    Imagine a world where Audi manages to mount their engines behind the front transaxle.....yes,absolute world domination.

    • @newgenerationisbg
      @newgenerationisbg 8 років тому +7

      Sadly, until we see a revised Quattro system, they are stuck with the overhung design. They have massively improved on it since the olden days though. Stick a brand new A4 against an S2 and you will see the difference in handling. Making their engines out of aluminium and mounting them slightly further back has brought them even closer to the sports car feel. Currently though, the weight and space savings of having the front diff in the gearbox is more than worth the less-playful nature. And they are still very fast despite the obvious drawback. Look back at Top Gear's comparison between the E46 M3 and the B6 S4. The S4 was quite a bit heavier, whilst making just a little bit more horsepower and suffering from it's engine mounting position. The M3 was faster in a straight line, lighter and has the engine mounted very far back, yet the fatter S4 still managed a 1 second quicker lap time than the E46 M3.

    • @quigonjay9
      @quigonjay9 8 років тому

      What you meant to say was "behind the front axle". Transaxle refers to a car where the engine is at the front and the gearbox is at the back axle.

    • @newgenerationisbg
      @newgenerationisbg 8 років тому

      quigonjay9 Transaxle means that the transmission and final drive components are one big component instead of a few (For instance, in Audis it means that the front diff and tranny are in one package.

Also this car probably holds its value very well. Seems like an amazing car to buy.

    Um...the original McLaren F1 was clocked at 3.6s to 60 by some testers when it was first released. Others tested it at 3.4s...and I think the best it ever did was 3.2s. So, just goes to show how far we've come...

      Doar Eu Yeah. The computer-controlled perfect launch programs, and the fast shifts of modern dual-clutch gearboxes are helping a lot in the 0-60 times of today. But if it was tested for the rolling in-gear times the McLaren F1 would still smash this thing.

      While electric cars accelerates fast (which is not really due to great tesla engineering, but merely how electric motors work), it still doesn't help when driven at speed, they don't last long. Plus nothing beats having your car range extended to full in under 5 minutes. Takes much too long to charge an electric vehicle which makes them a lot less practical if you have to take longer trips than the maximum range of the car.

    How about a drag comparison of TT's, from the mk1 225 up to the new RS?

  • @lapamful
    @lapamful 8 років тому +9

    First time I feel attracted to a TT. Thankfully Audi's managed to iron out some of the more gawky aspects of the TT's looks. Only thing is that AWD system. Too many manufacturers doing it now and on a 50K car??
    Dunno, but if I were in the market for this kind of car, I wouldn't choose it over the Cayman, but would def choose it over the Porsche 718 (I know it's ten grand cheaper), but the 718 and even the Cayman don't sound anything nearly as good as the TT RS.

    • @3232schmitty
      @3232schmitty 8 років тому +1

      AWD is what Audi does best. Expecting a performance oriented Audi without Quattro is sort of like expecting a Ferrari to sound like crap, it just ain't gonna happen. For me this car makes perfect sense because I live in the snow belt of the USA and AWD is practically a requirement on any car that I plan buying.

    • @lapamful
      @lapamful 8 років тому +1

      Bailey Smith I'm just old enough to remember the old Top Gear and they used to feature a lot of rallying. And this was back in the days when Audi and Subaru were killing it, and trying to kill each other, out on the rallying stages. But the AWD system of the TT RS isn't the same system. Not by a long shot. It does not have the same heritage or capability being a FWD bias.
      I can understand manufacturers doing it on cheaper cars, but not at this price point.

    • @3232schmitty
      @3232schmitty 8 років тому +2

      I know that this is a Haldex system and not the traditional Quattro set up, but Audi have a habit of doing their AWD really well. I have a current gen TTS, and only once have I found myself cursing the way the torque was split (to be fair to my car I was being a bit irresponsible). Like Matt said in this video the rock stars of this car are the engine, and the chassis. In my car, the chassis is super stiff and the engine makes enough power for my needs

    • @3232schmitty
      @3232schmitty 8 років тому

      lapamful addendum: I realize I kinda sound like an Audi fanboy, but I really like my car. I get that the whole Haldex AWD can dissuade some folks, and that's okay. If I lived in a warmer climate, I would probably have more closely considered consider the Porsche Boxster/ Cayman or the BMW M2, or perhaps even a Corvette

      It depends wat is important for you. I also drive a M235i (400ps). The TTRS is faster of the line. If you have a rolling start, the difference isn't much. The previous model was.. so this one 100% sure. But then again, there are some advantages such as the M235i has more space etc. I am also thinking for the TTRS as replacement and don't forget.
      You need to compare the TTS with the M235i, then the M235i is a winner for me (6 in line engine). The M2 should be the alternative for the TTRS.

