    All wheel drive and four wheel drive, they both drive all four wheels on a car or truck, so they must be pretty much the same, right? Well, not really. The similarities end somewhere after driving more than two wheels! Check out this video, and Len will tell you all about it!

    Thanks - what does then both differential do in 4x4 mode . You said its dangerous to drive in grippy conditions , because of possible binding and damage transfer case, but isn't it differential designed to prevent that? I cannot get the point where danger comes if both differential are there and axels are not locket. Please explain.

    I own AWD and 4X4, I like 4x4 better i like that you can turn it off when not in use and save your transfer case, AWD is great for rain and snow but i find it is a bit loud you hear the transfer case all the time and turning is not the same but it is great also perfect for winter driving.

    Thanks, now I understand a lot better. What about the Kia Sportage, that seems to be both AWD but you can then lick the differential and it seems to then function as as 4WD. I drive a lot of dirt roads that are mud soup when it rains. Which would be better?

    I have a question that I have not been able to find an answer to anywhere. I have a 2005 Ecalade AWD Both front tires have the same amount of side to side play, I have replaced both tie rods and both upper and lower ball joints the bushings in the control arms have no play. The wheel bearings have no play and are relatively new. I can't see ant play in the center link I got a great deal on this vehicle and it's in excellent condition but I can't figure this out any ideas? Thanks for all the great videos you guys have taught me a lot and are my go to for repairs.

  • @LiDong
    @LiDong 3 роки тому +9

    Part-time 4WD=automatically mechanically locked center differential, forcing 50% power to front 2 wheels and 50% to back 2 wheels. If all differentials are locked, then mechanically 25% to each wheel. AWD cannot lock differentials but applies brakes to get traction, thus loses total power output (by braking). Not a problem on gravel roads, but in muds like farms, big difference.

    What is the easiest way to figure out if you're all wheel drive is actually working correctly? I'll give you an example I was up in the snow the other day and I parked at my friend's house. Then I ended up getting ready to leave the next morning and I couldn't get out I was stuck because there was a lot of ice underneath the rear tires because the way the snow was melting and then refreezing. Something I noticed is that the only tires that were spinning when my all wheel drive was engaged was the rear tires because I was able to see a bunch of stuff flinging up from the back but when I looked at the front there was nothing happening on either side I tried engaging my four-wheel drive and that didn't work either. So I'm not entirely sure what's going on. It's a 2001 Dodge Durango 5.9 RT with an electronic switch that goes from all wheel drive to 4 wheel high to four wheel low but it's always in all-wheel drive unless I decided to switch it.

    • @jimjungle1397
      @jimjungle1397 Рік тому

      Some vehicles require reversing, driving in reverse, backing up, after switching back to 2WD. You may need to back up until it switches off the 4WD. Switch the lever to 2WH first while standing still, then back up in reverse. Do this some place where you have a lot of distance to back up.

    Not all limited slips use clutches. Eaton makes the true track limited slip which uses gears. And even a locker will ratchet for turning if not under power. It uses cogs. Both differentials are damn near indestructible. Most all new four-wheel drives today are soft. In the old days we got out and disengage the hubs on the front axle to save wear and tear and fuel. Then they came out with the auto locking hubs. Today there is no option they just spin.
    The fact I haven't bought a new vehicle in over 30 years doesn't make me bitter. It only means I have dozens of classic vehicles that draw more attention than say a new Vet or Raptor.
    And saving that 30 30-50 Grand allows me to do a whole lot of playing.

  • @ApocGuy
    @ApocGuy Рік тому

    and then you have Lada Niva, which is full time 4WD with lockable center differential :P all that car needed is good disel engine and both lockers.

  • @petergerdes1094
    @petergerdes1094 3 роки тому

    I know I'm nitpicking but it doesn't send the same amount of power to all four wheels. It sends the same amount oof torque. Power is just energy per unit time so if it sent the same amount of power to all four wheels they would all do the same amount of work during any period of time. Work is force times distance so consider the case where one wheel spins freely and the other four are unable to overcome friction (e.g one wheel is on slippery ice). Distance traveled by the 3 stationary wheels is 0 so too is the total energy imparted but the spinning wheel puts energy into both it's angular velocity and overcoming the drag from friction.
    Practically just observe that if 3 wheels are totally still and the fourth is slipping only the last tire warms up because it's the only one receiving any power.
