RC Flying Lego Airplane

- Behold! the worlds first RC flying lego plane! This has always been something i've wanted to try as a kid. Its humorous due to the nature of legos being super heavy and not a viable material for airframe construction.... well it was time for someone to put that theory to the test!
Some technical info...
The motor is a emax 2215/09 goo.gl/0L1Awc
Battery 1300mah 4S lipo goo.gl/oskavr
2X 9gram servos goo.gl/YH9FkN
spektrum DX8 transmitter goo.gl/zuGj3W
If you're new to RC, go check out FliteTest's beginner series (its a little dated but the info is still relevant) Its an excellent resource to getting into RC flight. (plus I used to work there :D)

I can't believe that thing flew with the aerodynamics of a chair and wings that were freaking rectangle and dotted!
The aerodynamics of a chair!! 😅
He flew a chair too 😂
That indeed caused a lot of drag, and some fine-tuning to the wing shape and angle could've also resulted into more lift so less power of engine needed, so higher top speed
I mean the bumps up top probably have it it's only lift XD
I didn't think it would fly without glueing it.
"Ah, Megabloks. That's how you knew your parents didn't care." I felt that.

Should have used more technic, its great for structural work.
And the whole thing could be Lego including all the motors.

Yup. Every engineer's childhood dream has at last been realized!
Yep, very good job. I'm wondering whether trying to copy an old bi-plane might be a better shape? Lego kind of like the flimsy and heavy materials early aero-engineers had to use..
A possibility for sure. I think the bigger issue is to get the area and weight distributions correct. This model had far too little vertical stabilizer area for the moment arm of the tail, which led to the wild yaw and roll behaviors it exhibited.

You should have used Technic as it's structurally better and has pieces perfect for making air foils also Power Functions are thing.
Ultimate-Dragon Gaming and Forging Technic is definitely more structurally sound, but PF components don't have nearly enough power to propel something of this weight - not to mention all the weight the PF components themselves would add. The battery boxes alone are far too heavy to make using them remotely viable.

The plural of Lego is Lego. Not Legos. It's like sheep. You have 1 sheep or a lot of sheep. You don't have sheeps or Legos.
Same here
Nice job Peter! Looks like the struts worked well. I was expecting the wings to fold. One good thing about the lego plane is that it can never really break. It'll just come apart then you just snap it back together and fly again. No hot glue required. I challenge you to make a lego propeller for it. You're allowed to use epoxy.

LEGO Technic pieces would probably provide a much better structural strength for the airframe, and the wings to think of it.
Using the LEGO building sheets as wings seems like a fundamentally bad idea because you can't really link them together in a reliable fashion, there's no connectors on the bottom of the plates so the joint is always going to be quite flimsy in one direction. Honestly if I had to build a LEGO R/C aircraft, I would make the airframe, formers, wing spars and ribs out of Technic parts and then cover the whole thing with transparent tape.
HerraTohtori there are baseplates that you can attach bricks to from the bottom as well.
Most of those types of plates are much smaller than these large base plates, though.
It's not about where you can attach things, it's more about whether the pieces are under tension or compression. Lego fundamentally rely just on the friction between the plastic surfaces to stay together which works fine for compressive load as well as side loads, but if you put a pillar of lego under tension (ie. pull on both ends) it will quite easily come apart.
The same thing will happen if you try to make a wing out of several plates and reinforce the connections by smaller plates on top and bottom, the joint plates on the top or bottom will wiggle their way loose when the joint starts to bend under flight loads - and this will happen on both sides (center on the concave side, edges on the convex side of the bend).
Trust me, I have more than a decade of intense Lego engineering experience under my belt, I know how these things work...
0:33 That is a piece of art dude! I mean, am I the only one who thinks that that is a legit piece of art?
No, I think too
Its amazing at how far lego has come over the years.
Personally,I felt you were the brains behind F.T.,same as David, but thats just my opinion. It isnt the same without your wacky, great ideas. Enough said.
who cares about flite test now that Peter has his own channel lol
Designandrew ,thats kinda like saying who cares about flying now that we reached space. Flite Test is going through some growing pains, again. I like the free downloadable plans for planes and they do have some decent content. Its like anything else, you have to pick and choose what you do with what is offered. David and Peter both brought some really good context to Flite Test. Unfortunately,I am starting to see them getting away from that, and am not sure I like some of the people they are bringing on board. They dont seem to be adding anything of interest. I see a particular person on there that ,I guess may have some kind of talent but havent figured it out other than mabe class clown,as we called them in school. I am probably being unfair but seems like the show is getting too many people on there that cannot possibly contribute the same ingenuity and intellect that Peter did.
scott firman flite test is an awful religious cult. I couldn't stand all the 'brothers' and church from Bixler so I unsubbed ages ago, he also seems like a terrible .boss to work for. I checked back occasionally though, and was happy to find Peter had flown the coop. I think these videos prove how much flite test was stifling Peter.
Isn't Chad Kapper the boss though? I thought Bixler was just one of the hosts
Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets those sorta vibes off them...

