Amazing - what impresses me most is ppl like this actually have the vision to see to the end of the project. The inside of the house is so beautiful and seems a lot bigger than you'd expect.
this house is beautiful. The land in Berkeley was probably hundreds of thousands, potentially more depending on if it's in the hills. The house also *looks* like it could have easily cost many hundreds of thousands to build, if not more. It has a very elegant design. Those two are clearly very gifted and paid well for it! :)
Another fine example of re-purposing everyday common items found in 'junk yards'... you are showing us how to save the world and stay green, Thank you.
This house is awesome! and these people are amazing for the Who and Potter references. They need to adopt me. I love watching these vids about home sin small spaces or using recycled materials. My husband and I have a bit of property and there's a mobile home on it, but we really want to build something that is ours. These videos are my inspiration.
Really makes me hate going to work. Loving these houses away from the crap. so Serene! :-D Can Totally see them putting together a container house. Great idea with that insulated refrigerated one. Hmm What an architecs paradise.
Love how super organized the two of them are in order to make use of a house that is only 1170 sq. ft. Great that they have the three things that matter: Location, Location, and Location.
Brilliant and beautiful. Something like this could incorporate some elements I live: pocket doors, transom windows and heated floors. Very stylish, thank you!
Universal Building codes and code inspectors stops most people from doing exciting and fun creations in architecture. Some kids set my neighbors back alley fence on fire, when my neighbor was rebuilding it he was fined for not having a permit. This is a very nice house, reminds me of a houseboat, love the use of car parts.
WOW - sooo cool!!! I love the style/design of this gorgeous home and the green factor!!!! I, too, live in the SF bay area and know that there are a lot of innovative thinkers here, particularly when it comes to uniquely designed homes. Yours is just fabulous and a real one-of-a kind creation...well done!!!
My dream is to build and live in an alternative house, either like this, cob and straw bale, or even just a yurt! Too bad I bought a house right at the collapse of the housing market, so now I'm underwater and stuck in a boring neighborhood house!
It looks like the aft section of a big cabin cruiser. I thought for sure this was the look you were going for, but you never mention it. At 03:15 your scale mock-ups look like boats, but all you talk about is how much you want to incorporate old cars. Dude, face it, your house looks like a really nice boat.
I would be interested in hearing what you had to do to get this house past code compliance. I wanted to build a shipping container "barn" and when I mentioned it to the county community devlopment office, they said they would require about $10,000 worth of engeneering before we even started. Very depressing.
Dr. Who and Harry Potter references... Nerds! :) I love these people. I wish the video would have shown featured the upstairs/bedrooms, but a very cool space nonetheless.
I find it very funny that he thought 1100 sq ft was really small. The design ideas he wanted to implement were WAY too out there for me, but her's made total sense to me.
The point is to build with materials that aren't newly produced and transported but salvaged from the waste-stream. There is no advantage over local straw, adobe, or cob or even lumber except that it reduces the amount of waste going to landfill or being down-cycled. This could be viewed as up-cycling. There's another well-known house in Berkeley with siding made from freeway signs.
Its a shame not to have been able to see the full footprint of the home would have been great to have seen upstairs the relationship of the interior to the external space.
Hey ive got a non running dodge caravan, I will never look at those back windows the same.mine are tinted, great use for something I build next.please see videos, thx 4 sharing!
@sofiamedia We took some shots during our visit to the Wanaseljas. You'll find them on our Flickr photogallery. Look for our Photostream at Flickr on the directory "faircompanies". Once there, browse through our photo sets and you'll find "a green home built with salvaged car parts - berkeley, CA". You can also perform a Google search and it will come up one way or another. Cheers.
Build a house out of free building materials, like lumber, bricks, dirt, plastic, cloth, tarp. blankets etc. I need a good bathroom, shower room, sinks and mirrors and more mirrors. Insulated glass windows. Energy efficient or independent. With a flower and vegetable garden...
@ Ishmot2.Code in the state of California is more stringent than any other state in the US. We have earthquakes, building here is an adventure. As for a non existant problem, if more people were doing this sort of recycling it would save thousands of hours, dollars and fuel that is currently takes to recycle a car. One person isn't much of a dent obviously, Think of the money saved, the jobs that would be kept here in the US. Now almost all scrap steel is shipped to China to be processed
@1jostory If I tried this where I live they'd throw the book at me, even if I used normal material like masonry, But because they are Old Hippies in Berkeley saving the planet it's okay! If people really wanted to save the planet they would build out of masonry, like I said: Answer to an nonexistent problem, Taking some hoods out of the junk yard (although this house would look cool at Lake Mead) does not save anything but some hoods out of the junk yard.
Are you sure this is an upscale area? Look at the road condition and the uncut curbside grass...my poorest neighbourhood in Toronto has better condition.
@cdltpx Before you build a dome, read Lloyd Kahn's discussion of it. He knows whereof he speaks. Do a search for 'refried domes' to find the link. This system won't let me publish a link.

