Tony I, recently found your channel and was so inspired I started drawing with a blunt charcoal as I was too tired to sharpen the pencil , it was late at night. I I was amazed how happy I was with the results. My question is, do you seal your portraits with a varnish spray? I cant wait to find nice paper and sharpen my charcoal and get going on this fantastic time saving technique. Thank you.

One thing that teachers never discuss is that as humans we are utterly fascinated with capturing beauty, but often ugliness is not mentioned, DaVinci was also fascinated with drawing these portraits, because as humans for us , we are attracted to either perfect beauty or true ugliness or what we perceive as ugliness , usually bad symmetry. Anything in between is mundane, and for us humans, artists, mediocrity is not interesting ! Many people are not aware of one of Davinci’s teacher a man named Verochio who is said to have been Ugly as sin, but yet he was the main engineer who was able to construct and put in place the basilica dome ! I wouldn’t mind hearing your take on this subject. My guess is that your audience are highly intelligent amateur artists who may have delved deeply into a lot of these subjects and are looking for the truth or drawing path to begin, improve etc.. and I guess we’ve found it!

I don't know much about Da Vinci only what I've seen (obvs :). I would imagine that to reach such high levels of creativity he didn't have to worry about the rent. Also that society wasn't so down on people with creative abilities as it is now. Regarding "ugliness" I'm not sure it's anything more than perception. The beauty that artists replicate is often superficial and I see great portraits of "beautiful" people that are nothing more than a layer of paint skilfully applied. It's why I focus on the essence of my subjects. Its' what drives my choice of subject and how I capture them. I'm reminded of the saying "it is the job of art to show the beauty in reality" and to do that you don't need great skill, you need humanity :)
