@@belindacoba5158 I don't even worry about that anymore-- because chances are I'm gonna spill SOMETHING all over it, so it'll be splotchy sooner or later anyway. I tend to wear a lot of loud busy prints or black. :)
does the dye come off significantly in the wash or is it just like normal washing? I suppose if it were that big of a deal i would just hand wash it separately but i have never dyed any garment so i thought id inquire
@@whiskerbiscuit6209 it depends on the dye, the base and the process. If you don't keep the item under heat for long enough, the dye might run. Ideally you should keep the item under heat between 20-40 minutes to make sure it sets. If we're talking about acid dyes, that is, like the one in this video, with the wool. Other dyes have other requirements. But dark colors will always run, unless on a synthetic base (which you can't realistically dye at home anyway).
can't believe what a difference the altered sleeve on the floral dress makes - magic! and it's great to see you could make that custom sweater work by dyeing it, i'd never get any use out of a red knit either 😂
Thank you Chae! I was just so glad it came out an even shade that, I didn't care what color it resulted in as long as I didn't tie dye or felt it, but of course black is perfect for me 🖤
I'm a knitter, and my anxiety spiked when you started explaining the sweater flip, but I'm so glad it turned out well. Handwork deserves to be used and loved, and it's great to see this piece escape the closet-lurker fate.
One thing that vintage Laura Ashley really has going for it, is that they never skimped on fabric. I have a couple of 80s dresses and I love the fullness of the skirts.
This may be a weird comment...but my anxiety has been so bad the last couple of weeks, but watching your video I just thought to myself “her voice is so soothing” lol like it conveys emotion but not over the top like so many you tubers. It’s like a perfect business/ powerful tone type of voice I aspire to have. That’s it lol
She’s has a retro radio-hostess voice, very melodic and steady. I can completely relate! I put on vids from my favorite creators with soothing voices whenever I’m anxious or feeling useless.
OMG I'm not the only person who loves her voice and will frequently put her older, longer videos on to help me sleep. NO I am not saying she is boring, quite the reverse as I cannot wait to watch new video content.
Walking foot - yes. Baste - yes. Also, greatly reduce the pressure on your presser foot and use a lot of pins on an angle instead of straight across the sewing line. Hold the fabric taut at the front and back of the machine as it feeds under the foot. Some have success with sulky temporary spray adhesive, but be careful of overspray. I've tried using tissue paper sandwiched in between layers and in between the velvet and the machine - a trick I learned when sewing vinyl; the paper becomes perforated by the stitches and tears away after sewing . Change needles often, and doubly often if the velvet is real silk, and keep a vacuum handy close by, ready to pull out some of the loose pile lint from the machine as you sew, as that stuff gums up the works very, very quickly.
As one of the people who likely nagged you into overdying that gorgeous handknit sweater 😅 I'm SO glad it turned out so well, it looks just as gorgeous, but even more goth 😁🤌
velvet - yes to basting and walking foot - and also know how to lower the pressure on your pressure foot. It helps. All of the projects came out well - and even if I liked the red sweater - you'll wear it more now, and isn't that the point of having clothes? it's easy to get a low shank walking foot and other things for your cute little 99k.
I never did find a walking foot attachment to fit my machine (a Pfaff 1469) but Elna made a snap-on roller foot that fit and it helped enormously with fabrics such as velvet.
Well I love the dye job, it makes that dress perfect on you. I didn't much care for the original version, but once it was dyed it became, yes I am saying it again, perfect. The same goes for the skirt, looks much better after the color change. I prefer darker colors too, so yeah, looks great. Now the red sweater was great but it should be all about what makes you happy and dyeing it has obviously done that for you, so cheers! Thank you for another entertaining video, stay safe and I will be watching for your next upload.
I love the murky green paisley and the toned down teal. As a knitter who has often dyed and over dyed yarn with food colours I had to laugh at the black sweater. It's often a complete surprise what one ends up with, it's great that it worked out so well in your favour!
