I'm sure I won't be the only one saying this, but it's funny you mention those Makuta vibes since, functionally, that IS Makuta standing (however wobbly) on your desk. There are many Maxilos robots, but the one we meet in 2007's story is possessed by Makuta's disembodied spirit at the time. They just didn't CALL the set Makuta, to avoid spoiling the twist and leave the door open for you to pretend this is one of the other, non-Makuta Maxiloses. Bionicle is a trip, man.
I always found it funny when Maxilos(Makuta) just decided to out himself as Makuta in front of the Baraki and Pridak was basically either in disbelief or abject fear. It's been a while so I don't really remember the exact reaction he had.
I'm 22 and I have the few bionicles I've been able to assemble on display. I've either had to completely buy new ones and scrap the replaced for parts. The new ones I bought like Maxilos and Spinax I remembered really wanting back in '07 but when I just recently got it... The detailing on the upper body is great (other than the dreaded socket cracks but that comes with age IG) but the legs, particularly the thights, are really open and barebones, even Hydraxon with similar thigh assembly did it better. The socket joints for the legs may also just be old, but they were really loose and left much to be desired in holding him without anythjng falling or dripping. Other than that... Yeah, I agree, real worthy sophomore Makuta model. Also we really were deprived of more bionicles like Spinax. I guess you could count the visorak as being similar, but we really needed more animal bionicles, if not animal Lego sets that used Bionicle-reminicent parts.
well... I consider this as the best BIONICLE set. Here there is already another level of detail, color and mechanics... I consider it to be at the level of Brutaka! Not to mention the other giant ship sets.
Objectively speaking, it is certainly one of the best, in terms of articulation and build. As for me, this is my #1 favorite Bionicle set. I’ll glad I bought it some years ago, before these absolutely crazy and unnecessary price hikes

My absolute favourite is Karzahni because of his look and bulkiness and all the cool pieces, and it's a great big titan in green. I loved Karzahni in the books, and I was kind of disappointed to find out his original look wasn't the set look, I think the set look really captured his creepiness and power in a more eldritch way. I used to care less about all the extra gubbins we get but it's a pretty nice parts pack for that trap and the matoran.
I also missed out on Maxilos when I was a kid. Seeing the 07 titans in the catalogue really blew me away. Certainly lives up to the hype, especially the torso which is god-tier.
Maxilos is that colour, because Makuta does possess him! You can see the vibes especially in the 'Mahri Nui' commercial. IMO this is the best bionicle set we ever got, just a dope looking 'sentinel' kinda character. I think his weapon is also sorely underrated. It has to be one of the coolest weapons a titan/ character has ever had, very slick. Plus, he's got claws! He was robbed of a 9.3 imo.
He's got everything going for him, but putting him in the 9.0 range as a model that's just too tough to pose and has some stability issues felt like a no-no for me. Will likely never be topped as the best set in the 8.0-8.9 range
Another absolutely amazing titan set from the greatest year of bionicle. I love his cordak launcher on his back. Also the reveal of how Makuta was still alive through maxilos and how he was torturing poor Matoro and manipulating the Toa. What else can I say this guy is just amazing
Hands down my favorite set ever. It would already be up there, between the hips, the shoulders, the clever use of armor pieces and the awesome lore, but then after all that you get this awesome wolf dog thing? 11 year old me was over the moon.
Its incredible that you didnt mention the amount of articulation and posability this set has, i think that this set should at least be a 9.5 because of that, NECK, SHOULDERS AND WEIST articulation, thats not something that you will ever get in a set again... just saying...
Lots of articulation, yes, but it definitely runs a bit quirky as an entire system. I had to fidget a lot to move him the way I wanted to. That being said, once you get him posed right, the look is incredible

