Bro, your chest/traps/delts are dialed in. Looking huge my guy. Also, great video!
You should cover ray j's speedrun of kim kardashian😂
I participated in Quake speedrunning fairly early on (I am in the end credits on Scourge Done Slick), but I was TERRIBLE at it. Every time I submitted a new record, Nolan Pflug, Gunnar Andre Mo, or Stefan Schwoon would come along and absolutely demolish my time. They were all so massively talented!
Same here. But with Mario Kart Wii. Not speedrunning but world records. I remember when the Grumble Volcano Ultra Shortcut was relatively new and I tried it and got the world record… for around an hour or so. The next morning, it was taken.
@@beatziegraham6928 Even if it was brief, holding a world record on Mario Kart is an amazing gaming achievement. Congrats bro : )

That run from Peter is absolutely insane, for a time to hold for that long it has to be pretty special. The fact he also had to deal with the relatively primitive technology and mindsets towards speedrunning and still managed to produce a run that is near-perfect is a testament to his skill. Congrats to Muty for beating it, clearly it took a lot of hard work. Loved the video Karl, would be very interested in seeing more Quake runs.
Didn't know Hungarians were so skilled at Quake
As said late in the video, the guy would have been using a ball-mouse, and one that probably weighed at least 1/3 of a pound.
Honestly knowing a little bit about how technical Quake is in its entirety to play on a high level the run is absolutely insane. Especially for 20 years back. Quake pro players are crazy good. Even "washed up" pros from back then still take a dump on "normal" people joining the game nowadays intending to climb the ranks. You have to put a lot of hours in just to beat pro players from then let alone current pro players.
I played the hell out of Quake back in the day. It wasn't until the end of the video, when you pointed out he probably set his record with a ball mouse that it really hit home for me. How much better our hardware is now, how much harder it would have been to set a record with such longevity in an era when no one was chasing perfection the way they are now. Peter was truly ahead of his time.
Insane
Yeah, "Between Logan and me Canadians are basically the most violent people on the planet." I may be misremembering the exact line, but still annoyed whenever I'm reminded of what Disney cost us.
no shit, almost certainly a wired ball mouse, to boot!
Quake was a turning point in how a lot of the gaming community interacted with competitive games. I remember fora with long threads just dissecting the code, discussing the math, and posting detailed instruction on how exploit the various quarks of the engine.
If you looked at QDM, TF1, rocket arena, etc. what was happening there was a whole different world from the rest of video games. It was the genesis point for FPS e-sports.
Which unironically has become the start of the decline of competitive fps gaming.
@@bbbbbbb51 It's a gaming industry problem in general.
When you design a game for competitive instead of letting it just develop around a game you made to be fun, you lose the heart.
Also Machinima.
Its a bit sad that it was the genesis but also the peak of fps esports, considering how shit the modern fps like call of duty and overwatch are, and how tired counterstrike has become
Always love the Quake and Doom videos
There really is something special about seeing the old guard with their utterly dominant runs years before other communities got truly serious about this stuff
golly, the person named quake loves quake runs, huh? what a shock :p
I hope more people get into Quake Champions and get that game to be bigger. It's already one of the hardest games to get good at professional level. It exceeds csgo and probably tied with Dota or starcraft
I was friend with one of the best Quake 3 players in the world back in the early 2000... They were another breed of gamers...
@Stay EZ My Friends Sure or many people it wss better, but alot of pro playerd jumped over to quake champions because of bigger prize money
@Stay EZ My Friends it's still fun to play tho!
That early video is so good you'd swear it was TAS'd. I'm certainly not trying to imply that I think it IS, not with just how many hours he was putting into those levels, but that's how clean it looks with some of those amazing shots. And the amazing reaction time to see "ok, the grenade is there, the setup is complete..." and STILL having to maneuver to the vore missiles to hit at the right time, WHILE killing enemies. It's obscene. The man was a legend indeed.
Agreed!
Did they have TAS back then?

