Steven the Seagull had his wing broken in two places, after 13 months of care and therapy he regained the ability to fly and was released into the wild.
I work in the harbours of Rotterdam on a oil storage terninal. We have a tame seagull to. We found it with a busted wing and helped to recover him/her. We set the bird free as soon as the wing healed again but the gull nevver leaved us ever since. It flies and hangs arround the workshop and we pet and feed him/her sometimes. It is our pet for 5 years now.
Seagulls live for over 20 years, they have been around a lot longer than us and are pretty smart. I'm sure yours knows a good thing when it sees it. Fixing a broken wing is not easy, but it's always worth a try if you get it early enough.
@@billytruth6444 Michael it would depend how old the break was, it would normally be put to sleep unless you were willing to pay an avian vet to have a go at fixing it. Once the bones fuse or callus it cant be fixed.
When first found, Steven had head injuries and broken right wing, he was also infested with lice. Although I treated all of the above, his repaired wing had a slight twist and I feared he would never fly. To exercise his wings, I held food higher and higher for him to fly/jump, and also threw him into the air every day. Eventually he made it over the garden fence on his own so I decided to take him to the beach and let him go. You can see he was able to fly in the video.
@@conceptalfa he found for sure someone nice with snackos. Science says that life span of seagull is around 20 years so maybe hes still happy alive (probably not)
Beautiful. Thank you for your kindness taking care of that beautiful gull. I've seen some wildlife aids simply euthanize a gull with a broken wing without giving the poor baby a chance. Thank you so much for giving this bird another chance!
I live on a boat and I've rescued a few juvenile herring gulls that have flown the nest just a bit too early. Some people on the marina don't like it as they see them as vermin but I believe everything should have a chance at life. Thank you for saving and repairing this injured baby and giving the chance in life it needed.
Lovely story. We are currently taking care of an orphaned gull. Quite large and can feed itself but no sign of flying yet. Been supplying meal worms, porridge, fish but I suspect when it finally goes off the diet will be KFC, burgers and general rubbish. Thanks for your vid nice person.
Found a gull in a parking lot with a broken wing almost torn off completely. Cop told me that if I want to take him home until I find wildlife rehab center it's fine. I know they will put him down. He runs to food and seems fine otherwise, so how can I help his broken wing as no vets really care for wild birds here? In Illinois.
Reminds me a lot of my MissG who was also playful like a little dog during her youth. We're together since 2004 since she has a stiff wing joint. They're really like kitten and dogs, but a dog-dog will always fear the spiky snout of a gull-dog if it gets in play mood. :D
Once he felt the wind under his wings,he knew it was time to move on. You could've selfishly kept him in captivity and he would've went along but you allowed him to chose between freedom and domestication. Nice job man.
awesome. I have a friendly seagull who hangs out on my balcony and now he is bringing his wife aswell. They have had children on the next houses roof for the last 3 summers. As I am writing this he is looking at me throught the window
It depends how long the wing has been broken as to whether you can fix it. Best take it to a vet and they will determine if it is fixable. Otherwise you can try using vetwrap bandage and wrap the wing into position for about 2 weeks.
@davthepunk Well because I live in the middle of a town, I was worried he would have flown onto the adjoining road and been run over ! Better to take him to the beach where he stood a better chance of survival. You do get attached to them, but they are wild birds after all.
Hi i am in a similar position, I have a herring gull roughly a few years old and not quite sure if its broken or just bashed it as the elbow of the wing has a scab area on it, I have contacted my local SSPCA and there wildlife team said they could take him but might be better to put him down, but he's really healthy, and is able to hold his wing in position now not dragging on the ground as we found him 5 weeks ago. CONT..

I think might be an older brother. unfortunately one of the chicks died dunno what was the reason. the food I provide is mainly fish. the remaining chick not even training for flying I see other chicks on the neighboring house almost fledged
Michael it would depend how old the break was, it would normally be put to sleep unless you were willing to pay an avian vet to have a go at fixing it. Once the bones fuse or callus it cant be fixed.
Unfortunately if the break is more than a few days old it will be impossible to fuse together. Gulls live for 25 years and it would be unkind to keep it unable to ever fly. It may well be in pain if the break is close to the body and of course it will still want to eat and drink. You can always fold the wing into the same positon as the good wing with vetwrap and hope it will heal. From what you say, it would be kinder to have it put to sleep.
They are very violent and aggressive certain seagulls are. For some reason the seagull attack’s cats and cats are scared of them. Seeing as cats are hunters and eat birds I would of thought cats would kill birds, although seagulls are very big the only time a cat could kill a seagulls is when it’s a baby as they are tiny.
Well I've got a Herring Gull which we rescued on 3 March 2024 and it's missing two thirds of it's left wing. I have no intention of having it put down as it's very animated, eats well and has come to trust us. If necessary, I shall build it a special section onto my aviary. But put it down, NEVER !
I have a tame herring gull who just turned up at my flat about 3 months ago, he tries to get into my flat but i have a cat and I don't know who would come out best in a fight, he watches until my cat goes out and knocks on my patio doors, comes in, eats the cat food, he wont let his ladyfriend come anywhere near my flat, gives her a hard time if she tries. Not sure why and how he sussed I would be friendly.
Hi Wesho09,If the area has a scab on it, sounds like it is a surface wound and no broken bone. Is it able to use the wing ie, flap and fold it ? Birds can make remarkable recovery. Prevention of infection can be either through antibiotics from your Vet which can be added to it's food such as Baytril. Or a natural healer such as honey and bandaged over the wing . Hope everything works out for it.
Hi Cateyes, If the birds health is run down it may be infested with lice. These you should be able to see under the wings and on the body of the bird. if it's health is good it wont have any lice. You can get a single dose capsule from the vet which you apply to the birds skin. If you bandage the wing make sure it's in the correct position and not too tight. If it heals in the wrong position the bird will not be able to use it for flight.
Hi daletwin1 Best take it to a vet for advice, Or you can try and bandage the wing into position if it has just happened. You might need to put a rubber band round the beak first as seagulls can give you a serious peck !
I always thought that Steven Seagull was not really a human. It's not that it's bad to be a volatile but just about everything that interest him revolves around food. I wonder how he do to stay slim?
If it's uninjured best left lone for parents to feed and look after it. They have a birds eye view and know where it is. Most gulls walk around for a couple of weeks until they fly, but the parents wean them on the ground, maybe only visiting them once or twice a day.