[chuckles in secret Teridax] The articulated torso on this set was a huge inspiration for me. I once did a pair of Transformers builds, first of a 1'+ Optimus Prime, and then a 2' tall Megatron -- they were fully articulated, including waist and shoulder articulation, and in Megatron's case even jaw, wrist, and two-point knee articulation. Still one of my proudest builds, and I don't think I would have had the engineering ideas in my head if not for this killer set coming out a couple years prior.
Maxilos and Brutakka are easily tied for Best Titan set imo. Brutakka's torso is arguably better, but I'd say Maxilos' limbs are undoubtedly better than Brutakka's. Spinax being a banger Rahi set is just icing on the cake.
Awesome set. I was lucky enough to receive it at Christmas 2007 together with lesovikk. I agree with you regarding the color scheme, I find there is too much silver and gray, although I understand the reason why. Unfortunately, as you say, the biggest flaw of this set is precisely its stability, and also its posability, I would dare to say (Speaking of maxilos). Often I can't keep it in the position I want because the legs give way under the weight of the body, the arms are also very heavy and tend to fall downwards. It remains one of the best bionicle sets in any case.
I like how, intended or not, this set has a lot of design elements carried over from the original 03 Makuta set. The triangular feet with the Bhorok eyes, the ball joint at the abdomen, the silver armor piece on his back, the huge shoulders, etc. Not only that, thr color blocking on him is shot for shot Makuta's, especially with the red and gunmetal gray placements. I'll honestly sometimes stick the mask of Shadows on him as a bulked out Teridax
I got one of these recently while buying and selling Bionicles, but I couldn't build it all because two of the bags were still factory sealed and I didn't want to tank its value. So I only got to build Spinax and the arms on Maxilos, which was disappointing (worth it for when it sold later, though). It smelled like smoke when it arrived and I went through a lot of dryer sheets trying to get that smell out of the instructions. So my experiences with this set have unfortunately been rather underwhelming, but I really like how it looks and I would have loved to see the whole Maxilos model in person. The extra articulation in the body really makes for a unique build, too (no Piraka or Inika upper torso pieces used). On another note, it's strange that you say we haven't seen waist articulation in a while when Pridak had it just a few reviews ago.
I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one to think Maxilos' mask looks a LOT like Tahu Mata's. but personally I think that's awesome. It can be seen as an alternate style Hau
I LOOOOVE this set. Got it in a €130 lot along with the full Kardas ensemble, some Toa Mahri and Barraki as well as the Jetrax T6. I already know how lucky I got there LOL. But back to Maxilos, just everything about his look and construction is so amazing. I adore that for once the gappiness actually works and even seems to be a deliberate design choice. The shoulder constructions are incredibly clever and I just love how crazy you can pose the model. His long neck thing seemed weird at first, but it's actually so expressive! Just hunching him forward a little bit changes the appearance so much. The staff is cool and the shoulder-mounted Cordak is badass. And then you add Spinax because apparently more = better, you get him in some crazy aggressive running pose and you have my favorite Bionicle set! For the figure, at least... Some of the vehicles are very strong contenders as well. I too did have an issue with stability though, which I blamed on the worn-out hip joints (got mine used) and pretty weak connection (only one socket per leg). I fixed it by adding even more pistons, which both functions great and looks AMAZING. But now that you mention it, increasing the footprint could be a solution as well. Also if you feel like getting rid of his four thigh armor bits please hook me up, cos they weren't in my set and they're exclusive to it so expensive as crap LOL
I got a sealed one a couple years ago for just a bit more than 200€, I even got a discount because the box was slightly concave at the front. At the time I thought I'd paid a bit too much for it, but hearing how much a sealed maxilos and spinax goes for nowadays I don't regret it even a bit
I just completed the Toa Mahri team (Hewkii was the last set I needed) so I now plan on start collecting the Titans from 2007. This is a set I really wanted to get years ago but was not able to (didn't have a job and my parents considered it too expensive to allow me to use the money I saved (they kept it so I'd not spend it without permission), also, my youger brother and cousin damaged my collection because I forgot to lock my room and my parents blamed me for everything because they "didn't know what they were doing" and stopped buying sets as rewards for helping around the house, be it cleaning, washing dishes, hanging clothes and so on.). I may be able to buy it next month or a bit latter, just need some budget first. Edit: I rebuilt my collection, it took me years and now I'm expanding it slowly. My Bionicle Collection was my only "friend" when I was younger (silly, I know), it helped me stay strong when I was bullied (I had a pocket knife held against my neck once and was forces to swallow piece of chalk, that school was hell on earth).

