. baroness and sword....but nothing is better Mastodon. Hell, at this point I wouldnt even say they are prog. I just want someone else close to them. I have nothing. Any suggestions?
@@johnnylynx if you're still looking for 'better' prog, may I suggest Between the Buried and Me?
Jonathan Batten I like Mastodon the most, but there’s some good modern progressive metal that people would argue is better. Gojira and Opeth,in particular, stand out to me.
@@johnnylynx Sword isn't prog lol.
@@johnnylynx definitely a very different sound but have you tried TOOL?
Cemetary Gates - Pantera
The whole album is about the death of the drummer Brann Dailor’s sister, Skye.
Mastodon, I feel, are an album band, not singles. Pull the song out in isolation and it makes little sense. You’ll like Emperor of Sand, their latest LP. It’s not as proggy.
The sudden transitions are the best part! It's what makes the song unpredictable and energetic. It's sort of like the drop of the bass in electronic music. It's also as if you are gifted several songs interwoven into one. Anyway, you guys might enjoy The Art of Dying by Gojira. It's easily their best song and the drumming is absolutely mental. Thanks for another great video!
How are you listening to these songs? Watching UA-cam videos? Listen to them on Spotify bruh so you don’t have to worry about upload quality
Also there is an issue with the upload they used it skipped a line of the verse
ALICE IN CHAINS!!!
daniel mise they should do rooster!
Heather S yes! or Love Hate Love!
Ideally, something that shows off the dual melody of Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley.
Or grind or again
Anyone know how to hit like 10 times? Lol
Porcupine tree - Anesthesize
You HAVE TO CHECK IT OUT!!! You will love it. Mark my words.
Yes yes yes yes Steven Wilson is GOD
YES.
They'll appreciate the melody, technicality, and groove - but perhaps not the length. Although yes, I think it's a masterpiece.
I love anything Stevie Wilson does all of his work is absolutely mind blowing
The transitions are done perfectly. You're picking up on the subtleties that make Mastodon great so keep it up. Although the gramophone awards are gutless, there are reasons as to why they were awarded such.
"It's super abrupt" is precisely the style of Mastodon. That's one of the reasons their songs stand out..
I think these kind of progressive metal songs (also songs from Opeth and Tool for example) benefit a lot from repeat listens. I think that after listening a few times those transitions and melodies start to settle in your mind and they become way more satisfying. At least that is what I experienced when I started listening to progressive metal and now it is pretty much my favourite music genre.
Foetelaer haha yeah. First time I listened to lobster Eater I didn't know what the hell was happening but now I can listen to it and anticipate/ look forward to the funky riffs I love it. have to be sure not to burn yourself out on a song tho so you can gradually enjoy it instead of throwing it all at yourself so there's no more surprises hidden in the intracite layering. But that's not happening anytime soon because I've just started my porcupine tree discography adventure and I'm fucking loving Dead wing and in absentia.
that exactly what happen to me with dream theater
just love your honesty and the *unbiased* reactions. Really digging both of you, please continue the amazing work you're doing in bringing all kinds of people from different genres together. You really filled a void that's been on UA-cam for a long time, and I've been waiting for something like that. Stay awesome!
These guys may not be your cup of tea but this video was also my second chance for them and almost a year later they are my favorite band.
True artists that do it for the love of the art.
I feel the more you listen to them the more you like them
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Tool - Jambi, it's a great song with an awesome guitar solo
Angel Matarin Interesting, I feel that the guitar solo is the worst part of Jambi. The riff, groove and lyrics for the rest of the song are incredible though.
Angel Matarin love Jambi.. also 46&2
This song is amazing. Intricate, dark, sludgy -digging it! Mastodon was on my list of bands to check out. Now I'll definitely dive in and listen to more of their songs.
Is it time for cemetery gates by Pantera yet?
Hell yes, I was just thinking they should do a Pantera song.
@@jonkwape3097 They did Walk. I would like to see them do Cowboys from Hell or I'm Broken.
@@chrisserson4077 Definitely, I would like Cemetery Gates, being the most pop/ballad song of them. Though I'm more of a Great Southern Trendkill fan myself. Deep respect to you, Pantera for life.
It's always time for "Cemetery Gates" by Pantera.
Yazzz!!
Hey, I'm just glad you two tried a different song. Thanks for guys!

Mastondon: The Czar needs to be reacted to for sure !