Very clever use of waste materials. Best of luck with future projects

A great example of extraordinary craftmanship!!!!

Great example of the power of individual ingenuity!

Fits the neighborhood well and I admire the use of recycled materials.
From a designer and builder of my own tiny home 130sq ft. My kudos on your inventive take on reuse of materials. Beautiful design!
Wow... this guy is genius.
As a car person myself I must say this is pretty awesome!
Really makes me hate going to work. Loving these houses away from the crap. so Serene! :-D Can Totally see them putting together a container house. Great idea with that insulated refrigerated one. Hmm What an architecs paradise.
the space inside is great!
This is a beautiful, well planned, and well sourced livable sculpture. It is quite an impressive labor of love. Bravo!
Love how super organized the two of them are in order to make use of a house that is only 1170 sq. ft. Great that they have the three things that matter: Location, Location, and Location.
Love this, small and elegant but not cramped.
Another great profile of a family of amazing creatives who have built a super cool tiny home built using recycled car parts! Bravo!
What a cute couple. Glad they found eachother!
Every week you find the most interesting and innovative homes! I love this one, a very well designed and aesthetically pleasing home for sure.
Very cool, different house!
Such a Rad house, awesome to see a couple of architects really interested in such cool, eco idea's as well.
Ps: second edit upstairs please!?
Wow, this house is beautiful! I love the different shades of grey and silver.

Design like a boat house. Exceptional!
Love it!
This house looks like a boat, which makes it even cooler in my opinion.
Loved this house!!!!! 😍

What did the junk yards charge you to cut pieces out of the cars?
I love the siding! Are there photos of this project somewhere?
Beautiful...But why go halfway and not show upstairs..Unless it was half finished??!
Love to see a re-visit! How are they doing, how does the house held up?
i want to see upstairs

Tardis reference. A+
Awesone!
love love love
HOw about an iconic vw bus, in its prefect complete form on the end?
Cool house. The guy should have cut the car windows and put them in a form so it looks upscale but to each his own.
I wonder what the fire rating would be for all of that plaster and drywall.
Would of liked to have seen upstairs.
aren't the tinted windows on the dodge just clear ones with an adhesive coating on the inside?
It's Oakland. You don't need heat or air conditioning for any building. The climate is perfect.
how often do you need to wax the house
Hey ive got a non running dodge caravan, I will never look at those back windows the same.mine are tinted, great use for something I build next.please see videos, thx 4 sharing!
nbahahaha doctor who police box reference i love this guy. it's bigger on the inside!
Car side windows are fragile; can be cracked tapped upon with a seat belt handle. Will be interesting to see how they hold up.
What's it like upstairs?
the car roofs are cool kewl but seems like it is more artistically repurposed rather than functionally repurposed.
@falcon02012
It's in Berkeley. He is an architect. What do you think?

The inside is very nice, the outside looks like a junk yard. I feel sorry for his neighbors.
@gdrewpowers Lol that was awesome

Where's the bedrooms?
@falcon02012
Why would he risk it all in a collision?
If you close your eyes, he sounds like a tired Seth Meyers.
it just make you say what the fuck i'm i doing in this apartment
