We learned today that Ben Franklin invented this instrument so I had to hear it! What an amazing performance...I wonder how many exist in the world still?! I see that only five people across the globe know how to play it... stunning
you are right, my husband and me (Wiener Glasharmonika Duo) and not more than 4 to 5 people are playing the original Glassarmonica invented by B. Franklin(I don't include musicians playing on Verrophon but wrongly call it Glassarmonica)
I have an old Casio keyboard that has the "Armonica" sound in it. Didn't know what that was until I played it and now, I use that setting almost exclusively for classical and even some modern stuff. The sound is amazing, totally amazing...
I don't understand, how does someone become an expert performer with this? What's the related instrument you start with? The instrument seems rare enough that someone would have to already be a recognized musician to even be allowed to play one
I started with violin and played in an austrian orchestra. then I changed and on the glassharmonica you have to do the same as on any other instrument: practising, practising, practising - but I love to play the original Franklinsche Glasharmonika - also Mozarts Compositions for this instrument as well as donizettis Lucia di Lammermoor and nowadays a lot of contemporary music!
@@WienerGlasharmonikaDuo is it at all possible to influence the dynamics? And what about articulation (attack but also end of each note)? - I'm fascinated by your instrument!
I remember hearing this 40 yrs. ago while sitting in my car. Being a harmonica player, I just couldn't imagine what a glass harmonica was.
Космическая музыка! Восторг!
Моцарт гений!

The flute obbligato for the Mad Scene in Lucia di Lammermoor was originally for glass harmonica. That would sound really spooky!
Indeed! I am looking forward to play it again this winter in Augsburg Oper (Germany)
Thank you for this uploading

Well done to all these interpreters. They dare!
This is, I think, the only musical instrument that has to be played with wet hands!
Wasn't the Dance ofcthe Sugar Plumb Fairy originally for Glass Harmonica---now played on q celesta?
It was original written for Celesta - a new invention at those time, there were no more Glass Harmonica player and the instrument disappeared...
@@WienerGlasharmonikaDuo Thanks for the clarification.
Da es anscheinend nur noch 5 Menschen auf der ganzen Welt gibt, die Glasharmonika spielen können, sollte man hier ruhig mal respektvoll lauschen.
