Back in 2013, I was having tutor classes for my finals and my teacher had one of these. I remember noticing how nice the tablet looked, how bright and vivid the display was and how smooth the UI felt. That was the first time I came in contact with a Nexus product as well as when I learned about stock Android. A year later I purchased a Nexus 5 which, to this day, is still the phone that provided me with the most joyful experience and made me feel exactly the same as I felt about the tablet.
Coming from a Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, the Nexus 5 was leaps and bounds ahead - the feel in the hand, the IPS display, the stock Android KitKat experience, the performance, I could go on. It had its shortcomings, such as the battery and camera, but the pros outweighed the cons. In the 5 years of using it, I've learned how to root it and flash custom ROM's and kernels, and it still runs to this day. Now it's sitting inside its original box and I've flashed it back to the very first build of Android KitKat just for originality's sake.
Nexus 7 2013 really is peak Android tablet.
100%
Exactly, it is the gold standard how a tablet should be.
Definitely, Asus makes solid products
I bought a second hand one and it still runs
I still have mine!! 32gb model, I just charged it up and turned it on, updated all the apps. It’s still so fast for something that came out nearly a decade ago! I will keep this forever. The age of tablets this small is dead however this one will always be special to me.
Nexus 7 was my first tablet ever. It was bought to carry my electronic books I needed in my university. The size of it was just perfect! Very nice to carry in one hand!
Years later, I got iPad 9 with Apple Pencil. Then I changed it to iPad Pro and iPad Mini. But none of them were ever used as heavily, as I used my Nexus 7 during my bachelor studies.❤
I think it was a great Tablet back in time! I didn’t experience any problems with it! It is a bit sad, that now market for the small screen smartphones and tablets is decreasing.
someone need to make an updated nexus 7 :( we need more 7 inch tablets
I've used so many tablets, ios and android and this one was the most memorable
I actually started using it after this video. I remember being really happy with it at the time it launched.
Watching this on my 2013 Nexus 7 32gb. This thing is still a beast! It's a shame this line was abandoned. If you were to make a tablet with today's spec standards in this form and size it would sell like hotcakes! Would be the ipad mini competitor!
Hey, are you still able to use the official UA-cam app on it seeing as this maxes out on Android 6? Like without having to use a custom rom or anything. Is it still supported?
I still have my nexus 7 2013 in 2024. Its still perform well, battery changed to new. The screen started to burn after 11 years. Its amazing.🎉
Still use my Nexus to watch UA-cam and Netflix, probably the best Android tablet when it came out...
The tablet is iconic and worth every penny I paid for it.
Great video btw. Thumbs up!!
I remember being so excited getting this for my 10th birthday
I bought myself one of these as a reward for graduating college! One of my best purchases ever :)
Works great as an Android Auto headunit using headunit reloaded. Love it
Just started to use the nexus 7 again. The experience is just remarkable. The gyro is shot but nothing that screen rotate can fix. Performance is pretty good and perfect for the simple stuff.
I remember when I received this tablet as a christmas present as a 7-year-old kid. Many, many Angry Birds levels were completed.
My grandfather gifted me one of these for Xmas when it was new, I was 10 at the time and absolutely loved it…idk where I’ve put it anymore but I miss it :(
Still using my Nexus 7 2013. After all these years it’s still a beast with a gorgeous display.
Agreed, works surprisingly well with CapCut and the Motion Ninja video editor. Even Splice run smoothly with editing up to 4K video. Can't believe Android 6 is still so capable. Was top notch hardware back in 2013 with the 1920x1200 screen and still holds up excellent today. Avg is still 9 hrs on the battery. amazing.
can it run firefox?
@@BDRmongoose Yes. Firefox is compatible with Android 5.0 or above devices, which the Nexus 7 has running Android 6.0. Still amazing for a 2013 device with a Snapdragon S4 processor. Even runs FL Studio Mobile for music production, with minimal CPU lag.
@@Diglicous thanks for the info
These are one of the best tablets to repurpose today. Many applications for vehicle infotainment still exist.
I remember taking so many terrible yet nostalgic photos and videos with this tablet when I was a kid. :P
I’ve got mine running an unofficial nightly build of Lineage os and it runs great. There’s builds of Lineage os 18.1 which is in effect Android 11. Trick is to repartition the storage, so there’s enough space for the new os. It’s amazing that such an old tablet is still usable 😁
Still the best screen for a small tablet, even better than many brand new tablets in 2021!
