Welcome to beautiful Aberdeenshire, I'm a native to Buchan and have spent my life exploring here and all over Scotland and I'm still discovering amazing places and sights. Truly a magical place...I'm glad you enjoy it too.
Dunnottar, that's my family's old place 😊 My mum was a Keith, descended from a son of Robert Dunnottar, the Rev. James Keith, Colonial clergy, who sailed to America from Aberdeen in 1640s to set up a parish at Bridgewater Massachusetts where his parsonage still stands 😊 I've read he "filled New England with Keiths" including my Grampa Bill's greatgreatgreats😊 I never knew any of this until I retired in 2019 and jumped into Ancestry during Covid.I so wish my mum were still around to know it too, she'd have loved it!❤ Thanks for posting.
Thank you for this lovely post! I'm Jamaican and my 3rd Great Grand-Father, Anson and his Brother, Edgar, migrated to Jamaica in the 1700s from Aberdeenshire. I hope to visit one day.
I'm an Australian. Born and raised in Melbourne. My mum came from country Victoria. Her dad, my maternal grandfather, was born in Aberdeenshire Scotland. It's a very important part of my family heritage
As an Aberdeen loon who left 55 years ago to live in Australia, this video has brought back many happy memories of my childhood there. I was born in Fittie, moved to Orchard St, lived in a prefab in Tillydrone and played in the grounds of St Machers Cathedral. Then on to Kincorth to Secondary school at Kaimhill. I remember well so many of the places you have shown here. Many thanks.
I agree Slains Castle is well worth the trip. We had the whole place to ourselves the day we visited in Sep 2019. And Dunnottar is spectacular. It may be my favorite of all the castles we visited in northeast Scotland.
One of the first videos I have seen on Aberdeenshire made by an outsider without bias, and very well done. I am from NE Scotland but lived all over, as far as Inverness, I lived close to Corse Castle ruin in a place called Cushnie for about 15 years, that castle is unfortunately becoming a bit too unstable and will likely have a big collapse in a decade or so. If you carry on from Corse Castle towards Tarland there is a great view over the Cromar valley towards the mountains of Lochnaggar, Mount Keen, Morvern and Clachnaben, great area for walkers and mountain bikers. Craigiever Castle is also an attractive little keep close to Corse Castle ruin. If you like outdoor pursuits like kayaking, gliding, shooting, fishing, hill walking, mountain biking, climbing and even wind surfing (plenty wind on the North Sea but cold) Aberdeenshire caters for all of it. Great thing is we have plenty of space and it is not crowded
I was born in Ellon in 1960 - but only because Peterhead didn't have a maternity hospital then! Although I left the area in 1973 I'm still a "Buchan Loon" - my attachment to North East Scotland is very strong. I had a feeling Slains might be your fav spot. My own children are in their 30s now and I took them to Slains from an early age. During our infrequent visits now from our homes in Midlothian, a visit to Slains is always on our list. Thank you for posting such an interesting, high quality, video.
Thankyou for such great suggestions of places to visit in Aberdeenshire. We're looking at coming to Scotland in August '25 and have been wondering where to stay and what to see and I was considering this area as a base, that's how I found your video, thank you for your time.
Great. I'm glad the video has been helpful. You will love Aberdeenshire. I have one more video I made about the shire with 10 more places (and less castles). That may be helpful... Enjoy!
Thank you so much for these videos. We Have managed to visit 5 of the places in this trip and they have all been spectacular! Have visited Aberdeenshire for many years but had never seen any of these magical places. Sincere thanks for making these videos, you have made this trip to Scotland the best holiday ever. Really appreciate you taking the time to share these hidden gems. Hope the move back to Texas goes well. Best wishes Lyndon and Susie
Thanks Lyndon and Susie. I’m so glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for your kind words. I’m hoping to put together a specific video for Aberdeen city also… Thanks again!
Wow! So glad to see that slains is your favorite. My dream is to see that castle in person. It was once owned by clan Hay once upon a time ago and is a big part of our heritage. I am a Hay. My grandfather moved from Scotland 70 years ago. Awesome video, all of aberdeenshire looks amazing and you presented it very well!
My name is Dustin Keith. My 18th great grandfather built the first stone keep at Dunnottar. I was fortunate enough to visit in 2019 and I’m going back this September. This video is absolutely amazing. I think you so much for taking the time and putting it together, I’m going to visit every location!
Thanks for the message Dustin. I'm glad you enjoyed the video... I have another one that has less castles and more landscapes. Enjoy your trip!

