- Portrait painting is not easy in the beginning. A good underpainting helps you to better hold the shape and the resemblance. You can make this in acrylic paint. It is immediately dry and you can get started right away. An underpainting in oil paint is also a possibility. However, that must be dry if you want to really benefit from it. Both have their own advantages.
In a following video I explain how to make an underpainting in oil paint and whereupon you should pay attention to.
It is my intention to publish more of everything I know about portrait painting .
And I want this information to be free for everyone. That is why I ask your collaboration with the subtitle captions. The English and Dutch language is ok. Other translations can be improved.

Until now I received the most nice and grateful reactions from all over the world.
And that gives me a lot of satisfaction.

How beautiful her granddaughter dressed as a chulapa. Madrid is a beautiful city, I am from Barcelona. Spain is all precious.
Looking forward to seeing the finished work. Thank you.
Gracias.
This is exactly the tip I needed! I had to wipe a portrait off because I lost the likeness so much, it would have really helped to have an acrylic under painting to get me quickly back to it! Will do this from now on. I love your channel. Thank you so much!
Thank you Kate. It is a tip that I found years ago in the book "Rockwell on Rockwell". That book helped a lot.
Thank you so much Ben! I diligently follow along with you and also make notes. You are the best!
Great to hear!
Thank you for the tips. I will adjust how I apply shadows to the face, because I was outlining them and that made extra work for me.
Good job . Tough painting kids , especially grandchildren. They can be critical.
I know, but I am as critical.
Mine are very observant. An eyebrow too dark. Eye color different . One got really mad because I painted her with her hair up. What do they want for free?
Looking forward to the finished painting of ur beautiful granddaughter, very useful tips thanks so much sir👌👍
Next week!
Thank you so much for kindly sharing your knowledge and talent with us.
My pleasure!

Love your instruction! Thank you for sharing. 😊😊
You are welcome
Great work for the underpainting! Love the saying “ almost always “ - feels like a lot of art work can relate to that. Its a necessary process you need to battle 😁
So true!
This is a very useful tip. Thank you very much. Learning and experimenting with your help, here in Cape Town. I love your calm, kind and logical approach. Keep safe, best wishes and many thanks.
Thank you for your kind words
Nice to see acrylic paints are good for something, :) they drove me mad drying too quick when I tried to paint with them.
Genial Maestro!! Como siempre, un placer verlo trabajar.
Muchas gracias.
Very single and practical ,and good draw.
Thank you so much for generously sharing your knowledge and process!
My pleasure.
Really great and insightful stuff Ben.
Thank you.

Thank you!
Thank you Ben 👏👏

Beautiful!

Hello Ben! I'm in an atempt of a painting... I made and accurate drawing in charcoal and used a fixative spray... I tryed to make a prime wash with acrilic and It happened that problem! Lol!!
Next time I Will use soap toghether.
Thanks Ben!
It´s really a good trick you know!
@@lustenhouwer yea! I did not figured why the acrilic underpainting was not sticking into the panel, I thought it was due to the fixative spray. Anyway, when I tryed to get rid of the acrilic, somehow It fixed, rubbing the acrilic...
But the next time I Will use your tip and everytime I Will do It i'll remind you Ben!
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Let me ask you one more question.
When drawing with charcoal, is it necessary to apply fixative, If I'll prime the Canvas with an acrilic wash?
@@davirosa You could try a wash but have a try first. It could erase the drawing. look this demo. My portrait was pretty big and there was no need to fix the charcoal at all.. ua-cam.com/video/UrNXS86xXNI/v-deo.html
@@lustenhouwer Hi Ben, good morning.
I'll take a look, thank you for answearing me. Yesterday I saw the complete painting of your grandaughter, its a lovely painting. Congratulations! Also I took notes of some tips, as to don't mix blue in shadows - work Just with red n Green. Blue Just in case of a reflected light? With a milky appearance?
Hugs from Brazil, Ben!!
Hey Ben , very artistic and also informative on the history of the ancient culture. #thegenesisprinciplefineart
Sincerely hope that 'next week' comes fast..☺☺☺

