- NOCO Genius2 Charger demonstration and initial review. This is both a conventional charger and a trickle charger, maintainer and desulphater. NOT A FAST CHARGER but a thorough charger for maintaining battery health.

Mine doesn't seem to do anything at all when it's plugged in. Shouldn't I see a steady green if the battery is fully charged?
@@Landrew0 Battery may be so low it is not recognizing it. Hold the section button down for 7 seconds and it will go into "force" mode. Look for video on Force Mode...
I was looking for a basic "How to use" manual and found your video. It's extremely helpful, but you didn't mention how long the battery took to charge. Other than that, fantastic video. Thank you SO much!!!! My dead car (-37C outside) is now charging away. :)

About the noco genius 2 about 2 months ago I was actually looking for the local portable charger but now my car is sitting and it brought back to life my battery instantly or not instantly but overnight and it was amazing so great product glad I kept it

You can save yourself a lot of aggravation if you connect to the battery with the ring terminals. The clips are notoriously unreliable, and tend to lose connection after a few weeks.

Question: I just bought one and it charge up my battery just fine. NOW ... I want to permanently install it but how do I mount it to the side posts? The clip on ends will likely shake off.
Agreed the alligator style clip wont work in that case. I would leave the alligator clips off (the video at about the 1 min mark shows how they are connected/disconnected) and instead install NOCO's eyelet adapter and use that for your permanent install:

I hope others are having better luck with this "genius" than I am. Tried charging a slightly discharged 12V car battery using a Genius1 , but after making connections the charger will not cycle through the various modes (impossible to select 12V). If I use the "force mode" by pressing on the mode button for 5+ seconds, and then select 12V, the unit begins flashing re-green-red-green, etc, then returns to standby. Extremely frustrating. Will purchase a different brand.
Sounds like you received a bad unit, might be worth trying to exchange at the place you bought it. Hopefully you have better luck in the future

No risk unplugging it or plugging in the charger with the cables hooked up to the car battery. In fact the owners manual recommends hooking up to the battery first then plugging the charger into an electrical outlet.
I just got this Genius 2. The 12v battery on my Leaf was suddenly dead this morning. But after charging 10 hours, it still showing 25%… Did I got a faulty one?
Since the Leaf does such a great job maintaining the 12V battery, I would suspect your you 12v has reached it's end of life (especially if it is more than 5 years old). However, the Genius 2 is not a very fast charger compared to it's bigger brothers (e.g. Genius 5, 10 and 25), and in my experience it takes a couple of days to fully charge so it also might just need more time.
Defective NOCO units are definitely a thing though, I have had to return one of there jumpstarters, so that is not out of the realm of possibility.

I have a beginner question: where do I plug the AC if I'm on the road and my battery is dead?
Hello, good question. So this is a trickle charger so it won't do you much good if you are on the road with a dead battery unless you have access to an AC 120V outlet (which is unlikely on the road). Even then will take several hours of charger to be able to stat. For side of the road jumpstarts (instant starting) I recommend the Genius Boost jumpstarters:

Purchased for use in a emergency power generator. Has electric start with a car battery. But no charging system. So…. Hope this does the job of keeping the battery charged.
Nice, it should do the job. We've had ours about 8 months and no complaints, we leave it on a vehicle we almost never drive 24/7.

I am planning on installing one in my car to help with very cold winter start. I plan to put this on a 2 plug extension cord with my block heater. My question is; when I plug my blockheater+charger for the night am I going to have to pop the hood and press start on the charger everytime or it is going to start automatically when plugged like my block heater?
Mine returns to the same mode it was in every time I plug it in. So if I have it charging 12V it will remember that and return to 12v charge when plugged in again. So I would think you wouldn't need to pop the hood everytime.
Shorter answer from the manual: "Auto-Memory: The Charger has built in auto-memory and will return to the last charge mode when connected."

Without a battery pack, how long do you think does it take to charge up, one video showed it took like 2 days?
Its 2 amps an hour, an average battery has 48 amps so its around 24h to full charge it
Agreed with @P-hoes it depends on the amphour rating of the battery. I've seen it take anywhere between 1 day to about 2.5 days depending on how deep the discharge is and battery amphour rating.
On some batteries, , desulphater mode startes and on others not.... This charger is very strange. How to start desulphater mode manually?
I don't think this model allows you to start a manual desulfate. It doesn't allo the user that level of control.
Can you use this with the battery still in the car outside in winter or do I have to take the battery out and into the house??
Yup, you can use one the battery still in the car in the winter. However the owners manual states that the ambient temperature should be 0-40 degrees Celcius (32-104 degrees Fahreinheit). So looks like the manufacturer recommends using the charger when it's above freezing (whether that is in the car or inside). Hope that helps.
My guess is that, if your car battery dies and you are somewhere away from a power outlet, NOCO Genius 2 is useless. Am I correct?
Yup, absolutely useless without a power outlet.