You guys are the best, i was with you on mastodon, they where eh to me, then i saw this video and now im obsessed...all i can say is they are definitely a band that grows onto you
Some of these Mastodon comments have been cracking me up: "Guys! You NEED to do Blood and Thunder by Mastodon!! IT's the greatest song of all TIME!!" They don't like it: "Who recommended Blood and Thunder?! You need to check out OBLIVION! It is THE Mastodon song!!" They don't like it: "Oblivion was a poor choice, you REALLY need to check out Curl of the Burl!"
Guys... it's pretty clear they don't really care for this band. That shouldn't change your own opinion of a band in any way whatsoever, we all like different stuff, and no band is for everyone. That's totally okay. But you guys who are still pushing for Mastodon at this point are beating a dead horse; it makes more sense to start pushing for different bands so these dudes have opportunities to check out new stuff they could really love.
Mastadon is pretty gay.
They don't like the production, they keep wondering if the sound is muffled. I think this is just how it is produced. I appreciate Mastadon (especially the drummer) as great musicians but it is hard to pick out the instruments in most of their songs and I don't find them that creative. Whether it is on purpose or not, the sound is muffled.
Mitchell Roe I love Hearts Alive, to me thats their epic, atleast during their heavy sound years
I think almost everyone is wrong on this one. There's a lot of newer mastodon that they would probably like a lot more. Mastodon changed their songwriting style a good bit and have been focusing on the chorus a lot more lately. They'd like some newer songs I'm sure. Their old stuff just isn't accessible.
Mastodon is definitely an acquired taste. As much as I love them there were very few of their songs that I appreciated on first listen. Kudos for giving them another shot.
It's about time! Thank you!
They do concept albums. This is the first one on Crack the Skye and is about a guy doing astral projection, getting too close to the sun and losing the tether between his body and soul, drifting off to Oblivion.
This song is about the drummers sister the killed herself, and his guilt and mental agony. He attempted to dig up her grave hence him referencing his fingers being torn off. The worst part is that it's true...
Lack of Comprehension by Death!
Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize
Why do I love watching you guys reacting to some of my favorite music so much?? Hats off to you and all free thinkers!
You gotta develop a level of artistic schizophrenia to appreciate proggish transitioneering, but once you do it becomes the best part.
ROCCO Pazzo absolutely yes
Catdog amen!!
Pretty much exactly what I was thinking. This is actually the album that opened me up to prog. For a long time I didn’t get it, but once I did I couldn’t get enough.
I feel that way about Ricky Martin. What a master.
This is the correct comment. Mastodon is who got me into metal, but I didn't like them very much at first. Kept listening for some reason and they've developed into my favorite artist
Tool - Lateralus
Death-Crystal Mountain
hell yeah, you guys picked a good track to check out for em.
Mastodon is an absolutely phenomenal metal band! This album is very deep and is an homage to the drummer's sister who committed suicide, and a story of a child who is paraplegic who astral travels so deeply that he loses his "silver cord" that ties himself to his body. The boy in astral travel meets the spirit of Rasputin who helps the boy return to his body before his body dies... essentially. All of Mastodons albums are deep deep deep. One of my all time favorite bands!!!
Pink Floyd - Time
Nykut7 Everyone needs to listen to pink floyd at least once
or Money
Definitely, I’ve being delaying to ask for them, but Pink Floyd is an absolute mandatory requirement to anyone that likes music.
Id be surprised if they haven't heard it, but Wish You Were Here is such a classic song.
Considering how much George love drums, kinda surprised he didn't mention the drumming on this song. Brann Dailor is a great drummer.
Daniel Joy Literally said the exact same thing. Brann is a fucking legend
There’s not much of a groove to this song that’s probably why
I got to see them play this album in its entirety THIS YEAR. It was mind blowing. Mastodon just keeps getting better live (and in the studio).
love this stuff man. so interesting to see a fresh perspective on a genre that did not come naturally to me. but the culture invited me in more than any other style of music. subscribed.
A lot of prog has these abrupt changes. The reason for them is indeed to throw the listener off, and prog songs are not designed keeping groove in mind. Abrupt changes are difficult for the listener, and even more difficult to play - which prog is sometimes about - technicalities.
I however feel that you should give Opeth another chance - with Blackwater Park. Also, please do a reaction to La Dispute - one of my fav bands of all time!!
Someone else that loves La Dispute AND prog metal? What's good fam.