Watching this on my Nexus 7 !!!
Me too
Same
Yes
Now i have this divice
But cant use
I still use mine for games, books, and videos. It's till amazing. It charges slow but other than that, it's still a great tablet.
Crazy how things change in 8 years
It is. Yeah it's slow but if this screen was on a 2021 phone no one would say it's bad
In the UK I bought this for £130. It was a brilliant tablet, amazing screen and good size. Afterwards tablets started going to £300-500 and you needed to pay £350+ to get a decent screen.
I still use mine to fly DJI phantom. The app is heavy these days but solved any shortcomings by over clocking the N7 2013 just enough stay ahead. It works great. I have newer iPhone and Samsung I could use instead but it's hard to beat the beautiful big screen
Still better than all 2g RAM tablets today.
I used to use my Nexus 7 for everything. It is kind of crazy to compare it to my Fold 3 and think about how far we've come. It is still kind of crazy to me that I can take a display bigger than the Nexus 7 and fold it up to fit in my pocket.
My dad uses Nexus7 2011 for GPS. Still working. Good battery life.
Great vid! Can you do ones on the nexus 9 & Pixel c 👌😄
Stay tuned
Yes, I'm here and my old batery 2022. 🙏🙋💪💪💪🖐
2012
Bought one of these back when they came out… I had no clue it had wireless charging.
I remember I really wanted one but couldn't get it at the time
Good devices - never die
Watching this on a Nexus 7. 👍
how can you do something quickly on yours, mine just stutters anything i do on it, games...forget that, trying to watch a 720 in vlc, it stutters badly
@@MrAndroidData Can't say it's quick any more, but it doesn't struggle with 720p videos at all. Not sure why yours gives you grief.
@@MrAndroidData i downgraded my android version to something earlier and Im using older versions of Netflix and Disney plus to run on mine.
What kind of security concerns are there with using this device without recent security patches??
Thanks
Still use mine as an ereader on stock rom
this video gave me a Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders earworm
Loved my N7 until I dropped it and ran over it with front wheel of my truck five years ago and Shattered the screen. Replaced the screen $35 and now I'm writing this on my 7. Working fine except Android 6. Came here while searching for advice/encouragement on installing Lineage. Somebody mentioned Ubuntu - really?
putting postmarketos with plasma mobile on it will make it really usable even today
My nexus 7 has an android 11 (official lineage os 18.1) lowered the resolutionn (800x1280) and it works great in 2022.
UA-cam actually disregards the software resolution and uses the hardwares resolution, so even if you change the resolution to something like 400x640, you can still watch videos with the full resolution of the tablet with no quality loss.
I figured that out when I set my amazon fire 7s display to 150x256 🤣
How do you update it? any tip or help?
thanks in advance
The reason to get an updated version of Android is to make sure you're getting the security updates, which I don't think it'll get if it's still on Marshmallow.
You can install custom rom
@@Windows-qq7vj exactly. LineageOS supports the Nexus 7. In the video it's mentioned as if it's ok to stay on Marshmallow though, and that's what I was commenting on.
One of the sexiest tablets ever
I have the silver trim no back camera model.
How to put sim card
3:07 it's due to nexus use 16:10 aspect ratio...in which if you see 16:9 content on this display it will eat 2 Inches for horizontal blackbar
I just remembered i had a hardly used mint Nexus 7 in my cupboard, I've just dug it out, Charged it up and it still works a treat! Not sure what to do with it now! 😂 Is it worth anything?
Mine used to occasionally fail to boot, I had two, and they both eventually had this issue from time to time. For some ungodly reason you gave them a firm knock on the back, it would be able to boot just fine right after. They worked perfectly fine besides that until the newer OSs slowed down their performance, but with the factory settings, they are flawless.
Yeah, it's probably worth about $20!
Wallpaper link please as the one in the description is not working
this was my daily driver.. back then.. to bad tho after just 1 year and few months, the touch screen was dead and cant be used at all.
I was able to temporarily fix the touchscreen by opening the back and reconnecting the daughterboard with the motherboard. The only thing is i had to do that once every a few weeks and it give a lot of wear to the backcase due to repeated prying.
I watched this on my Nexus 7 2013 tablet.... which i'm still using all these years.