How long did it take you to charge a dead battery?
Surprisingly long, about 2.5 days from 100% drained. It will charge but it's not a particularly fast charger. When I need to charge something fast I use the NOCO Genius 10 charger which usually charges in a day or less. I have a Genius 10 video as well if you are interested in a faster charger:

I always thought that with chargers / maintainers that you connect red to the red terminal but connect black to a metal part of the car (to serve as a ground) rather than to the negative terminal.
Yet in all the videos I've seen of this product people seem to be connecting red-red and black-black. As far as I can tell the manual is silent on whether you have to connect the black wire to a ground.
Thoughts on this are much appreciated -- I definitely want to buy one of these. I may contact the manufacturer to verify.
I've always hooked it up directly to the battery, but you're right the manual isn't super clear. Hooking the black to a vehicle ground point would work just as well, but if you hook directly to the battery in theory there is less resistance the charger has to overcome.
@@many-points I did buy one, have had it about a month, and am just connecting the black directly to the negative terminal. So far no issues have arisen doing so.
My last car battery cooked itself on a Schumacher trickle charger in 6 months (battery was dated 7/22 and car was stone cold dead by December 2022). I don't drive much and I kept it 24/7 connected to that Schumacher charger but I had the black connected to a metal ground point on the car. I don't know if the battery was defective, whether my charger was bad (it still seems to work fine on my riding mower) or if it was the way I had the black hooked up.
Anyway so far so good with the NOCO!
This was a best practice for when jump starting a car from years ago, to avoid sparks at the battery in case the battery was leaking hydrogen. With plug in charges, I believe the concern is not there because, you can connect the alligator clips while the charger is off and then power it on.

Hi, thanks for the video. What happens if the charger is in standby mode but the batter is good? Does that mean the battery is fully charged?
On the previous Noco G1100 charger, the green light would remain solid green if the battery was 100% charged. .
My experience with this charger is that the light is solid green when fully charged, blinking green when either maintaining or "topping off" the battery.
It should not return to standby mode unless it is disconnected from the battery (or comes slightly loose) or standby mode is manually selected. Once charging it should remain in an infinite charge/maintain cycle and not return to standby.

I think the inline fuse may be blown in the
Noco GC002 X-Connect Eyelet Terminal Connector which is making the charger blink orange and stay in standbye mode (i.e. no connection).

Haha, that would be nice. Unfortunately all batteries no matter how well maintained will die, and no charger on earth can save. But with good maintenance you can get 5 years out of one, sometimes even 10 if you're nice to it.
@@many-points I think he meant no more AutoZone drop off to recharge your good battery. Now you can do it at home. Takes a while but not bad for the price and size.
@@many-points I have a question. What percentage of the battery would you say is required in order to start a car?? Like say if the battery is good and the alternator is good but you hadn't started your car for several months and the battery is now dead. It doesn't need a 100% charge in order to start, correct? So what is the minimum charge for it to start the car? 25%? 50? I guess this really isn't a question about the product, just about car batteries in general.
@@detroitMC313 I'm not 100% sure but I would think for sure would need at least 50% charge to be able to start (might struggle to start though in my experience), I would feel confident 75% charge would start engine readily.

Can I use this as a maintainer and connect it and leave for one month? Do we need to take the battery out from the car as the temperature is -20.
The manual says that it is designed of -4 degrees Fahrenheit to 104 degrees Fahrenheit so yes you'll need to move the battery to warmer place before using the maintainer.
When in within the required temperature range the maintainer is designed to be left plugged in indefinitely (a month is fine per their product documentation).
I have 3 deep cycle batteries running in parallel in my boat powering 3 amps and 13 speakers is this unit capable of charging my battery bank back up for boating the next day or do know of a good charger for that is capable of that thank you very informative video
The NOCO Genius 2 charger is far to small to handle 3 batteries in parallel.
I would think the NOCO Genius 25 or NOCO Genius 50 would have enough juice to charge all 3 overnight, but I've never tried so I don't know for sure.
I don't understand the electrical cord. If I am out and about with no access to electricity how will this work?
Good question. The Genius 2 is a trickle charge that requires you to be plugged into a wall.

