Italy and the illegal red coral trade | DW Documentary

- Red coral is as valuable as it is beautiful. Prices are soaring, and while that's good news for the legal red coral trade, the illegal trade is also cashing in. Red coral smuggling is booming, and nature is paying the price.
Red coral is a sought-after raw material for southern Italy's traditional jewellers. For centuries, the spectacular local 'coral riviera' has played an important role in the Mediterranean region - for the local economy and also for the ecosystem. But now it's not only under threat from climate change, poachers and criminal networks are making a fortune from the illegal red coral trade. A report by Jan-Philipp Scholz.

Eventhough we just keep on growing in numbers.
8.000.000.000 this year.
Pure greed!
Wow. I just realized that a hat pin that I inherited thirty years ago must be made of red coral! I had no idea what it was made of, just that it was an unusual shape and color. She traveled to Italy several times in the 60’s, so it makes sense now.
The Tunisian city, Tabarca, was a Genovese city whose economy was almost completely based on coral trade. The Genovese people left in 1742 and permanently moved to Carloforte in Southern Sardinia and Nueva Tabarca off the coast of Valencia!
Really?
@@mihiec Yeah, there's still Genovese ruins in the city to this day, near the coast! And those Genovese who lived for two centuries in Tabarca developed their own dialect of Genovese, losing the words for ice and snow for example. It's an interesting story!
A very good documentary on Coral trade by DW 👍.
It was a wonderful documentary coverage on coral trade . Shared by excellent DW documentary channel ... good luck and best wishes for the DW documentary channel.
All I have got to say is - why???
Human vanity knows no limits.
Yeah, I hear you. And when the coral is gone the rest of the ocean and humanity is GONE.
Oceans and seas are dying slowly with the Mediterranean leading the way. Rising water temp doesn't help either.
Here in Eat Africa we respect the endangerment of the elephant by not designing our jewelry or anything else with ivory. It appears that European and North African designers are irresponsibly using red coral without regard to its precarious situation. Very nasty!
true
No you guys don't there's poachers all over east Africa. Poaching animals for their Ivory so stop lying saying all your people respect the endangered species act and the animals on it!
We are really fucking this planet
Amazing to know red coral is not only precious in Japan, but also in the Mediterranean. Note: red coral is cut, polished, and then sculpted into figurines, especially in Okinawa, Japan.
then polished after the sculpting
It feels great to turn a rock in form of tree branches into beautiful shapes and jewellery.
Very informative documentary 👍. I wasen't aware of red coral trade uptil now.
Without our demand there'd be no supply..
i dont understand why 'industries' like this have to destroy wildlife when they could just grow/farm it themselves...........................................................................
They would have to wait 10s of years for these to grow so they take the ready ones instead.
@@psytcp That's what happens with different types of wood.
It doesn't count if it's easy to get. It has to be reserved for the rich, has to be rare, and there has to be suffering. That is what makes something precious.
Wasn’t the ivory trade banned already? How is this any different?
The older I get the more I realize there are only so many things I can get bothered and angry about. the illegal coral trade isn't one
Crisp and clear info
Here is my solution: if somebody wants red coral, they have to come to the meditereanian and dive themselves or pay someone to dive for them. They can only take as much as they have payed and are allowed, similar to hunting tags. Coral are animals, so why not treat it this way?
Some is being smuggled from the East African coastal region of MALINDI and Watamu Kenya
In India Coral are used as Astrological purpose such as planet Mars represent by Coral. Wearing coral can increase your blood flow, reduce stress, increase stamina and aggression and last give you brevity. But all things work if you have authentic coral which match your astro sign. I am also compatible with Coral and Mars.
Interesante.. Y cómo saber si el coral coincide con mi signo astrologico?

"We fight every day with illegal trades..with the help of Camorra we are able to do so".
If you think that regulation will help, remember DW documentaries did a docu about palm oil and how they used slavery and still actually
In indonesia we call marjan for red coral jewelry

Of all the parasites on the land and under the sea humans are the very worst
I’m confused 😮
At the coral greedy humans are short sighted
We Tibet people pay lot of money to buy coral 😢😢😢
Stick to fossilised coral instead people
When they decided to use beavers for hats and coats they didn't realize the damage that they were doing to the environment
@0:23 Can you snort it? Then NO
Wwoww I didn't know this Topic something interesting I admit ♥️♥️♥️♥️.
What's the difference between legal and illegal coral harvesting? Why not make it all illegal.
If the government gets their cut, anything is legal..
Ban it, like Ivory…
"On this occasion, they find no smuggled goods..." Uh huh, right. And I have a bridge to sell you. This DW Documentary - sigh...what a load. I'm sure the effort was made but they see you coming.
Why do you never talk about German problems instead of being so obsessed about Italy? Like all the dirty money Deutsche bank cleans every year: go ask informations about this to german government and see if they want to answer your questions... Italy is the 3rd safest country in the world this year after Norway and Switzerland, why don’t you talk about this?
Why you are so mad?
Go eat pasta man.
😲😲
❤❤❤
All because of money.
Never heard of this, never heard of coral jewelry
That coral jewellery looks rubbish can't believe people pay for that garbage.

Sir please give me a red coral
No matter what DW are documenting on, they always without a doubt manage to slip in the words- Climate change' and global warming' it is bizzare.
One day soon - you will - or your descendants will freeze or burn to death.
Yeah - it's truly bizarre that catastrophic climate change and the warming of the world's oceans are happening - and DW Documentary reports on it. Crazy! 🤔
They did not slip in either one of the two in this documentary..