@ Some sets are quite expensive indeed. It takes a lot of patience to save enough money for them but it's worth it and teaches a lot about financial responsibility and long term thinking.
@@vaimantobe3034 Bricklink usually has the best prices but sometimes local sellers have the sets for a good price too, sometimes I get lucky (Toa Mahri jaller was very cheap because the chain was missing but I never intended to use it, I found a way to attach the Hahnah Crab to his back, I have a tutorial on my channel if you'd like to see how I did it). That school is a place I really dislike but I need to go inside when there are elections in my country. fortunatelly when I changed school years ago it got better and the bullying stopped.
The colours similarities makes sense, it's because Teridax does poses this figure. The price is probably because that this is the last set in g1 that represents Teridax
Finally, from the moment I found your channel and first commented in the Toa Metru review, every week I have been waiting for this review. Maxilos here, is my favorite figure of all time, favorite Lego set, favorite 'toy' of all time, just, great. I don't have much to say about this one, but as I'm writing this before watching the video, I'm definitely excited to see your thoughts on this set!
When I see the design of the Maxilos robot, my imagination paints him as this planet ending force of brutal devastation, my imagination makes me think of him in a bad ending cutscene for a video game that plays out like this. The hero fails, one fatal mistake of leaving the villain alive through mercy causes a chain of events which awakens the true evil, a robot whose power and aggression easily overpower any race in the universe. The Maxilos robot smashes and cuts his restraints into metallic ribbon and without hesitation ignites the facility and its staff into a roaring fire and blasts off of the planet shooting straight towards earth. A orange hellish glare emits from his mask as he lands into the surface and begins to wreak havoc on the entire population of the earth, all to the time of "Challenge Failed" from Ratchet Deadlocked.
I just recently bought both this set and the Hydraxon set and I gotta say, I wasn't too impressed with the leg construction. The axle pumps are great, and this could be because the pieces are old but the socket-axle pieces that attach to ball joints were loose. Spinax I agree could have been its own set from how good it is, but these two sets were kinda turnoffs for having any kind of titan sets at all. Also: "his color scheme makes me think of the '03 makuta set." Hhmmmmm, I wonder why...... XD On that note, I don't know if this is true or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Hau similarity is a callback to the Hau that Makuta wore back in the 2001 arc as a bit of back-shadowing to anyone who actually reads about this particular Maxilos.
Just want to mention the moment in the story when this Big boy standed 1 vs 100.000 sea creatures just to buy the Toa some time, what a battle to imagine!
I loved this set as a kid. He was so much more intricate and big then the other titan sized and spinax was a cool addition and use of the newer parts. When i read the lore behind him as a kid it made perfect sense it was Makuta driving em.
I remember getting mine really cheap cib! (Around 60 usd?) I was really excited when I got it and fell in love with the final product. Yes, these feet might be quite unstable but like you said, looks incredible for display! Top 3 Titans indeed!
Here I was, only blaming the rubberized joints for my difficulty standing him up, when the skinny feet were helping quite a bit. I love this set, my favorite titan set (although I don't have any of the 2006 ones), it just works so well. Also the Makuta color scheme kinda makes sense because this robot is actually Makuta himself. Also bending the knees on Spinax inward is a very cool technique, gonna have mine that way
“The pet is Spinax” has always been a great quote just because Makuta is kind enough to differentiate himself from the animal. I love this set. Finally we get another “Makuta” set with some awesome articulation, probably the best we’ll see Titan-wise. I gave him a Piraka eye so he can turn his eyes on and off when he talks, kind of like movie Turaga Vakama. Another great review. I’m glad that HOLY GADUNKA is next.
