That happened to me as a kid. Wasn't a bootleg, just a really crappy football LCD game as a christmas present from my grandpa. I didn't like football.
I think my parents taught me really well because even as a 6 year old I wanted to play it to make my grandpa happy and at least give the shitty popstation type thing a try.
For me it was those really shitty flash game websites filled with "pregnant elsa foot doctor makeover" type games. My mom was looking something up on my grandpa's computer and my stupid 8-year-old self was all like "are there any my little pony games?" Because i was obsessed with MLP growing up. The following summer i would go into my grandpa's room everyday and play MLP games after he was done reading his emails and one day my mom got REALLY mad at me because i had accidentally downloaded a bunch of malware onto his computer because i played the games too much (that and the fact that i would click ads and immediantly close the tab afterwards probably had something to do with it)
That one corner of the level, with the cloud platforms that barely function, will never leave my memory.
I just realized the reason Gray Fox is named 'Flank' is bc its a mistranslation of Frank,, which is Gray Fox's actual name, Frank Jaeger

2:49 I think this game might actually be good in the original language, because they got a really minute detail right (half right?) - Gandalf's race is written as "wizard". Wizards in Tolkien lore indeed aren't human. So this could be a genuine labor of love.

You know what's really interesting about bootlegs? When coming across enough of them, you sort of know what to expect through how the game looks, sounds, or even plays.
A big example of this would be the weird Lord of the Rings, Shrek, Sonic, and Mario bootlegs. That same developer made a Rayman bootleg and you could 100% expect what it's like.
Same way with the Russian Sega Genesis bootlegs and Sintax games.
I wonder if the same inputs would finish them all.

so I wondered if Bootleg May's name meant anything cool or funny, and it turns out "ChunZi" translates to "Haruko"

The reskinning here is very similar to all of the SNES bootlegs Joel ran into, where the game Bonkers was passed off as many different games.

Holy shit I think I might have played that bootleg pokemon sapphire as a kid, I didn't know it was a shitty translation back then cause I didn't speak english, I only noticed that the pokemon didn't have the right names, it had a bug where the game crashed after beating the 6th gym.

It is a team of over a dozen people each performing their role for the community. #4 He has been streaming practically every day for the past 10 years. @@8Kazuja8 theyre fun if you can deal with a janky GBC-era Pokemon clone, id say. the battle system is largely bland and has some huge issues (the type system makes no damn sense), but the monsters are great and the story/world is fun