@@embermist3910 that's awesome. Even though listed 5. Great comment

You gotta have balls to execute that insane record with a ball mouse.
One might be tempted to add a new catagory to speed runs like "OG Setup" where you have to use the same PC and mouse/KB that the record holder used. Would be interesting to see what, if any, difference a ball mouse vs. an optical mouse are.
@@forthemanynotthefew5243 I can tell you personally, a ball mouse gathers dust and dirt in the wheels that move the mouse (it can be a lot, think of someone who has not cleaned under their nails for 3 days, what you may see under their nail, is exactly what you can find rolled around the mouse wheels), also the mouse ball itself. A user would have to open the mouse and use an object to clean said wheels and ball, close back the mouse and then begin to use. The buttons will more or less stay the same.
@@forthemanynotthefew5243 Period correct run - with a Pentium 233, 32MB RAM, 3DFX Voodoo 1, a ball mouse, and GLQuake. That would be fun!
I have a vague memory of getting Unreal Tournament 1999 on release (I'd already played Unreal) and it being the first time I used an optical MS IntelliMouse. Karl says that Horvath got his record in 2000. So I think it's possible he was using an optical mouse. I wonder if Horvath is aware that his record has been broken, or even knows it stood so long.
@@chesterbowles7950 I love how you wrote this comment as if this were a description of something the ancient Egyptian peoples had to do. Geez I feel old as hell.
As a 22 year old born in 2000 that record is almost cosmically horrific in nature. To think someone set it before I even had sentience and that it still stood until now is just absolutely insane to me

Frickin amazing. Yes, please more old school quake, doom, golden eye, and perfect dark. The passion just pours out of you when you talk about these things and its intoxicating. I've never speed run a game in my life but I'm an expert now just from watching you talk about it. Excellent stuff, my dude. You're a true legend. Thank you.
Yes, more Quake videos! Quake speedrunning is legendary. Arguably even more so than Doom. I remember watching speedrunning demos like QDQ as far back as 1997. The tricks they were doing even back then were crazy even by today's standards. Those guys movement and skills were absolute bonkers.
always love hearing about quake. this generation either doesn't know or doesn't care but quake is probably one of the, if not the most important game in modern gaming. quake gave birth to modern esports, modern online multiplayer and modern speedrunning. it directly influenced games that went on to change the face of gaming like half life and halo. hell, the idtech engine is so legendary its still being used today, most notably in COD modern warfare 2022 which uses the IW engine which is based off of the idtech 3 engine.
I love Quake, it has something on its mechanics that is so unique, I think it's the physics of acceleration. This brings good memories for this 40 years old here. I remember all these levels very well.
Soon to join the 4 decade club too. Played thousands of hours of Quake online from dialup to high speed.
Something to note that is a bit understated in the video is that Quake really founded speedrunning in the modern sense. AFAIK it was the only truly competitive speedrunning community at the time and had a sizable community around it publishing videos that were shared on physical media (pre-UA-cam). As Karl mentions, Speed Demos Archive was originally a Quake speedrunning site. My friends and I played a ton of competitive Quake back then (no speedrunning though) and the QDQ team were legends.
It so insane that records from so long ago even still exist! The fact someone could hold a record for THAT long is a testament to just how skilled people can get when they have the time and talent to invest, especially now that speedrunning is getting more and more popular and competition is getting more and more heated. I love it! Major props to Muty and Peter!
what's amazing to me is that it was played on a low framerate screen, with a ball mouse. The guy was just dedicated, he was a pioneer without even knowing it.

I love these quake videos. The slowmo of those 2000 demos really highlights how subtle that run was. Peter Horvath is a legend
I think what makes Karl's videos so compelling is his *reverence* for the practice of speedrunning. The patience, persistence, and absolute mastery it takes to eke out a record these days is insane.
He does make a point of trying his hand at the games he covers, plus he's an insanely skilled Goldeneye player himself.
Also one of the reasons he hates speedrun cheaters so much.
The cheaters are always people who are already crazy good, but don't have the patience and persistence to put in the hours to actually get records.
Muty is one of the most impressive speedrunners I've ever seen, seriously insanely talented. More Quake is always welcome!
that is true
Not even a top 1 exodus from the earth speedrunner.
@@mooncalf_4534 I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed he was recently in Cr1tikal's speedrun competition
I love to see you covering Quake and speaking about its significance in speed running history. Quake Done Quick was the first time I was ever in awe of speed runs. Speed running is a big part of Quake's history, and Quake is a big part of speed running's history. Thanks for covering this milestone!
This channel is such a gem. And when it is showing Quake you know you are in for something great
For someone to have that level of dedication and understanding of a game, to come up with strats and ideas that are so ahead of their time, is truly something special. Also to have your run be that optimized that many years ago and to stand as #1 for so many years too, is even more unheard of. This is super impressive and really goes to show how amazing speedrunners can be. Congratulations on the new record Muty! It's definitely well deserved!
Yeah Marvel Heroes Omega made me fall in love with Doreen Green, when I'd first heard of her I thought she was just another joke character like Howard the Duck so wasn't actually expecting a decent hero, so being proven wrong and have a delightful character to play with was unreal.
I first came across Peter Horvath from his insane NM-Speed record on E4M3 (a time of 0:33, which absolutely destroyed the previous record of 0:37) for utilising a Grenade/Spawn jump to cross a large chasm. At first I wondered what was special about E4M2 until you mentioned the narrow window by the fake water pool to hit the Ogre, and the double Vore pod damage boost that you can't actually see from first-person perspective. Peter Horvath was in a league of his own.
2:42 look at Karl smashing 4 of the longest standing records in golden eye, beast.
Good point on ball mice, I would imagine back in the early 2000's these folk would be already switching to optical mice. I remember the Intellimouse Explorer being the holy grail for quakers, it was also the first mouse I ever saw that had extra side buttons. The switch from ball to optical was insane.
On the plus side: they had superior CRT monitors with their low response times.
@@jamesphillips2285 Perhaps a plus when the flat-screen monitors fist came - they where worthless. A modern monitor today beats CRT in every aspect. I've been following the Quake Champions Pro-league now a couple of seasons and I was thinking about how they can have so high accuracy with rail and shaft. Rail is now at 50-70% and shaft is at 50-60%. The best shafters in the world in Quake never got over 30-35%...the best railers in the world never got over 50%. I realized it has to do with the better hardware and one of the strongest hardwares in this is the monitors at 300Hz refreshrate. For these reasons, and this is just my opinion, I value the time of 1:17 in year 2000 as a better performance than 1:16 in year 2023.
I have to search the rearmost part of my mind to remember what kind of equipment this is. It's been a while since I touched any of those things.
@@jamesphillips2285 For a while that may have been true but there isn't really any grounds to say they were superior in any aspect for years now. Where a CRT is superior is when a game was designed to be displayed on a CRT and looks wrong on a modern display. This is an aesthetic thing not a pragmatic one.
Excellent in-depth review Karl, much appreciated.