Makuta Terridax was something of a mix between Vader and Voldemort. He wanted the Matoran to worship him and his powers such as Voldemort but was cold and calculating like Vader.
I remember when I was in elementary school my baby sitter got me this set and then my parents got me a second one for Christmas then my grandmother got me a third for my birthday 😂 I kept the other two for extra parts, but in general I LOVED this titan set for sure
Yeah, I added some chain links from my Vezon set because Vezon needed them less than Max did. Also, him being reminiscent of Makuta in color scheme is probably on purpose because he's possessed by Teridax during the Mahri arc.
In the bionicle lore Maxilos was makuta teridax in disgusie, as teridax did not want to reveal his true identity to the birraki as they were old friends, but it was an acquaintance he wished not to renew for a good reason. 80,000 years ago the birraki/the league of six kingdoms decided to revolt against the great spirit mata nui, and teridax was tasked to lead the brother hood of makuta under orders from makuta miserix to hunt down and execute the birraki for revolting against the great spirit.
This is one that was really cool the piraka feet as his claws is a nice design , I didn’t know his story , I’m sure there’s a exclusive set of this line it’s a green titan set with 2 matoran I think are you gonna get to it
That's Karzahni. It's so expensive and rare right now that he has truble finding the set with a box, so I hope he can find it anytime soon. The matoran are Sarda and Idris btw.
maxilos has gone down in price sealed and i am thinking about getting it in new, currently 3 US listings on brinklink for around 400 bucks, one in UK sealed in bag, but not in the box for 311, but shipping on bricklink is always crazy, so id imagine it be around 400 as well.
This was the only non-store-exclusive Titan set which I didn't have, but the friend of someone I was friends with at the time did. Additionally, 2007 was the first year where the Titans didn't have combiner models. This is actually the last set to have those Technic axle connectors in transparent red. The rubber spikes from Ehlek appear in silver here and in Gadunka, but they also appear in two "Castle" sets (7092 and 7038) between 2007 and '08, and a Space Police III set (5980) in 2009. Spinax marks the debut of the Piraka knee armor in silver, and the final appearance of the Visorak double socket joint in medium stone. He also is the only set with Carapar's head in silver, and that piece would also be seen in a melding of black and white in the "Toa Terrain Crawler" (8927) that year. Maxilos is the final set to have the Visorak double socket joint in Mata red, and the second and final set to have the Slizer limb in that color. Thus leaves only the colors of yellow and black for its use in the rest of the theme. He is the first of four sets to have Kalmah's feet recolored in gunmetal, and the Toa Metru feet in that color are exclusive to him. Much like with Makuta Teridax, Maxilos also a piece representing a treasured item (such as the Mask of Life) somewhere on his body...
Maxilos was one of the first bionicle sets i ever got, and i loved playing with it for years. Sadly most of his pieces broke apart, so i remade them into some MOCs. I've still got Spinax, tho. Maybe if I could find an offer on bricklink for just the Maxilos Robot I'd be good.
What really made this set my favourite Bionicle ever since is that, while other titans have an excellent appearence (... Brutaka), this one's such a fun set to play around with. That's also why Karzahni is arguably my second most favourite set btw
I feel like this mask would have made much more sense for Phantoka-era Tahnu/Mistika-Tahu (I forget which wave he was in) as a flight-capable Hau - it looks so much like a more sinister version of it.
What's with Teridax constant theme of having the mask he's chasing after in his set Makuta has the mask of Light for hands and as Maxilos he has the mask of life for shoulders
I too counted the chain pieces when i got this set way back when and i was disappointed but yeah this set otherwise is one of my favorites that i got as a kid.
My main gripe with this set is that it moves too freely. The waist connection is connected to the "inner shoulders" too, so one very easily triggers the other. And his shoulders did not need to move that much, so the choice to have them all connected was not a good choice in my opinion.