@@insidaero2530 Eyyy it's cool coming across fellow LD fans! I'm into all sorts of music haha. Actually LD's first album was just the right amount of prog to hook me up, and just the right amount of post-hardcore to bring me into the genre (which is my fav atm). So yeah... LD and prog go more hand in hand than you think!
@@soumyasarkar4459 You may be right! I don't see a lot of overlap between the communities though, which is unfortunate.
@@insidaero2530 Yeah that's because these genres are very poles apart when it comes to feeling - prog is a lot about technicality, funky song structures and musical choices, and emotion-wise not a great deal of focus; whereas LD is very much an emo band. So yeah, it is quite the leap to like both genres lel.
@@soumyasarkar4459 I actually think there's a lot more emotion within prog songs than people give it credit for.
"keep repeating the chorus, please!"
pop music in a nutshell
Caldera11 any music with a good chorus, really.
I love rock, metal, and prog but Mastodon needs some editing IMHO. I am with them on this & can't really get into it.
I absolutely love watching your unbiased reviews tho, guys. Your reactions usually mirror what's going on in my head....and alone at full volume in my ride! N
Flowing melodies on it - awesome song! Love songs have real changes in moods..
I really like Mastodon's "Ember City"
Tool - Vicarious
or schism, good for new tool listeners
I'd love to hear their thoughts on the lyrics of Vicarious since they convey the meaning of the song so powerfully.
i hope they watch the video too lol
That's wild I never heard Mastodon but I really like these two songs they have a big sound probably good real loud
They're awesome in a live setting. I've seen them twice in a mid-sized club setting and they were something else.
As TOOL said... "Finding beauty in the dissonance". I love mastodon and all those changes, may be abrupt but, man, that's the magic of them!!! BEAUTIFUL BAND!!!
Mastodon will grow on ya. As you guys come from growing up with hip hop, i understand how bands like Mastodon, Dream Theater, and Opeth just don't really click with you guys. I'm glad you at least gave them chances. Now please do Love? By Strapping Young Lad. Thanks!
DEATH - SPIRIT CRUSHER
Frogemoth SYMBOLIC
Frogemoth I agree. How these guys have reviewed so much metal yet haven't reached Death is astonishing.
Laren Grey I think they have to at least seen all the requests. I mean I leave one on pretty much every video of thiers I watch.
Fuck yes
Loved your impression of the chorus 😂 i think its definitely a grower, a few more listens I think you'd agree, but great review again
I feel like you guys would dig new Mastodon alot more, try Steambreather, Ancient Kingdom, or Show Yourself
Kyle M Please no more mundane music.
Toe to toe!
Ancient Kingdom!! 🤘
I agree. They need more “accessible Mastodon” something from the Hunter or Once More. This is too complex for them to appreciate I’m afraid.
Stephen Payne yup. They’d dig that👍
One thing to consider is that some songs really require more than one listen. That doesn't work for a reaction obviously, but if you knew the song really well the transitions wouldn't feel so abrupt. You would expect them and already know how to switch your groove while you head bang along to match the transitions.
I don't just mean this song. A lot of these complicated prog tunes are like this. Unlike most other genres these tracks are often designed complex enough to only truly be understood after many detailed listens. As a prog metal drummer myself, just something to consider.
I love watching you guys discover metal! Keep it up :) Your choice of hip hop is killer too. Have discovered several artists I really dig.
You probably have too much music to listen to already, but I think you guys would get lit on fire by Brooklyn based metal hip hop jazz fusion group "Candiria", their recent song "Blood". Some of the fattest grooves in all metal.
Agreed. Only with repeated listens does one truly appreciate these songs.
Most metal falls under this category. Metal is meant for repeated listens to truly absorb the music. Also, metal doesn't particularly lend itself well in single format.
Yeah, I feel like Candiria is a must for these guys.
Well said. Seems like the guys aren't quite used to prog rock or metal's time changes yet.
yup, the Progressive genre is not easy to get into and also needs and demands the attention to detail.
Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows
megahobo1234567 queens were great, I personally always liked Kyuss better though. Space Cadet was a stoner metal classic.
Conner Dean Yeah Kyuss were amazing, I’d love to see them react to Space Cadet as well!
This channel is amazing!
I love the sound of this song and glad they recorded it just the way it is
Death - Flesh and The Power it Holds
raisedfist77 god damn right!
YES!!
Mastodon is a very...niche band. They're one of the love it or hate it ones. Don't feel bad for not liking it guys. On another topic, it would be awesome to see you try Tool again. "Vicarious" or "Right in Two"
You get my vote for Right In Two.
