Use a Shock Leader and CATCH MORE FISH **Three Huge Benefits**

  • Do I need a shock leader? In my opinion a Shock Leader is needed when using a braided main line. A shock leader will help you catch more fish surf fishing, pier fishing, or even fishing from a boat. I setup some line comparison tests to show the benefits of using a shock leader when using a braided main line.
    Here is some extra info about how long and what pound test to use:
    If you are using a shock leader to throw heavier weights than your mainline can handle the shock leader will need to wrap around your reels spool at least 5 to 10 times. But If your mainline can handle the weights that you are throwing you do not have to wrap the shock leader around the spool of your reel if you do not want to. I personally only use 6 to 8 feet of shock leader when surf fishing so when I cast the shock leader is not coming off of my spool. I do this to keep casting distance at a maximum. Deciding what pound test to use for a shock leader really just depends on what you are doing and personal preference. I personally use 20lb shock leader when surf fishing for Pompano because I can throw a 4oz weight all day long without breaking off. If using cut bait I will use 40lb or higher. The 10 pounds of line per ounce of weight rule is a poor guide to go by in my opinion. I suggest using the lightest pound test you can get away with. Good luck!

    I have spent several hours today researching shock leaders, and this video is so much more informative than anything else I have come across. The demonstrations were really well thought out and executed. I now feel very convinced that I should incorporate a shock leader, and much more confident in the material and test I plan to use. Thanks for the great video, and keep doing your thing!

    Great video. I found out the hard way a couple years back fishing for sheaphead. Whatever i hooked onto is still a mystery. I had braid directly to a double rig, no shock leader. Whatever I hooked ran off 1/4 of the spool, there was no stopping it. Once it went around a broken bridge piling it was game over. Lesson learned. I'm so psyched for my OBX trip where I've caught big fish from the surf before but never used a shock leader. It makes sense because a few years back I had 50 pound braid tied to a 40 pound floro leader. I ended up getting a leader touch on a estimated 300 pound bulkshark. The fight was 45 minutes . Without that leader it would have probably been game over.

    Brother this blows my mind. With all of my years of tournament fishing and running my own guide business in the past. I used braided line pretty much exclusively. This has definitely changed how I will be rigging up no matter what,how,or where I will be fishing from now on. In my opinion every fisherman needs to see this video. 😎🇺🇸🤠🇺🇸

    You forgot a big benefit of a longer shock leader when surf casting … the mono won’t cut through your finger when pitching a 3oz or heavier weight.
    Nice video, thank you.

    Wow. I am just getting into beach/shore fishing and have been watching lots of videos to learn over the last couple of weeks. I thought I kept hearing that 1 of the 2 main reasons for braided over mono was for abrasion resistance. Your tests were very eye-opening. I will for sure be including Shock Leaders on my rigs. Thanks

    Justin, thanks for this informative video. I'm a big fan of your channel. All the line abrasion and stretch tests you performed were very revealing and clearly prove the lack of abrasion resistance (zero) with braid. I am usually targeting whiting, pompano, black and red drum, primarily in the Atlantic, along the East Central Florida coastline. I have recently re-lined all of my surf fishing rigs. On each of my 4 spinning rigs I have 20 lb. braid tied to a couple of rod-lengths of 20 lb. fluorocarbon shock leader. I used an FG knot for line-to-line connection on those. Admittedly, those were tough to tie given the small mono diameter. (Still working on perfecting that one.) I have one conventional casting reel rigged with 20 lb. mono with a 40 lb. fluoro shock leader, using a double uni knot for my line-to-line connection. My question is this: should I increase the size of fluoro shock leaders on the spinning rigs to 40 lb. test? I don't often have to cast any more than 4 oz. but occasionally 5 oz.

    • @JustinReedFishing
      @JustinReedFishing  5 місяців тому

      Happy you enjoyed the tests! I personally tie 20lb braid to 20lb shock leaders here for my pompano setups and have never had an issue throwing 4oz weights. I can't say weather it would work for 5oz though cause I never throw 5s. It can't hurt to step up the shock leader if it gives you more confidence with your casts. I'd probably bump them up to 30lb if I were throwing 5s. Good luck out there Bruce!

    Floro for rigs. Mono for shock leader.
    I use mortician rigs. I’ve tried making the rig and shock leader trunk line the same piece out of mono.
    But the branch lines, which have to be floro, cut through the mono no matter how thick.
    Reckon floro needs to be with floro.

    I grew up fishing Hatteras. Much heavier surf and sand abrasion. Always used 40# Ande mono for shock with 17 or 20# mono main for big fish. Might would at least go 30# for braid shock.
    More key points. Make the shock leader long enough to wrap on spool several times and have enough for your drop length. Really a big deal with conventional reels. A great relief on the finger with spinners with braid and takes the pressure off the knot when casting on both. Last thing i will mention is safety. No big deal lobbing 2-3 ounces 15-50 yards out but if you are reaching for the 2nd bar mono leader will give more stretch on the cast and less likely to break on someone’s head down the beach.

    I always use mono shock leader for casting lead and bait, 10# for every 1 oz of weight. Lately I have gone over to using tapered mono leader , 15# tapers up to 70#. My main line is 15# braid or 20# braid.

    Red is the first color to fade after 10 feet of water so they say but we run shock leaders in nc where the water isnt as clear but it helps a lot with braking off on both casts and fighting fish.

    I have always used monofilament, not because I knew it was a good idea but because I had issues keeping fish buttoned when direct to braided line. When I started tying braided to monofilament my hooks stayed attached and fish remained hooked.
    As of late the brand of line has not come in to play, since supply of options has directly affected what can be bought.
    When I could be picky I leaned towards Suffix or Stern now I take what I can get my hands on.

      Great to hear that your experience with a shock leader has also made a difference to keep fish from popping off. Thanks for watching. Yes sadly supply has made an impact on what fishing tackle is available. I also use mono lines.

    Should the length of the shock leader be relative to the length of your rod? Or is it specific to the bait/rig/lure?

    Justin, what pound test shock leader do you recommend for, say, a 3 oz weight? I think I remember seeing that 60 lb. would be desirable, or 40 lb for a 2 oz weight, but I’m an oldish fart and my memory isn’t what it used to be. 😂

    • @JustinReedFishing
      @JustinReedFishing  11 місяців тому +1

      The rule of thumb is 10lb per ounce of weight. But I've thrown 4oz using 20lb shock leader without issues. I'd say a good middle ground would be 30lb for the shock leader. I use 20 when Pompano fishing to keep my tackle less visible.

    Do you need a shock leader with 15lb monofilament main line ???

    • @JustinReedFishing
      @JustinReedFishing  27 днів тому

      Only would help if you plan on throwing heavier weights that would break the 15lb mainline. People who run mono will put on heavier pound test shock leader to throw heavy weights.