Love watching Muty and his HL and Quake speedruns. A real champion.
I was shocked to see the name show up when watching the video, had to pause to see if I was watching the right video. I watched a bunch of Muty HL1 runs and completely forgot he did quake as well, crazy to see it was him who broke this record!
So glad this popped in my recommended videos. I remember when this demo was made: "jaw-dropping" is one term to describe it. But then again, Peter did that several times, he came up with new routes and tweaks and even though he never seemed to be the fastest when it came to just movement, when it involved killing monsters and making tricks work (like ogre GJs and vore-ball jumps), he was an absolute monster! It would almost give the impression that he was just going throught the level randomly throwing nails and grenades and whatnot and they were all landing where they were supossed to land, and the timing of his shots/turns/jumps was always so incredibly perfect it made you think only a mad man would attempt to beat one of his records (unless a completeley new route was found). From the times I spoke to him I realized he always thought "outside the box" and was really good at finding new routes and tricks, stuff I wouldn't have imagined if nobody told me about. I love these videos, they bring back great memories. Awesome job and explanation!
Yes, we want more Quake 1 videos. This was amazing
Every time i watch a karl jobst video i get excited for the future and then history of speedrunning. These videos will one day be a perfect documentary for 100-200 year old speedruns. Its fascinating and we are just at the beginning of it. Wait until all elderly people are the grandchildren of our children!!!
If we all make it that far with how this world is going
Why doesn't anyone talks about Karls mixing skills? It seriously always sounds so nice and crisp
I was a pro Clan Arena player back then and was on IRC with Fatality and all the big quake clans. The use of rocket jumps with masterful use of angles made it just as insane as some of these speed runners. Quake also had Team Fortress which was the first class based FPS mod i believe. Quake was such an amazing community at it's height.
Incredible! Old runs of 20+ years being defeated gives me both "Aww, sad it had to be broken, as it became a legend!" and "Wow, such old historical happening being defeated! I love seeing some movement in ancient gaming!" at the same time!

Dear Karl, I would absolutely love to get more Quake videos. I was back then not into speed running, but into death matches over LAN. Until this day, I know every millimeter in DM4/DM6, and it was normal back then to use Rocket Jumps (I think it invented it) and Grenade Jumps to have some advantages.
Quake also made me learn more about IT because we had to start hacking back then (some Novel servers, where surveillance software was loaded to keep us away from playing) to be able to avoid the censorship of the school - well, I'm for 20 years now I'm an IT professional also because of this :) I know therefore many other people back from that time, who became IT professionals because of Quake and everything it included (modding, scripting etc.).
I know Quake (1 of course) doesn't mean that much for many of the younger people of today, but for us, it was HUGE and until this day, I'm always enjoying when I see very skilled players like you discuss (because I really know how hard some things are).
Quake movement is special. The bunnyhopping, the airstrafing, the blast jumping. And the speedruns is not all about glitches you don't understand or offmapping or looking down into the ground so you can't see anything. They basically play like we played back then, just a lot better.
Despite this, we all know that all the REAL records have been set by Rod Todgers and Milly Bitchell.