Still in great condition!
i am still using it to read mangas & watch videos on it, and the battery is still very good
do you mod your android OS or stock?
@@xandercage5403 stock, it's still fluid cuz i didn't install anything else than a manga reader, UA-cam & Netflix/Crunchyroll
Any suggestion to make N7 great again? Best rom for battery life?
any degoogled one
I Use mine (2012 version) as a multimedia and Sat nav on the bike, it was virtually bricked after an update years ago making it virtually unusable, managed to flash it to lineage and now runs well enough for its use.
Just like mine. 4.0 KitKat was super fast. After update to 6.0.1 it is super slow and almost useless. I use it only for internet radio stations in my workshop now.
I GOT A PANDA NEXUS 7 I NEVER KNEW THE COLOR WAS RARE! ! 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
I can't open Google photos anymore on it.... "Unfortunately, Photos has stopped" is all it states.
Great tablet but for sure go with the 32gb version. It also has USB-OTG so that's somethin to mention.
How can I just set my Nexus to be a clock. How do I leave the screen permanent on.
you can't
I need a sim card for mine. Please help.
Dantdm had that same one
Does anyone have a guide on how to make it work with updated apps? The tablet launches and everything but the Google Play store doesn't work and the apps currently on the tablet can't update either.
mine doesnt work at all. I factory reset it and after it boots as soon as things start updating, its screeches to a halt
Give it a knock on the back if it gets stuck in a dead-end boot cycle. This isn't a joke by the way.
Your know don’t you guys, this will be the form factor of the 2022 ‘new’ smartphone look…..
My Nexus 7 2012 is very slow. Is there a system that would be better than stock android?
Lineage OS
I've used my Nexus7 for an average of about 10 hours a week ever since I got it in 2013 and it's still going strong.
And yes, still running KitKat of course :)
Still using them also .
Replaced broken screen's on a few I've got on Ebay ( 32 gig models ) for like $ 30.00 .
Nexus 7 was KING, why they never made update versions is beyond me.
Surprised to see they stopped at the 7 with all the praise it got
I put Android 7.1 on mine and am using it to control Home Assistant until I can get a replacement (chip shortages and all). But it's very slow on a modern Android version, not that Android 7.1 is very "modern". The battery is absolutely poked, or it is the charging mechanish itself that is the issue. Charging is very very slow taking several days to charge. I hear that is a common issue with the Nexus 7.
Thanks for the rundown, I was curious about downsides of buying it.
On a note . I've torn apart many Nexus 7's and replaced screen's and charge ports . They're not really hard to replace ( I'm not all that Tech inclined ) . I think now it would be harder to find the parts maybe . Check out ( I think it's called ) iFixit . I think they have both 2012 and 2013 teardown instructions .
This was my secret weapon in Shadow gun dead zone
Even back in the day o thought it was too close to the phone screen. Even more do today lol
Back in the day when bezels on phones were thicker I really didn't see it as much. But now oh boy are those bezels thick
still have mine absolute chompion
Mine broke 😢
Anyone having trouble getting the Channel 4 app to work on it? Mine just will not work at all - any help appreciated! I’ve done all the updates, cache clearing, memory tidying etc
It's ok.
Slow as FCK charging.
But overall it's a good tablet.
Battery life on 50% brightness is decent.
Because you aren’t using a powerful enough charger
i use it for thing like netflix disney+, watch some videos on youtube and music
How did you get Netflix to work on it? It keeps saying that Netflix no longer supports this version for me :(
@@katachi8500 idk
UA-cam doesn't work
Google should have refined this. Modern tech would have been great in a design similar to that tablet.
yes, retain most of the design but with state-of-the-art hardware
@@BuriBuriZ i think so. Better than the new monstracity we have now
@@mmartinisgreat compare this nexus with low budget tablet nowadays is an insult to nexus. I'm still comfortable using this tablet for everyday use, mostly for reading and multimedia.
@@BuriBuriZ shiiit the family dog ate ours. Only reason we don't use it
Don't get me wrong, you say 'don't get me wrong' a lot. Otherwise, good job on the video
Now it just looks like a modern smartphone LOL
Didn’t google sell this at a loss? I had this and the screen was amazing at the time. I loved this tablet.
They didn't make much money on it no.....
Downloaded Ubuntu to my Nexus 7 and brought the little guy back to life.