There was a review on Amazon about a lego plane set that sounded like this: "My lego plane doesn't fly!"
If the review was for your lego plane, it would've sounded like this: "My lego plane flies very well!"
Very good job!

This would've been 1000 times easier if you used technic pieces
Exactly what I was thinking.

Sometimes you need to ruin something for it to be reborn in a new form. Case to point: ^
ruining you say? I say fake news
he just made it better
The fact that you can build that makes me want to build a regular rc airplane.
Check out Peter on the original flitetest videos
gman1185 I actually just saw him in one because I bought a flight test kit today and was watching the video for it.
As someone who spends a lot of time figuring out how to make LEGO sets structurally sound I have to say a couple of things. 1: You need cross struts inside the structure, that will alleviate lots of the wobble that can shake it apart. 2: The saying less is more doesn't apply to LEGO flying machines, because they are so bumpy they create a lot of drag in the air so you need smooth parts going along the the wings to make it fly more stable
Excellent video and concept! I would have thought you would want to glue everything together, for durability. With some judicious use of glue on the wings, you might have been able to dispense with the wing spars, which would foster an improved thrust-to-weight ratio. It flew better than I thought it would, for a plane without ailerons.
You can't say Legos!!!!!!!! It is always Lego, or Lego bricks but NEVER Legos!!!
LXF it really doesn't matter
Capper101 IT DOES. Simply ask an AFOL.
Uh oh, the trademark police arrived. No, he can say "legos" if he wants to. LEGO would just prefer he doesn't.
LXF
Totally agree, legos is not a thing. It's Lego™ all the way 💯%
haha same here LXF
How this thing flew with the aerodynamics of a brick and the wings of an amateur plane maker is a mystery we will never solve...
I love your workshop and awesome job.thank you.
that's cool bro i think that is first lego plane creation in the world and u make that thing realy fly great job
He did not use lego to make that piece of shit fly. He used off brand motors, batteries and controller. It's possible to make a FULLY rc plane because Lego has created Power Function, Boost, and Mindstorms but he didn't.
It is possible to build a 100% LEGO glider, but not a 100% LEGO plane. The LEGO motors don't provide enough power compared to their weight, same goes for the battery boxes, and most LEGO propellers barely create any thrust.
"maby that can fly"*smashes it on table "look at that it can, now build it again"

Good job guys! Its not the best looking plane but u made it work.
very nice. I always fancied making a lego plane that flew, but never had the money for the rc stuff or extra lego. great to see you had success. You may be able to do the hinges for steering with lego, but I can't see how you could improve the wing plates as they can't be strengthened underneath without tape or glue. Maybe very long rubber bands to give tension underneath.
I have a question, where can I get the transmitter, esc, and everything else to make a rc because I am trying to build an model Cessna 357 and all I need is a the things that go in the rc and control and power it?

The only word to describe this is savage.. 1:26
my first lego was that exact set! omg the memories XD
I’d use normal plates with tiles on the top to smooth the wings out, then use as few bricks as I need to to keep the craft light. Then it’s a matter of making sure the motor drivetrain’s small enough to fit but still strong enough to fly. SNOT (Studs Not On Top) would work really well with making the plane lightweight, strong, and smooth. Using premade Lego cockpit pieces would also save on weight.
And remember: With *any* vehicle, *SYMMETRY IS KEY* .