I think I reacted pretty much the same way to this song when I heard it. One thing that comes with repeated listens of songs like these is getting used to the more abrupt transitions and finding a groove in them. Glad you guys gave this a second chance, hopefully you guys eventually do all the bands in the poll!
Greetings from your newish fan who had to make UA-cam account just because of your channel! Glad that you guys gave Mastodon second change after the not so mindblown reaction from Blood and thunder. For me the whole Crack the skye album and specially this song is one of the most important musical releases to this date. This album got me hooked to the band instantly and after that I began to somehow really enjoy they earlier stuff too (i had seen them twice live as Iron Maiden and Metallica support and heard their ealier record but still wasnt impressed). Theres lots of other bands that I have felt sameway on a first listen but later became fan hearing them in a different place and mindset of a life. No one should force himself or others to like any music but I guess our taste just evolves all the time. Strange thing this human mind.
Btw. I believe you havent still took a dig in the sub-culture of the allmighty stoner-rock/metal/doom. Its the fuzzy journey from raw inyourface guitar driven grooves and psychedelia into bone melting slow riffs bigger than Great wall of China. Can't really promise you like the stuff but would definately love to see your reactions for bands like Electric Wizard, Kyuss, Monolord, Truckfighters.
Comfortably Numb Live at Pulse - Pink Floyd! Such a good guitar solo
Evan West Possibly / probably the greatest guitar solo EVER.
Incredible song too.
BongEyedBastard definitely my favorite of all time!!
That solo is bliss, such an amazing song as well
Comfortably Numb, musical orgasm. Such a great tune.
Pantera - 5 minutes alone!!!
Great suggestion.
Or anything Pantera for that matter 🤘🤘🤘
Cemetery Gates would be a better choice
Cemetery Gates, please.
The reason I suggested 5 minutes alone was because of the breakdowns and the grooves. They'll love it. Cemetery Gates is a song style they've heard before.
Entombment of a machine. Job For A Cowboy!!!! Love to see your reaction!
I also struggled with this song in the beginning but, like many Mastodon songs, this is a song that grows on you. It gets better every time you listen.
The "abruptness" you guys are perceiving is the changing meter. This song transitions a lot between 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures which is not a common thing in popular music.
Yeah, these guys seem like they want to understand though, but sometimes they get hung up on "grooves" a little too much. I get it coming from a rap background and I think it's just going to take time. I'm sure the more they hear the more they'll start to understand.
Can't wait for you guys to react to Gojira - The Art of Dying
Some other suggestions I got for you is:
Twelve Foot Ninja- either One Hand Killing, Coming for You, or Sick
Karnivool- Themata
Steven Wilson- either The Raven that Refused to Sing, Drive Home, or Routine
Porcupine Tree- Anesthetize (it's a long one but well worth reacting to this absolute masterpiece)
Devin Townsend Project- Deadhead (live version at the Royal Albert Hall)
But does it D J E N T Porcupine tree or Steven Wilson YES!!!!!!
I LOVE THIS SONG SO SHOULD YOU! jk. Cool channel!! Looking forward to see more :)
This was the first song from Mastodon I heard and it locked this band in as one of my all time favorites.
symbolic by death
Architects: A match made in heaven. Or Architects: Doomsday
Brandon Mather yesssss
Doomsday is fucking dope
Brandon Mather Gone with the Wind and Doomsday back to back!
Nihilist
Brandon Mather I think they’d appreciate Doomsday!
I don't think a lot of people pay attention to the type of music you guys gravitate towards. You need to start with their more accessible tunes before you get into their progressive or really heavy stuff. Start with one of their new songs and go backwards through their catalogue ; you'll appreciate it more. Listen to "Show Yourself" or anything off of Emperor of Sand, honestly. You'll dig it. Its catchy, has some groove, and its up your alley.
Same thing with Soundgarden. The song that was chosen the other day was not a good one to start out with. Try "Outshined". Just do it. Trust me, you'll dig it.
Or "Dry Bone Valley" from The Hunter
Show Yourself is garbage
Yeah not Show Yourself. If George likes Brent's voice, they should check out Jaguar God from their newest album. One of my favorite Mastodon songs.
Jedisponge16 Mine, too. It shuts my brain down, which is the highest compliment I could possibly give a song.
