Haydn suffered a dangerous illness late-1770 or early-1771; in London in 1791, Haydn told a friend - Christian Latrobe - that he promised to the Virgin to compose a thanksgiving offering for his recovery. Latrobe assumed - wrongly - that Haydn meant the well-known Stabat Mater, but that was composed earlier in 1767 which was four years too early to fit the story. It is the lovely, but melancholy g minor Salve regina Hob.XXIIIb:2 of 1771 that was Haydn’s token of thanks.
I get your point, though many of them are actually more effective set in a proper sacred or liturgical context, and where they appear much more frequently - and not just in Catholic churches.
Wonderful masterpiece. Sadly, it is not as well known as it deserves. In our times we need more than ever this kind of beauty.
I love and have always loved Anthony Rolphe Johnson. This is such a gorgeous version of this masterpiece. Possibly the best.

You have a cathedral in Cadiz?
Gracias!
My pleasure Jorge

I remember having read that Haydn composed his Stabat Mater (or the g minor Salve Regina, perhaps) after recovering from a disease.

Thank you.
My pleasure Dejan!
A darkly inspired masterpiece. A pity that Haydn’s religious works don’t have a higher profile in the concert hall.
Thanks!
