I'm going to Durham this September! But honestly, I am kind of scared about the instances of racism that I have heard, given that I am an Indian. Thank you for the insightful video!
I was born and raised in Durham and now live in Canada. Durham University College Castle was my home for 2 weeks in 1997 as a mature Student with the Open University. Loved every minute of it despite living only 14 miles away in Newcastle. It is a special place. I took my Canadian girlfriend there in 2018 and she loved it!
I've just firmed Durham and I also got into St Mary's !! I'm was super excited but I'm now slightly worried about the overall culture there. I am Chinese and to be honest, I'm kinda scared that I'll have to deal with racism, especially after this whole Covid-19 pandemic thing :( Any advices for the international Chinese students? P.S. I've been watching a lot of your videos to get the feel of Durham so thank you so much for all the content !!! Keep up the good work :)
Honestly, I don't think you should worry about racism, people that are racist tend to just be really uneducated (and often more elderly), it's not really an issue you'll experience in a student community but I appreciate after recent events you may be concerned so if anything does happen, Mary's support staff are really good and proactive so will sort it out immediately, racism isn't tolerated AT ALL so just speak up about it to staff members. Also, Durham has a lot of Chinese internationals so you shouldn't be worried about feeling out of place; there are even Chinese societies and International societies that anyone can join to embrace different cultures, I've joined them myself to learn about other countries so they're very inclusive. I'm glad you've been enjoying my videos and that they've helped, that's made my day! Well done for getting into Durham and good luck for next year xx
Thank you so much. I am an international student in Durham and always find difficulty understanding what my classmates are saying, you just give me a chance to hear how those words are like.❤
The cleaners - the cleaners... the cleaners! Charming and honest account - useful for our young people (who are so very young in experience compared to 30 years ago) as money management is so hard now with the disastrous marketisation of HE in Britain. Wise words on boozing as well. What a sound youngster!
V insightful video. Went through similar thing at durham in same year at same college (stalker - yikes). Just something to add on what is already a good vid: If there's one thing I wish I'd done, it would be joining uni societies (Durham has so many). Reason I didn't was because no one I knew was, which just isn't a good excuse. Main tip is to get out of your comfort zone asap and just stay out for as long as possible. Dont play it safe as soon as freshers week is over. Gonna try Latin ballroom dancing next year I think
