what was the weight difference? There seems to be some rules - no gouging of eyes, biting, kicking to the groin, etc. to truly test the effectiveness of any style is allowing a fight to the death, then we can truly gauge how good a person is and how good a style is. Everything else is an opinion.
@@drewsjlee8010 did you watch the fight? Xu dominated the other guy. His tactic is to let his opponent get a few early hits in to show they are ineffective then beat them thoroughly. The fight was ruled a draw for purely political reasons.
There's a difference between fighting and "fighting". Combat sports (ufc, boxing, karate, taekwondo, etc) are under "fighting" because they added rounds with breaks so each fighter can freshen up and create more action in the ring/arena. Those "fights" were built for entertainment. I don't know what their rules are for this "fight" but my guess is that takedowns could be seen as cheating like Mayweather is with "running".

Xu Xiaodong, I support your cause. I understand you do it for yourself, and that's fine. I wish you the best of luck, and I want to tell you, whether you think you do or not, I think you fight with honor and you quest brings honor to your family and all fellow practitioners of MMA. They, like you, seek actual truth in form and substance to better themselves without needing to lie to themselves about their style and their skill.
No disrespect to Wing Chun or any other traditional martial art. I grew up loving this art and it gave birth to many famous, skilled practitioners, who influenced the fighting arts in numerous, incalculable ways (even if sometimes the contribution is what NOT to do). However, despite the claims made by exceptional talents who *may* be able to use this (or other) style(s) effectively, it is not an effective style. Lack of true grappling technique (offensive and defensive), take-downs, ground fighting, etc; it forces the practitioner to overwhelm their opponent immediately with the initial flurry of blows, otherwise they risk being put into a position they are unfamiliar with and subsequently dominated from then on. Absent exceptional talent, creativity, and athleticism relative to their opponent (i.e. a complete mismatch), Wing Chun is unable to contend with the much broader tool-set offered by MMA. The same can be said for many other practices and traditions.
Respect should be given to history and tradition. However, blindly following both into the future for the sake of elevating the mythology is a fools errand. Particularly when many of the myths and exaggerations can be demonstrated so clearly as this.

However, to pretend these styles/systems of techniques are as effective in combat as the much broader set of techniques offered by MMA, and further to diminish a man who fights to prove this very fact; is wrong. His fights prove it, and that is my point. The question isn't about respect, it is about effectiveness.
I contend most people who practice martial arts have respect for the history and lineage of not just their style, but others as well. Particularly if they progress to an advanced level. However what matters in a fight isn't how well established your chosen style's lineage is, nor is it how advanced you happen to be in that particular style. What matters is how effective it is versus your opponent. Given the much larger tool set of MMA, kind of the whole point, it is not shocking it tends to almost always win.

What's ironic is that Xu Xiaodong was actually using more WC-related trapping techniques against the WC master (such as using 'gum sau' holding a piece of his opponent's clothing, and keeping him at bay whilst attacking). Full credit to Xu on his victory here, but personally watching this as a WC practitioner - this was an embarrassing shit show :(