I just realized Maxilos's mask piece (which I know is just the Maxilos robots' faceplates) loooks more like an underwater adapted Hau and an adaptive version of the Hau Nuva the the actual adaptive Hau Nuva from the Mistika Tahu set from 2008 which was released just a year later which is highly amusing, frustrating and confusing all at once to me.
Did you say Maxilos is less dense than Hydraxon? Maxilos is basically a skeleton lol. But I guess since you have to build up a lot of his body part, there are more pieces.

Even thought I'm not crazy about the mid to late sets. This is definitely one of the best Bionicle sets out there period.

Often I can't keep it in the position I want because the legs give way under the weight of the body, the arms are also very heavy and tend to fall downwards. It remains one of the best bionicle sets in any case.
The Hau and the color scheme are absolute throwbacks to 2001 Makuta as a Matoran and 2003 Makuta during the MOL saga.

I like how, intended or not, this set has a lot of design elements carried over from the original 03 Makuta set. The triangular feet with the Bhorok eyes, the ball joint at the abdomen, the silver armor piece on his back, the huge shoulders, etc. Not only that, thr color blocking on him is shot for shot Makuta's, especially with the red and gunmetal gray placements. I'll honestly sometimes stick the mask of Shadows on him as a bulked out Teridax
I got one of these recently while buying and selling Bionicles, but I couldn't build it all because two of the bags were still factory sealed and I didn't want to tank its value. So I only got to build Spinax and the arms on Maxilos, which was disappointing (worth it for when it sold later, though). It smelled like smoke when it arrived and I went through a lot of dryer sheets trying to get that smell out of the instructions. So my experiences with this set have unfortunately been rather underwhelming, but I really like how it looks and I would have loved to see the whole Maxilos model in person. The extra articulation in the body really makes for a unique build, too (no Piraka or Inika upper torso pieces used).
On another note, it's strange that you say we haven't seen waist articulation in a while when Pridak had it just a few reviews ago.

I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one to think Maxilos' mask looks a LOT like Tahu Mata's. but personally I think that's awesome. It can be seen as an alternate style Hau
I found it to be a great homage!
It makes sense for a prison guard robot to have a face modeled after the Hau to be fair.
It also doubles as a callback to Makuta wearing a Hau when we first saw him posing as a Matoran.
I LOOOOVE this set. Got it in a €130 lot along with the full Kardas ensemble, some Toa Mahri and Barraki as well as the Jetrax T6. I already know how lucky I got there LOL.
But back to Maxilos, just everything about his look and construction is so amazing. I adore that for once the gappiness actually works and even seems to be a deliberate design choice. The shoulder constructions are incredibly clever and I just love how crazy you can pose the model. His long neck thing seemed weird at first, but it's actually so expressive! Just hunching him forward a little bit changes the appearance so much. The staff is cool and the shoulder-mounted Cordak is badass. And then you add Spinax because apparently more = better, you get him in some crazy aggressive running pose and you have my favorite Bionicle set! For the figure, at least... Some of the vehicles are very strong contenders as well.
I too did have an issue with stability though, which I blamed on the worn-out hip joints (got mine used) and pretty weak connection (only one socket per leg). I fixed it by adding even more pistons, which both functions great and looks AMAZING. But now that you mention it, increasing the footprint could be a solution as well.
Also if you feel like getting rid of his four thigh armor bits please hook me up, cos they weren't in my set and they're exclusive to it so expensive as crap LOL

I build Maxilos with spare and borrowed parts, damn is he big and I think this was the last Titan with the most creative Torso build I've seen
I got a sealed one a couple years ago for just a bit more than 200€, I even got a discount because the box was slightly concave at the front. At the time I thought I'd paid a bit too much for it, but hearing how much a sealed maxilos and spinax goes for nowadays I don't regret it even a bit

I just completed the Toa Mahri team (Hewkii was the last set I needed) so I now plan on start collecting the Titans from 2007.
This is a set I really wanted to get years ago but was not able to (didn't have a job and my parents considered it too expensive to allow me to use the money I saved (they kept it so I'd not spend it without permission), also, my youger brother and cousin damaged my collection because I forgot to lock my room and my parents blamed me for everything because they "didn't know what they were doing" and stopped buying sets as rewards for helping around the house, be it cleaning, washing dishes, hanging clothes and so on.).
I may be able to buy it next month or a bit latter, just need some budget first.

I rebuilt my collection, it took me years and now I'm expanding it slowly.
My Bionicle Collection was my only "friend" when I was younger (silly, I know), it helped me stay strong when I was bullied (I had a pocket knife held against my neck once and was forces to swallow piece of chalk, that school was hell on earth).

