    The Queen is unamused because 1. she's heard all of them a million times before and 2. she's embarrassed that her sister's comic material consists of her Dad's old jokes.

      I honestly doubt that the news were broken down to the queen in detail by the prime minister's oral report irl - it would have been way to embarrassing for the both of them. but it works well in the dramatization, nice second-hand cringe for the audience.

      Apparently Queen Elizabeth had a great sense of humour but her position didn't allow her to show it in public. Princess Anne spoke of a gift her mother received in the 70s on a trip to Australia. It was a mechanical gloved hand on a lever that waved to and fro, for when her real hand got tired of waving. Some university students pushed through the crowd and presented it to the Queen in person, probably thinking they were being daring and cheeky but the Queen absolutely loved it and told them so. According to Anne, she loved it so much that it ended up on display at Balmoral and became a much loved family joke.

      @MrMman30 3 роки тому +9

      Simple.
      It's called repetition.
      The words are rehearsed so many times that they loose their humourous effect and become just lines to repeat.
      If done by two performers they can deliver it easily and flawlessly, it could also work in a small group, but becomes very difficult in groups of 10 people or more, because one could break and be reminded of the humour (or see a new angle of the joke) and laugh breaking character and causing a domino effect that will make everyone else around laugh.
      The problem with using this method in certain performances, such as in theater, is it is done in front of a first time audience and their reaction (the audience) could crack even the best seasoned performers (laughter is infectious after all).
      On TV or Film things are much easier although I believe the filming crew on set will be the main cause of concern not the performers and might have to witness many pretake rehearsals of the lines (but as mentioned above you can do it in small groups so a small filming crew filming two people is ideal).
      This is how I'd do it if I was the director.
      The real conversation with Queen Elizabeth was probably both embarrassing and infuriating so it is easy to imagine how the conversation went in real life (the last line was a direct insult to the person of the Queen herself).

    I have heard that it is a wildly held belief that actors with a comedy background seem to quite easily turn there hand to drama. Olivia Colman is another very strong argument for that and deserves all the recognition and praise that she has received.