Man great video and channel. We stay here aswell and loved this video. Found places we have never ever been too and I have stayed here for 30 years thank you
If you haven't already been, I'd suggest the view at Gannochy gorge, which is just a few minutes drive before Edzell if coming from the Fettercairn direction. It's beautiful in autumn - a red carpet of leaves. Also has a nice walk. In warmer times, also nice to visit Crovie village (it's really a hamlet, a short row of houses literally at the beach) up at the far most north of Aberdeenshire.
Excellent video!! I would love to visit as I love grand old buildings. Some of my wife’s ancestors were killed in the Battle of Aberdeen in 1644. We live in the US.
I lived in Aberdeenshire for 10 years and never knew many of these places existed. We take things for granted too much. I read that there was once 2-3000 castles in Scotland. 🎉 Thanks for posting and hope you and your family come back one day. 😇🥳🤣
I visited Slains Castle by chance as i had some time due to a change in my flight time back home. I must ssy that it was special, we were the only ones visiting it and it was so peaceful in contrast to the rough sea below. We parked in a small parking space and walked through a small forest to get to it. Recommend to visit. We also visited the Stonehaven Castle it is nice but crowded with tourists.
That was a fantastic guide to sights around Aberdeen. I'm planning a visit to Scotland and am weighing up where to go and Aberdeen was on my maybe but you could probably pass it up list. After seeing this I think it's moving to my yeah going here list
I’m glad to hear this… Most tourism and promotion for Scotland seems to focus on central Scotland, the Higlands and Skye. But Aberdeenshire has a lot too offer including more castles per acre than anywhere else in the British Isles AND more sunshine per year than the rest of Scotland. I hope you visit and enjoy!

Nice to see my local area through the eyes of someone new to the area. Great shots from the drone, well done Also try walking the coastal path north of Slains Castle and visit The Bullers o' Buchan where the sea has cut into the cliffs in a very dramatic way (again take care near the edge) It's another couple of miles but there's a car park there as well.
Wondering about permissions to do the fly overs. The HES demands to request a permission from them to use UAS on their cared of premises. Also about a private property (that still is in use)…
Thanks. There are MANY other great castles (like Drum) that I didn't get a chance to visit or film with the drone. Aberdeenshire is a great place to explore!
Great video, i wonder, have you been to any of the pre-historic stone circles in Aberdeenshire ? I have read somewhere that NE Scotland has the highest concentration of stone circles anywhere in the world. East Aquhorthies ( near Inverurie) is one i would recommend p.s. good luck with the pronounciation of it :D
I’d add Glentanar, Invercauld Estate, Ballater, Gardenstown, in fact too many nice places to visit As I’m Aberdeen born and bred it sometimes takes a video like this to get me out visiting again. Thanks.

The North Sea where I grew up in between 1957 until 1989 was so awe inspiring. Live in London but when I travel home I deliberately take the train from Kings Cross to Aberdeen. From about Edinburgh to Aberdeen you have the North Sea all the way on your right. So when you book tickets make sure you sit on the right going north and left travelling south. Born in Aberdeen. Oh I loved the video but be careful it is a SEA not an OCEAN which you describe near the end. It is the North Sea. Great video. Oceans are ATLANTIC, PACIFIC. INDIAN. ARCTIC, SOUTHERN OCEAN. I suppose you could add one more; BILLY OCEAN. 😜😜😜Some argue you can break up the Atlantic and Pacific into North and South each. Geography lesson over. I used to have a nickname. MISTER-KNOW-IT-ALL LOL😊😊😊😊😊Drive my wife and family and friends bonkers.