It takes a lot of patience to save enough money for them but it's worth it and teaches a lot about financial responsibility and long term thinking.
@@vaimantobe3034 Bricklink usually has the best prices but sometimes local sellers have the sets for a good price too, sometimes I get lucky (Toa Mahri jaller was very cheap because the chain was missing but I never intended to use it, I found a way to attach the Hahnah Crab to his back, I have a tutorial on my channel if you'd like to see how I did it).
That school is a place I really dislike but I need to go inside when there are elections in my country. fortunatelly when I changed school years ago it got better and the bullying stopped.
Maxilos is my favorite Makuta sets (if you count it as one). Great review like usuall.

The colours similarities makes sense, it's because Teridax does poses this figure. The price is probably because that this is the last set in g1 that represents Teridax

Makuta is possessing this dude's body, so it fits perfectly that the colour scheme is Makuta.
When I see the design of the Maxilos robot, my imagination paints him as this planet ending force of brutal devastation, my imagination makes me think of him in a bad ending cutscene for a video game that plays out like this.
The hero fails, one fatal mistake of leaving the villain alive through mercy causes a chain of events which awakens the true evil, a robot whose power and aggression easily overpower any race in the universe. The Maxilos robot smashes and cuts his restraints into metallic ribbon and without hesitation ignites the facility and its staff into a roaring fire and blasts off of the planet shooting straight towards earth. A orange hellish glare emits from his mask as he lands into the surface and begins to wreak havoc on the entire population of the earth, all to the time of "Challenge Failed" from Ratchet Deadlocked.
I think the "All aboard the Landstalker" ost would fit him better
I just recently bought both this set and the Hydraxon set and I gotta say, I wasn't too impressed with the leg construction. The axle pumps are great, and this could be because the pieces are old but the socket-axle pieces that attach to ball joints were loose. Spinax I agree could have been its own set from how good it is, but these two sets were kinda turnoffs for having any kind of titan sets at all.
Also: "his color scheme makes me think of the '03 makuta set." Hhmmmmm, I wonder why...... XD
On that note, I don't know if this is true or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Hau similarity is a callback to the Hau that Makuta wore back in the 2001 arc as a bit of back-shadowing to anyone who actually reads about this particular Maxilos.
This is considered by many to be THE BEST Bionicle sets. Articulation, build, color scheme, everything is almost perfect with Maxilos.
Sometimes I wish I go to a Lego store or Walmart or any store really and find the best old bionicle sets with their original price lol

I loved this set as a kid. He was so much more intricate and big then the other titan sized and spinax was a cool addition and use of the newer parts. When i read the lore behind him as a kid it made perfect sense it was Makuta driving em.

I was really excited when I got it and fell in love with the final product. Yes, these feet might be quite unstable but like you said, looks incredible for display! Top 3 Titans indeed!
Here I was, only blaming the rubberized joints for my difficulty standing him up, when the skinny feet were helping quite a bit. I love this set, my favorite titan set (although I don't have any of the 2006 ones), it just works so well. Also the Makuta color scheme kinda makes sense because this robot is actually Makuta himself. Also bending the knees on Spinax inward is a very cool technique, gonna have mine that way

“The pet is Spinax” has always been a great quote just because Makuta is kind enough to differentiate himself from the animal.
I love this set. Finally we get another “Makuta” set with some awesome articulation, probably the best we’ll see Titan-wise. I gave him a Piraka eye so he can turn his eyes on and off when he talks, kind of like movie Turaga Vakama.

Well Actuslly this Maxilos was possessed by Makuta Teridax during the 2007 line so it makes sense the color scheme is reminiscent of the 2003 set