Thank you
I use acrylic under my paintings, but I have started to wonder at some of the reports of acrylic paintings failing. I imagine that is damage from the light, so very much less likely with an underpainting, but some paints are transparent to an extent. The point at which one fails to see the colours under a painting is the point at which the film is thick enough not to allow the light to penetrated and bounce back out of the underpainting to the eye. This point is reached well before the light is actually blocked from reaching the underpainting and degrading it.
I am certainly not worried for my work. Just a point of what I hope is theoretical interest.
That is a good point. Even the most opaque paint has a level of transparency.
Tot volgende week, Ben. En nog een fijne zondag! Grtjes
Dank je Joke. Eensgelijks
Muito bom. Grata!
Gracias.

Great video Ben. Congratulations on your charming granddaughter. Best regards
Thank you.
You have great videos. I am so appreciative of your explanations and step-by-step process. I am learning so much! Why do you choose oil over acrylic? Do you think it makes an artist less competitive? Do oils sell better than acrylic? Thanks for any insight you can provide.
I simply like oil more than acrylics. Maybe it is more sellable I don't know but that is not the reason. Oil allows me to make far better paintings.
Mooi hoor, en leerzaam waarom de onderschildering. Heel benieuwd naar volgende week!👍
Dank. tot de volgende week.
Can I use an acrylic thinner or gel medium for the burnt sienna undertones? I’m so grateful I found your work . I’m starting on my journey to learn portrait painting. I plan to try Golden Open acrylics for a longer wet-on-wet ability with longer dry time . Still plan to use regular acrylic for any initial background and definitely under painting . Don USA FLORIDA
I think so. Just have a try and see. You have a palette to keep paint wet long time?
Dear Ben, I am totally new to portrait painting and trying to paint my granddaughter. But I got the problem with likeliness right after first layer of color and also she looks much older than she really is (3 years old). Could you please share your tips on fixing such problems and/or maybe make a video on that if only possible. Thanks a lot!
The secret is in the accurate drawing. If that is not right then you keep struggling. That is really the only thing. But besides that, un underpainting does not necessarily have the complete likeness. You may only be able to judge the final painting. I understand you want to make a nice portrait of your granddaughter, but you say you are new to portrait painting. I say always one has to make a hundred bad paintings before until it starts.
@@lustenhouwer But how do you deal with in such situations?
Do you start a new attempt or try to look for that missing likeliness and continue the same portrait until it gets better?
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have Masterson stay-wet sealable case with gray posh glass palette inside
Sounds perfect
Thank You, it's interesting.
My pleasure
Have you ever done a wash of acrylic over the drawing instead of a complete under painting?
Yes I did. I even did it with the acrylic base without pigment. But I need a more visible underpainting.
Another great video, thank you. May I ask about the screen you view photos on ?
I use a Eizo screen. 24.1 inch ColorEdge CS240
Ben Lustenhouwer thank you for your reply.
Really helpful video. In previous videos when you use red pencil to draw the subject is it a watercolour pencil?
No! watercolour will disappear when covering with acrylics,
@@lustenhouwer Thank you. I have never used acrylics but always done an underpainting with OMS & paint. If I buy acrylics for the underpainting which colours would be best. Take care, go well. Pat Holland
Pat Holland I use normally Burnt Sienna.
@@lustenhouwer Thank you. I could sit all day & watch you paint you look so relaxed whilst you are painting.
Hi Ben, very nice video as always! Also, we're trying to add/improve the subtitle in this video but the link in your description doesn't work. I think it links to Your Contribution. Maybe you can take a look at it? Groetjes!

@@lustenhouwer It works now!
How to resist painting such a lovely girl .
Indeed
I have always painted for fun . Background- I painted close to a 1000 models. Pretty close to all were done with no drawing or underpainting. Only in the last few years did I decide to have a step process. Drawing, underpainting, first color , second etc etc.
The difference in accuracy is significant. The artistic expression is less as you painted for life like. To me kind of sad.
I like many of my old paintings. I gave away many as models asked if they could have them. I still took photos of about 400 and every so often go back and look at my website which was my records.
Painting has to be fun.