Jaguar God is awesome. Maybe Toes-to-toes could be a nice shot too
Love this channel! I always get so excited when I get on UA-cam and there is a new video from you guys! I would love to hear you guys check out some Monuments anything on Amanuensis. I think you guys would dig their sound.
Mastodon's not everyone's cup of tea...I can respect the fact that not everybody can get into them. Personally, I love everything they have ever done! I especially love Leviathan and Blood Mountain... I guest it all boils down to the old saying: different strokes for different folks...Keep up the good work, guys!
Chuck Touchton Yeah, I'm a fan of Mastodon's catalog. They have a lot of elements at play while keeping their tone.
Mastodon are (were) a Sludge Metal band (with a very present prog influence). The muffled sound is part of the aesthetic. The abruptness is part of their style, very harsh and chaotic riffs and transitions. It's not an instant like, it's a grower for sure. With that said, Mastodon were on the for front of innovation, defying the types of mainstream sounds and song structure. Their first 4 albums are regarded as some of the most influential and best in metal of all time.
If you guys would like something more modern from them, that I'm pretty sure you'll like: Asleep in the Deep and Stargasm.
Discovered this band by complete chance on a South African airlines flight. This song was pivotal in my journey of harder subsection of rock and metal
System of a Down-Aerials
React to Pantera-CEMETERY GATES please!!!!! thumbs up if you want this next guys!
Classic Gaming21 Domination
Please..... this needs to happen!
their best song
The 7 minutes version
Amon Amarth - Twilight of the thundergod. If you want some epicness from Sweden
Mattias Sidlöv YES! I second this!
They would love the lyrics of Amon Amarth
Agree, they are very melodic too!!
Duuude, thank you for reminding me that this song exists!
Pantera - cemetery gates !!
Alice in Chains - Would?
Alice in chains bleed the freck
They just did it! It's on their Patreon.
This is exactly what I thought your reaction would be. I honestly think many of the recommendations you're getting are people giving you THEIR favorites, and not taking into account your other reactions to try to tailor something to what you guys tend to enjoy. Even though I did vote for Mastodon in the "2nd chance" poll on Twitter, that was because they were the best of four bad choices. If you'd chosen "Curl of the Burl" you would've enjoyed it more than this song. But metalheads have no ear for hooks sometimes, and they don't get why non-metalheads need them. So you were pushed toward oblivion (both figuratively and literally).
React to "Electric Worry" by Clutch. Pretty please.
Sacrilegium StormClad I agree, Ryan and George have a strong cross-section of what they enjoy and don’t enjoy, and they’re always open to giving different sounds a chance, so why would people keep suggesting music they repeatedly don’t seem to enjoy? I appreciate everyone having their favorites, but it’s not smart to “initiate” someone to a band on non-commercial songs, especially if that band already has numerous songs that have gotten regular radio/UA-cam/mtv rotation over the years and are proven winners.
my thoughts exactly. preach!
Oblivion has so many sexy parts though. Literally don't understand why these dudes fawned over the chorus but not the verse and pre-chorus. The vocal melodies are just as good
Motherload or Curl of the Burl would have been more up their ally for sure.
end bringer Well if these people actually gave a shit about spreading the appreciation of metal, not just shocking people with their "extreme" taste, maybe these guys could get into a lot more.
Funny to see how these guys acted when first watching Mastodon, then this reaction video, then eventually they fall in love with their sound. Mastodon rocks!
Two really openminded guys doing High level commentary on things they usually not get in to I for one LOVE it. Request from me an old guy from Sweden i nwould love to hear and see your Reactions to Riot "Outlaw".
I enjoy the abruptness. I think it has its place among some audiences. Kinda the same as how some people like jump scares in horror movies for the adrenaline. I feel like music is mostly about making you feel, and abrupt changes can make you feel a sharp change of perspective. A song about perseverance, for example, could make a lot of use out of making you feel sad then spontaneously upbeat to put you in the perspective of someone defying their sadness and committing to being happy despite it.
Crack the Skye is definitely my favorite album of theirs. Great CD to turn on and lay back and close your eyes as you listen to it. Not just background it while focusing on other things. Just do nothing and let it wrap around you, and it'll take you places.
Gojira - The Art of Dying!!
OR Global Warming, I think it will suits their taste better.
YES!
Been on about this for a months already
I love Art of Dying, but it's pretty heavy and not what these guys have come to expect from Gojira. They should try Silvera or Vacuity IMO
Global Warming would be dope.
Steve Kozlowski wat
I'd say it's the same amount of heavy as Heaviest Matter