I'm so happy that you were finally able to evolve that Laura Ashley dress into something perfect for you. I loved it when you thrifted it, but was sad that it just couldn't evolve into something better but now it's amazing! All of the alterations are amazing! Thank you for sharing them.
I love seeing the transformation on these projects. It's incredible how much of a difference a few alterations make and all of a sudden you have a completely new garment!
10 out of 10 for all your redo garments. I am a fiber dyer and I am here to tell you that black is a difficult color to achieve. Often it is blotchy, or brownish, or breaks, or greyish...you did good! 😉 I was cringing at the Rit as you described what you had in mind, because it often dulls the item. I think that dulling effect is exactly what that dress needed. Angling that sleeve lifted your bust and narrowed your waist. I think we forget about how little tweaks can make such a huge difference. 🌈🌈🦋🦋
Love everything you've altered. Amazing how just shortening sleeves made such a flattering difference. And I'm looking forward to you making the wide legged velvet trousers!!! 😂😂😂😘
I loved every single redo! Especially the red to black sweater! It's gorgeous! And the paisley dress! 3rd favorite is the darker teal skirt! Awesome remakes! 😁
Ok, you have unlocked such a persistent problem for me! I have never quite been able to figure out why a mid-upper arm sleeve feels weirdly unflattering...it's because that's also the widest part of my bust! I do tend to prefer clothing with sleeves, but I think I need to search for either a shorter OR longer sleeve, not mid-upper arm. Two minutes into this video and already the epiphanies are coming through. Thank you!
10's, 10's, 10's across the board! And yes, we do love an alteration or thrift-flip video! It's awfully good inspiration (and perhaps motivation) for your own wardrobe.
🤩🤩 The murky paisley! The velvet dress makeover! That accidentally, beautifully even, goth queen sweater! I squealed with delight when you revealed it. The smile on your face in that shot shows how pleased you were 😁 Thank you for another wonderful video!
Love all of these re-fashions, they look great. The Laura Ashley dress certainly looks more sultry now, which is never a bad thing. Thank you for sharing these projects with us.
Wow Bianca, The yellow blouse you're wearing is stunning on you. I would like watching you sewing a blouse like this with a beautifull bow. Thank you for all your videos.
Bravo!! 👏👏👏👏😃 I absolutely LOVE how the black velvet dress turned out! I remember what a pain fixing that dress was for you 😬😅 But it turned out great!! And you look Fabulous!👍🤗💖

What fun! To watch, at least. 🙄 The projects all came out better. I love the muted paisley dress, just my jam, too. The black sweater is AMAZING. But I think my favorite flip is the velvet dress, sooooo chic. It fits you like a glove now, and is just elegant. Great job.

I’m amazed at the difference the sleeve alteration made on the 80s does 40s dress. I, too, find cap and short sleeves tricky on the busty figure, but I liked how you explained the silhouette shape difference for your figure. And the dye job results are remarkable, especially turning bright red to solid black. They all make me want to try out dying alterations.
Oh, excellent job, dear! {sneaks in, yoinks lovely red sweater and leaves plain black sweater in its place -- shhh, she'll never notice} The black velvet came out extraordinarily fetching! Vampy in a ne'er do well sort of way. And the sleeves of the first -- who could guess that such a small thing could make all the difference. Hurrah! Stay warm.
All beautifully done! And much more flattering to your figure and skin tone. You really know yourself and your aesthetic and how to create items that work perfectly
I learned a lot from this. Your description of why the first dress didn't work and why the remake of it does work was enlightening, and I will be making use of this info. Sometimes it is hard to analyze why something you bought and liked does not work on your body the way you wanted it to, and your explanation makes perfect sense. Also changing the color is a good fix for those pieces that you really like, or spent a bunch of money on, and would like to keep. If the cost of a box of dye can make it work, that's wonderful. We all want that perfect wardrobe made of pieces that we love, and these ideas go a long way to helping you get that.
I love that muted paisley!
Thank you Jo!
Yes ! So flattering ! Great idea !!!
I wouldn't have thought that the pattern would show through like that. It really is stunning
Yes, it's still gorgeous and does suit much better