    • @karlfontanari2169
      @karlfontanari2169 8 років тому

      Yes agree with that actually wanted the M2 when I went for the M235i as UK allocation all sold out guess the M2 better value than M3/4, so having a test drive end of the month from my local Audi dealer, then will look at costs and make a decision..

      Wonder where Audi will put the new 2.0L I4 TSi engine they're rumored to have a prototype already? There is already a (Golf R400) 400PS prototype version, but there are rumo(u)rs of a 420PS version. If so, the latter would replace the 400PS version on the TT-RS and an even more powerful version of the 2.5L I5 TSi might be for a TT-RS+.
      So watch out in the next few months, there's more from where that came from...

    Could you please review speedometer accuracy on a few cars? I heard that in the EU (including the UK) allowed speedometer error = current speed x 0.1 + 4 km/h. For example, if you were going 50 km/h, it would be considered ok for speedometer to show 59 km/h. There is a myth that it is done for safety reasons. Thanks :)

      Kirill Holstov In the EU it is: Above 50kph at least 4kph more shown but only up to 10%. So if you go 50 it can either show 54 or 55, if you're going 70 anywhere between 74 and 77. That rule is in place since 1998.

    why is Audi still putting the engine slightly passed the front axle push it back several inches and the car will handle beautifully stubborn car maker

    • @newgenerationisbg
      @newgenerationisbg 8 років тому +8

      If you compare an A4 to a BMW 3 series you will see why. The interior room in the A4 is better, so is the boot size, yet the cars are the same size. Also, the front diff being built-into the gearbox saves weight and space. Besides, Audis are still fast around tracks, the steering just feels dead compared to their competitors and the cars are more prone to understeer rather than oversteer.
      Still though, would love to see an A4 with a 5 cylinder mounted as far back as a 3 series, that would just dominate it's class.

    • @dor1tomcswagger69
      @dor1tomcswagger69 8 років тому

      exactly if they can figure out or sacrifice a little for performance they would dominate imagine a Audi that doesn't understeer at all that would be sweet especially a roadster like the tt rs I think audi thinks they can manage it because Porsche does til today still can figure out how Porsche keeps that rear end composed on their vehicles

    Matt, what I want to know is, does the new 5 Cylinder have a new turbo?... and what will it run with some nice APR bits stuck to it...? My RS3 is good for mid 11s now... I'd buy this in a heart beat if it were good for a 10.xx with full bolts ons!
    They can keep their pathetic 4 cylinder cockster, with its "organic steering feel" and "balance" ... give me a sub 3 second 0-100 monster that sounds like Walter Rohls S1 on anti-lag any day of the week!

    pretty fair review. i know people rip on the haldex system. but like you said its made to go fast.
    just like all the golf r vs focus rs reviews. but i bet you, you take 10 of those focus rs fanboys and time them around a track, they will be faster in the golf r.
    same with the tt rs vs the cayman.
    however i just dont see the comparison. you check all the right boxes for the go fast stuff in a cayman and you are at $100k.

    Hello all !
    Wondered if anyone could help me !
    Looking at either getting an Audi TTRS MK2 (2012) Model or a Porshe CAYMAN S (07-09) i have around 25k to spend and im so unsure what to get ! Leaning more to the TTRS due to the fact ive had an S1 for the past 4 years and bloody love it.
    And i have done some research on the running costs tyres/service ect on the Cayman and its very expensive IMO.
    However i cant find out as much about the TTRS,
    Any help or opinions would be amazing !
    Also, big question what sounds better in your opinion !
    Cheers

      Mercedes have made platforms that supports mounting the engine both longitudinally and transverse and it worked well. Volkswagen should have done the same with the MQB to allow for a more diverse range of models.

    You go on about the sound from the 5 cylinder engine and then cut to the sound from the exhaust, they're opposite ends of the car :/
    Also, you say that up to 50% of the power can go to the rear normally, does that mean it's 50-50 normally? On further reading it's a Haldex system which isn't great as it's similar to the S3 and Gold R systems which probably means it's front wheel drive until it detects a loss of grip.
