This is very sad for Puyi because Reginald Johnston was the closest thing he had to a father figure... while Wang Wenchao (Armo) was his surrogate mother.
You can tell the two characters in the car was very restrained. Not much facial expressions but lots of emotional turmoil inside. You can just hear puyi's trembling voice on farewell mr johnston. Then the film tried to complete the sense of loss and sadness with two waves, one with Auld Lang Syne and the second with the associate shouting goodbye, we'll never forget you. To puyi, Mr. Johnston is the gateway to a bigger world, the real world that he never has a chance to experience. Now he is losing his mentor, one of the few persons that cares about him. For Mr. Johnson, although his role was completely politically driven at first, during his engagement, he did develop empathy for Puyi. Brilliant acting and staging. One detail you noticed is Johnston takes a deep breath and the word "AS" was released at the top of his breath. It means he needs a lot of "support" to utter those words in this emotional situation. Great acting by Peter O'Toole. what a master! if he didn't take that breath it wouldn't have been convincing. and that handshake and how puyi started to crack and johnston nearly lost it. that's where it made me cry even harder. I cried since Johnston said As we said hello. The two men tried to normalise it with a forced smile.
Johnson was the closest thing Puyi had to a father in this. Whatever Puyi does later on, you do have to feel empathy for what he went through, losing all he had in such a short time.
This is such a good movie with such a good storyline about how Pu Yi suffered during his life. This was absolutely my most favorite drama movie in my life.
Every time I am in the city centre I go to the train station and shout " GOOD BYE MR JOHNSTON! WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU MR JOHNSTONE! GOOD BYE, GOOD BYE!" at random departures.
Such a beautiful film, the only one of three films to make me cry, I don't weep much at movies only a certain three Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, The Last Emperor and The Empire of the sun. All the cast were sublime, Sir Peter o'toole, was marvellous in this as my opinion, he was the finest actor to ever live after Sir Ralph Richardson and Sir Alec Guinness
Henry Pu Yi became a close friend with Reginald Johnson for the rest of his life. Its very extremely sad for Henry Pu Yi to become the last emperor of China at the wrong time. When the Japanese army took over China and Manchuria he became a puppet emperor for the Japanese. He was the emperor of Manchukuo until he was arrested by Soviet paratroopers in 1945. Henry Pu Yi died in 1967 as a gardener.
Peter O'Toole's best part in tis movie - when he heard the music he must have known the music is meant for him n he paused n dare not turn around (he is afraid he will lose it n cry) n quickly make his move to exit.
So sad i hewrd he died i liked him in this movie but he mostly enjoyed playin in that one movie that he loved that he's mostly remembered as arabian or some his ashes were scattered in Ireland R.I.P Peter
Auld Lang Syne is a Scottish song about cherishing the past and looking forward to the future. An interesting historical fact: when the Protestant Reformation of the 1500s had reached Scotland in 1560 and the Scots rejected the Catholic Church in favor of Presbyterianism, they decided that Christmas was a "Catholic holiday" and banned the celebration of Christmas for nearly 400 years. Because of this, the western New Years celebration, which takes place one week after Christmas, became a much more important holiday in Scotland than anywhere else in Europe. The Scottish established a tradition of singing Auld Lang Syne on New Years Eve and as they emigrated to other countries like the United States of America and Australia, the Scottish brought their tradition with them. That is why it is customary to sing Auld Lang Syne on New Years Eve throughout the English speaking world, including America.
No one can say "Your Majesty" as Peter O'Toole can.

I agree! I probably love this scene even more than the final cricket scene.
the detail that he put on his glasses is also insane

Too cute, I am at a small cafe by myself now and this comment makes me smile

If Puyi’s tutor never leave China and stay with Puyi. Would Puyi still be Manchuko’s emperor?
No. Manchuko is imperial Japan's vassal state, which was doom to fail after Pearl Harbor.
Mr. Johnston said Hello! His Majesty said Goodbye! Handshakes! Remember!
This is really a heartbreaking scene. 😢 I really wish puyi met him in the afterlife and continues to play tennis.😢
I'm sad to say good-bye with my important firend.

So sad..

It's sad how the imperial dynasty of china came to an end.
Not really if you look at the conditions normal people had to live with! The only regrettable thing is the regime that followed!

Puyi was a sadist, this film dishonors his victims.
Puyi was a sad little man that wanted to become emperor again. He was a puppet, nothing more.
