I went to brighton today for a day out with the family. Seeing that i thought it was an unfinished construction , but being told it was a burnt down peir , my heart melted. The only thing left was the last bits of metal . You could see it from the observational tower , beach and streets. Bits are still falling off to this day. Whoever or whatever started that fire really changed my views.
I cant believe the West Piers nearly gone. Ive been fascinated with the pier since i was young & even made a very big model of it as a school project. The Trust is a joke, they kept all the money for themselves & more happy seeing it die. I really cant believe there is no hope for the pier now. Goodbye old girl.
As a young child my parents brought my brother and myself to Sussex for a holiday and we ended up coming to Brighton. We walked along the west pier taking In the sights and sounds of all the activities going on. Dad took some photos of us kids on the pier. Even at such a young age I was fascinated by the architecture of the buildings. My heart sank years later as the pier declined then the first fire came. Imo that was no accident just like the second fire too. I have theories but no proof yet, circumstantial evidence is not hard to come by. Feigned sadness from 'close by' to me says more than anything else. Now to see what little is left and the objections to building a brand new pier to me is history demolished for others greed. How wonderful would it be to construct a similar pier to when the west pier first opened and concert halls added. The council I'm sure would see it differently, wouldn't want to upset the opposition now would they. RiP west pier. A truly magnificent structure now a distant memory.
The first Grade I Building in the UK (Same as Buckingham Palace) and they let it die that way, what a shame. I'm not from the UK but i feel sorry for that iconic building.

Went to Brighton for 2 days yesterday, never really knew what this was and just thought it was art or something. Knowing what it is now has made my heart sink, it must've been beautiful and it's terrible to see it looking how it is today
you should see our victorian arches. our council has let them go to absolute rot and waste, and they were built during victorian times. brighton council is utter shite
A number of years ago I used to windsurf passed the end of the West Pier. There was a gnome on the end fishing into the sea. Who knows how it caught fire, but if it was arson then it was probably someone who had an interest in the rebuilding not going ahead ;)
Me too. It was such a beautiful building. I used to love watching the Starlings fly around it. There was talk of it being restored and then it goes up in flames. People saw a boat driving away from it, and fingers were pointed at the Palace Pier owners. They didn't want the competition so burnt it down. There is no other way for it to catch fire other than it being arson. I doubt a pigeon did it.
I live in brighton and although it is very sad it gone it does look very cool but this is where my parents met and they were so sad when it got burnt down
I went there when I was young and the bridge had gone but the main body remained. Its heartbreaking to see just the empty frame. I also used to get sad about Birnbeck Pier at Weston Super Mare and hope one day that might get restored
HI, I'm a student at Brighton Film School. I'm doing a school project documentary about West Pier. Can I use this footage in my documentary. I would appreciate it. It'll only be on the schools website and not for commercial use. Many Thanks!
Very melancholy watching this. Time passes way too quickly, my grandparents would have certainly visited that pier as they lived not too far away after the war and into the 70s and it makes you think of others like them. And to think that at the time, there were two fires, and the over more time, two storms which confirmed the West Piers fate. Isn’t it strange - An argument with the Palace Pier over unfair competition with the European courts and the council not having the money to fix it. Makes it all seem a little dodgy and makes the fires appear even more questionable. Although isn’t it funny how money was found not to fix the west pier but to put a viewing tower on the entry site of the old west pier and in its place (i360) costing millions more today and making a loss they almost went bankrupt! Perhaps a second pier with different facilities on it to the other would have proved to be far more enjoyable (and profitable) over time compared to the floating sky donut that allows you to see the sea, and the clubs smoking roofs from a great height….
My Great uncle was a firefighter for brighton and hove and he was by the building and he said that hed never seen so much smoke! With his 2 men he was able put quater of the fire down but the sea fighters did the rest anyways.

Alex Mason just go to the Brighton pier
Sabir Hussain Well you could, but many people have fond memories of this one and prefer the design
Every time I walk down the pavement of the road, I always take a glare at the pier, and think about what could've happened if they rebuilt it
It was an electrical fire i believe
@@AI_dente Surely the electric would’ve been cut off when the pier closed in the 70’s.

I think the reason why the pire close bc it was too old
And they were planing to rebuild it
@@Fizz_studios120 nah they closed the pier because it was getting a bit old and dangerous to be on
A shame to let that beautiful historic building vacant, so it's no surprise a arsonist had set fire there. Sad... Thx for sharing!

One Nil to the bad people.....That music is so beautiful,,,,makes me tearful !!
Many seaside fires seem to have happened in the early 2000’s for some reason.
It would cost them £1m to preserve it now in its current fragile state. They really need to do something or this will be the end of the Old Lady.

Because they wanted another viewing point and they got rid of the Brighton wheel