Makuta Terridax was something of a mix between Vader and Voldemort. He wanted the Matoran to worship him and his powers such as Voldemort but was cold and calculating like Vader.
Not a huge fan of 2007, but this set is awesome! Maxilos looks great and I always love more rahi. Might have to pick this up.
I remember when I was in elementary school my baby sitter got me this set and then my parents got me a second one for Christmas then my grandmother got me a third for my birthday 😂 I kept the other two for extra parts, but in general I LOVED this titan set for sure
Yeah, I added some chain links from my Vezon set because Vezon needed them less than Max did.
Also, him being reminiscent of Makuta in color scheme is probably on purpose because he's possessed by Teridax during the Mahri arc.
The colorscheme is intentional as Maxilos is supposed to be possesed by Makuta in the 2007 storyline. Which I actually like about this guy
In the bionicle lore Maxilos was makuta teridax in disgusie, as teridax did not want to reveal his true identity to the birraki as they were old friends, but it was an acquaintance he wished not to renew for a good reason. 80,000 years ago the birraki/the league of six kingdoms decided to revolt against the great spirit mata nui, and teridax was tasked to lead the brother hood of makuta under orders from makuta miserix to hunt down and execute the birraki for revolting against the great spirit.

This is one that was really cool the piraka feet as his claws is a nice design , I didn’t know his story , I’m sure there’s a exclusive set of this line it’s a green titan set with 2 matoran I think are you gonna get to it

maxilos has gone down in price sealed and i am thinking about getting it in new, currently 3 US listings on brinklink for around 400 bucks, one in UK sealed in bag, but not in the box for 311, but shipping on bricklink is always crazy, so id imagine it be around 400 as well.
This was the only non-store-exclusive Titan set which I didn't have, but the friend of someone I was friends with at the time did. Additionally, 2007 was the first year where the Titans didn't have combiner models. This is actually the last set to have those Technic axle connectors in transparent red. The rubber spikes from Ehlek appear in silver here and in Gadunka, but they also appear in two "Castle" sets (7092 and 7038) between 2007 and '08, and a Space Police III set (5980) in 2009. Spinax marks the debut of the Piraka knee armor in silver, and the final appearance of the Visorak double socket joint in medium stone. He also is the only set with Carapar's head in silver, and that piece would also be seen in a melding of black and white in the "Toa Terrain Crawler" (8927) that year. Maxilos is the final set to have the Visorak double socket joint in Mata red, and the second and final set to have the Slizer limb in that color. Thus leaves only the colors of yellow and black for its use in the rest of the theme. He is the first of four sets to have Kalmah's feet recolored in gunmetal, and the Toa Metru feet in that color are exclusive to him. Much like with Makuta Teridax, Maxilos also a piece representing a treasured item (such as the Mask of Life) somewhere on his body...
Spinax doesn't have a recolor of Carapar's head piece, his head piece is a unique mold.
Lego recently released Cole’s titan mech, and that could be an equivalent to Maxilos in term of articulation for system mechs

Maxilos was one of the first bionicle sets i ever got, and i loved playing with it for years. Sadly most of his pieces broke apart, so i remade them into some MOCs. I've still got Spinax, tho. Maybe if I could find an offer on bricklink for just the Maxilos Robot I'd be good.

What really made this set my favourite Bionicle ever since is that, while other titans have an excellent appearence (... Brutaka), this one's such a fun set to play around with.
That's also why Karzahni is arguably my second most favourite set btw
I feel like this mask would have made much more sense for Phantoka-era Tahnu/Mistika-Tahu (I forget which wave he was in) as a flight-capable Hau - it looks so much like a more sinister version of it.

As a kid it used to bum me out that they decided to use le-bohrak kal shields on Maxillos as I felt it leaves gaps that other bohrok shields wouldn’t

I too counted the chain pieces when i got this set way back when and i was disappointed but yeah this set otherwise is one of my favorites that i got as a kid.
My main gripe with this set is that it moves too freely. The waist connection is connected to the "inner shoulders" too, so one very easily triggers the other. And his shoulders did not need to move that much, so the choice to have them all connected was not a good choice in my opinion.

i guess because he looks like a makuta is because he *is* makuta, like terridax, he controlled the robot while he was still in a spirit state after the 2003 story

I just realized Maxilos's mask piece (which I know is just the Maxilos robots' faceplates) loooks more like an underwater adapted Hau and an adaptive version of the Hau Nuva the the actual adaptive Hau Nuva from the Mistika Tahu set from 2008 which was released just a year later which is highly amusing, frustrating and confusing all at once to me.
So apparently they went over budget on one of the titans in 07 and had to downscale the baraki. My bet is it’s this guy or karzanhi.