Mine was slow when new....slow a few years ago...and super slow now. Is there any way to refresh this thing and make it usable? This device was what made me abandon all Android OS devices and go iOS
@Scott Lynn is there a tutorial to wipe/redo this thing and make is usable?
@zbanded I don't see how they get away with you paying for a game and not being able to play it because of invalid license
Kinda of a shame Android tablets for the most part didn’t take off. Now we only have few expensive models from Samsung and a few other brands. I remember putting so many hours of use on this one it’s pretty nostalgic I remember it being a big deal back then
Yea I have a Samsung phone (S21) and love it but Samsung tablets are so overpriced you either get super low end or super high end (still overpriced) but there's no middle ground
No it's okay, I bought a Pixel 4a from someone who used it for 2 weeks and then bought something else, it will do me for now, can't go back to older screens now.
Watching this on a N7 in 24
but the storage is. just have 11gb ?
16 gb system takes up a bit or 32gb
Love my Nexus 7 and so sad it can no longer update anything Google because they abandoned it as unsafe on net. Someone should be able to make it safe. My original from early 2013 still works perfectly and I have bought other tablets since Google stopped supporting it and none of them are as good. I love tablets for reading books and want them small and light. Nexus 7 is perfect and there is simply nothing else available. Don't want to pay over $1000 for a giant phone which is not quite as big and I don't want my tablet to make phone calls - just get on the
net, get books to read, play music (my own) so I can practice, access stuff on net. If anyone has any ideas what programs to use that will work I would love to know about them. I think this tablet is probably good for another 10 years. And all the other tablets are really annoying and heavy and clunky - all of them!! So sad that the best tech is always abandoned instead of improved.
Wish they still made decent 7 or 8” Android tablets. My Nexus 7 died years ago, and I think I might end up buying the new iPad Mini.
My nexus 7 only lasts 1 hour and the charing is suuuuuuuper slow
Use another charging socket and cable your socket must habe 2Amps
Every time I look into buying a new android tablet and the features ( and crap/ bloatware) I end up buying an old nexus 7 on ebay for 50 dollars. The only problem I have is you cant move files to the PC through the micro usb ( which is why im watching this vid for work arounds).
Install x-plore, then u can access windows PC via WiFi....copy/move files....you might have to manually install it if it doesn't see it on the play store
you absolutely can move photos and movies
@@chrisharris8515 it doesnt work on windows 10 and 11. its spotty when it works and when it doesnt.
@@doro626 i stayed with windows 7 😂 also chrome works too with it
pause... please pause from time to time
Dang... How am I the first to point out that it has 323 PPI, not 232? You undersold it by a HUGE amount! There are pretty much no tablets with that high of a PPI today, and sadly way too many with around 232.
323.45* not 323
can it run albion online?
i think this tablet is amazing for a 2013 tablets.. but roblox lag and roblox is a little game
Yo tube esta tablet en 2013
Does it fit on pant pocket
Depends on your pants size
If big pants
Yes
i tried a factory reset (which I've done before) but now it is plagued by google error messages as I try to start it up. really puzzled about how I'm going to get it running.
I got play working but the device is very very slow:(
Hey All ,
I still use Nexus 7's today .
I've had luck going in and wiping the cache when booting ,, and then reset .
I think you get there by holding the power and volume down ( or up ) at the same time .
UA-cam videos out there for this .
Hope this might help you .
im still trying to sort my nexus 7 out, its so sluggish, takes ages to do anything, trying to watch a 720 video, just stutters like crazy, what can i do, anyone got any links?
Change your battery. Being a very old tablet it's battery may have been degraded thus not providing enough power for the tablet
@@fahadmansuri i sorted it, i flashed lineage 14.1 onto it with beangapps, gave it a long charge and now works fine, even plays 720 vids no problem, charge stays aswell, i bought it brand new, for £30 from the range only 3 months ago
Using it right now to watch this. Flashed Lineage 16
Is that custom rom running gapps well bro?
@@Alinoviajuni2018 yes it is.
@@jipe3213 great.. can u give me pointer to get Lineage 16? or maybe i can get it on XDA?
Oh it wasn't surprising that it can't run pubg
What about pubg game ?
Up until the 11” M1 iPad Pro, I referred to the Nexus 7 as my favorite tech device of all time.
Can it run genshin impact
No lol
My 3yo phone can barely run Genshin.
Bezels for years... lol