How long did it take yours to charge? Im about 10 hours in on a 68ah smart car battery and still on the first bar second bar coming on intermittently. lol No error lights so maybe battery was just super dead
For Genius 2 can take up to 2 days in my experience. If it takes much more than that the battery is probably toast and can't be saved
I looked up my battery and still have no idea if it is 12V, AGM, or lithium. If in doubt should you just choose 12V and will it still work if you choose the wrong mode?
Yeah 12V is the safest bet. Most of the batteries on the market are standard flooded lead acid which would be the 12V mode.
You could cross reference battery part number online to make sure you are using the right mode, if you look up the part number and it came from a specific store (e.g. duralast = autozone) you could call the store to get additional details on the battery.
I'm not sure if the NOCO Genius 2 has any safety built in for accidentally choosing the wrong mode, so best to double check before charging.
How long do you think it would take on a vehicle you drive once a month with a fairly new battery
Time to charge? Maybe like a day in my experience if the vehicle is occasionally driven.
Nice thing about this unit is you can leave it plugged indefinitely on a vehicle while it is stored and it won't overcharge.

Hi, do you know why my brand new Genius 2 wont come out of stand by mode? The Mode switch wont toggle to different battereies. I also hooked up the boost GBc007 cable in place of the charger clip abd it didnt do anything different I tested this on both a brand new Noco Lithium and a fully charged Lead battery. no changes
Assuming it's all hooked up correctly I would guess you have bum (broken) unit. It should come out of standby when you push the power button if it all hooked up correctly.
So what if it doesn’t turn on after the force on? I’ve tried everything and I know my battery has a bit of juice. I’ve seen other videos where the button clicks and mine doesn’t. Does that mean my charger doesn’t work? I’ve tried three diff batteries and nothing. The thing is brand new. Pls help.
Sounds like you might have a defective unit (if it's not working on any batteries). Yeah the button should click. I would exchange it wherever you bought it for a different unit, most big retail exchange process is free.
I have a stock vespa. all stock. battery is 12v.
Which mode should i choose? 12v or 12v AGM. what is the difference.
Without looking at it my guess would be that a stock Vespa battery would be AGM so you would use AGM mode. I like to look for any marking on battery or label that say look for any "AGM" or "absorbed glass mat", sometimes "sealed" or "gel" can indicate AGM too. When in doubt (if there are no obvious markings) I like to google the battery part number to make sure.
What size extension cord did you use in terms of Ft. (length in feet) G (guage) & V/A/W (Volts/Amp/Watts)? The NOCO Gen. 2 User Guide does not seem to specify a minimum for use of an extension cord.
I use a 14-gauge 50 foot cord plugged into a 120V 15A outlet and haven't had any issues.

I just used a 50' 12AWG extension cord without any issues. 14AWG would probably work, as well.

Will this work for a trickle charge for a boat with 2 batteries sitting over the winter?
I would think so. I leave it trickle charging my single truck battery (indefinitely plugged in) all winter long and it works great for that. However I've never tried charging two batteries with a single unit, I would imagine you might either need two of these (and disconnect and charge the batteries individually), or get a larger higher amperage version of the same charger (e.g. Genius 10, Genius 25) if you are trying to charge both batteries at the same time while hooked up in the boat.
Genius 2 might be able to do two batteries hooked in the same circuit but with only 2 amps it might struggle. I've never tried with 2 batteries.
How do you use this as a trickle charger for a 12 volt car or boat battery
You just plug it in and turn it to 12V mode. Once the battery is charged it will trickles/maintains charge indefinitely on the battery. You can leave it plugged in year round.
Can you connect UBS's to this, to charge other items?
No, but the NOCO GB70 does charge items via usb. I made a video about that one as well:

Yes
Does this charger desulfate a agm?
Yes it's designed to desulfate Lead Acid including AGM.
Dows it go into trickle mode or Float mode ?
Great question. It trickles until it detects the battery is 100% charge, then it goes into and idle float mode.
If it detects the voltage has dropped it will start trickling again. So it is safe to leave it plugged in indefinitely it is designed to not overcharge.
Does the battery have to be hooked up to the car lol?
Nope! You can charge the battery by itself just fine.
hi great easy to follow video 👍 am I right in thinking that when the 3 red lights are still on and the green light is flashing, this is still charging/maintaining the battery, and I have to wait until all 3 red light go out and the green light is on continuously until its fully charged/maintained? thanks 😁
Yup when it is maintaining the only light that is on is the green and it's flashing. When the charger is completely idle (not doing anything because battery is fully charged) the is one solid green light (not flashing).
