"I Can't Help It" is one of my all time favorites off of this album. So interesting how music hits people differently.

I Can't Help It is my favorite song on the album. I first listened to the entire Off The Wall album in 1992 when I was ten. now yes, I heard the bigger hits from this album on the radio throughout my then ten years and repeatedly listened to the entirety of the Thriller, Bad and Dangerous albums first, but I never had the opportunity to hear this album. I listened to my mom and dad's LP of Off The Wall and was blown away. it was my first venture into Michael's music before Thriller and Bad. and of all the songs on the album, Off The Wall and I Can't Help It were the ones I was most excited to hear during future playbacks of the album [more so I Can't Help It]. the smooth latin inspired instrumentation kept me coming back. it is not a song for the masses. it is a secret gem for us hardcore fans. and we love it. ;)

Thanks for your writeup friend! That is an awesome story, and that is a cool story how you were introduced to this record after the more popular ones. This was my first introduction to MJ and I was not disappointed, and have since listened to Thriller and think OTW is better overall. Though I don't dislike I Can't Help It, it didn't grip me like it did for you but from your high praise I'm going to spin it a few more times :) Thanks for watching!

This album brings back the Disco memories and roller skating. Around this time is when Michael Jackson was in The Wiz so that was pretty good too. Favorite song on this album is the title track and also like Rock with you and Don't Stop Til You Get Enough

Yes, 'Off The Wall' is a particularly strong selection of songs which are immaculately played, and produced. The musicianship and very importantly Michael Jackson's voice, were very impressive indeed. In the autumn of 1979 around the time of 'Off The Wall's album release, there was a huge promotional campaign in terms of posters and billboards here in the UK. I was 13 at the time and pretty much everywhere i went in town Michael face could be seen peering down from 'Off The Wall' cover. The quality of the album certainly lived up to the hype, too. One must remember this first solo album release by Jackson as an adult, was a little before the days of MTV, and when the mass audience did not have the luxury of a video recorder, so although there were promo clips to some of those single releases, the visuals were not such a big selling point as in later years. They were straight performances, too, rather than the storyboard variety, although the first single 'Don't Stop Till You Get Enough' with special effects and multiple Michael's dancing was quite eye catching. That first single release previously mentioned remains my favourite moment of the album, followed by 'Rock With You'. Those two songs can definitely hold their own with any of the later Jackson single releases. This album's disco/soul influences are perhaps the final time on his solo recordings, Michael is performing purely as a 'soul' singer, and i actually prefer him here to the harder edged more attitude driven vocals he increasingly began to display in later years. His vocals here have a sensitivity, and the mood of the album primarily is quite smooth and seductive, even with the sometimes funky rhythms. Jackson's own songwriting skills, although not running through all the tracks on the album, are impressive, and especially on "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough", and also Rod Temperton contributes a few key tracks, including the title song. Quincy Jones production and generally effective guiding hand deserve acknowledgement, too. If there is a slight drawback it is that i'm not overly impressed by Michael's cover of Paul McCartney's "Girlfriend". One could also argue the song "She's Out Of My Life" is slightly overwrought in its sentimentality, but also this track features one of the most impressively heartfelt vocals in ballad form, in Michael's career, so maybe that can be excused. As mentioned previously, in this period before the advent of MTV, Jackson's success pretty much rested on the quality of the contents on this album. There was no opportunity of dressing up the less inspiring, by the use of some flash video, which is on repeated play daily. In some ways that may be why this album as a whole is Michael's most listenable, and least gimmicky. There is a sincerity to it sometimes lacking in his later output. Also it is a little underrated compared with the follow up, Thriller, the later of which managed to more fully exploit the new medium of MTV, to assist sales. I think 'Off The Wall' ultimately is Michael's best album. 9/10.

I think it's the silky vocals (especially at the end of each hook), scatting and nostalgia from those horns that comes with I Can't Help It that makes it a top choice for many.

Just got this album’s CD and finally listened to the record all the way through (I had heard about half of the songs beforehand)
I think the song is near perfect until “I Can’t Help It”. It’s not a bad song by any means but it feels like the first actual “filler” track.
All in all it’s a fantastic album. My favorite MJ album always changes depending on the day.
When I’m feelin happy it’s Off the Wall or Thriller. When I’m feelin “tough” I go with Bad. When I feel like getting experimental I go with Dangerous. When I’m feeling emotional it’s History.
I still gotta listen to Invincible all the way through, though. Then I’ll be complete with his adult discography.

You did not later hear Michael laugh like he does on Get On The Floor. :) The bassist and composer of the song is Louis Johnson, famous also from Johnson Brothers (Stomp ! was a huge hit for them) and top notch session musician. He got a nickname "Thunderthumbs" for his style of playing.

Reactions To The Classic, s Great video, i had a lot of fun listening to your guys' review.Im wondering if you'll be doing Thriller next? And there something i want to correct. In the video, it is said that michael became the frontman, or something, of the Jackson 5 when he was 11, he was actually 5 years old. He and his brothers got signed to Mowtown Records when he was 11.

She's Out of My Life is the best song for me, I also like the other famous songs Don't Stop, Off The Wall and Rock With You. But the other tracks are much more filler for me and I don't look forward to them that much even if they are well performed and in a consistent style. Thriller has more of a consistent pop sensibility and that's why it did so well.
