The best fact about this movie is that it was more or less filmed "in the wild" with no licenses to film at certain locations. They didn't even have a budget for light, so Cameron was driving around the city to find street lights that were perfect for certain shots.
Also, Tech Noir the night club was some rented place that was turned into a set to film. Midway through the filming a queue formed in front of it and people tried to get in...

Absolutely love the first Terminator. The second movie has bigger budget and more action, but I like the more grounded, down to earth, horror and tech-noir style of the first movie. And as someone who wants to make movies, I feel a stronger connection to this one. It's almost something that a competent crew of amature filmmakers could make (I would never even dream of ever touching a project as big as T2 tho). They made the first one basically in guerrilla style, with little to no permits, and always being ready to run before the cops shut down the filming.

18:09, Kyle is the baby daddy. In the novelization to this movie, its revealed that Sarah told John who Kyle was. So when they met Connor kept Kyle close to him in The Resistance to ensure that he didn't get killed. He also never tells Kyle that they are related.
There is a wonderful scene in the book in which John walks into the chamber of the time machine and asks to speak to Kyle alone. Kyle is immediately fan boying to meet the leader of all human armies. John makes Kyle memorize the speech to give to Sarah until he can recite it verbatim. Then John looks at this younger soldier for a long beat, hugs him fiercely then quickly walks out of the room.
It's only later once Kyle is gone, that John Connor tells the assembled crowd of soldiers and technicians, that the young man he sent on a one way mission was his father. It is at this moment that he cries because he had to send his own father to his death.

Arnold had already been in a few other movies before this: Hercules goes to New York (1970), The Villain (1979), Conan the Barbarian (1982), and Conan the Destroyer (1984), but this was the one that really made the rest of his acting career, followed up with Commando, Predator, Terminator 2, and so on...

Before Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast as the titular character, OJ Simpson was considered to play the Terminator, but James Cameron changed his mind saying, "He's too much of a nice guy to play the role of a ruthless killer."😳🤦
Tom Selleck, Lance Henriksen, Sylvester Stallone, and Mel Gibson were considered for the part as well.
Bruce Springsteen, Michael O'Keefe, Tommy Lee Jones, Christopher Reeve, Scott Glenn, Sting, Treat Williams, and Matt Dillon were considered for Kyle Reese.

One of the best, if not the best horror sci-fi dystopia ever made. I love T2, I saw it as a kid in '91 and it deserves all the praise but I'm one of those who consider T1 "THE" Terminator movie. Comparing the two films it can be seen that in the case of the '84 film, the goal was less to be popular. They wanted to make the most of Cameron's vision with a small budget. The film has a dark, gloomy, "grainy" 80's feel, to which we add Brad Fiedel's fantastic analog music themes. All of these make it unique and unrepeatable.

Thanks for the fun and cool reaction! I liked it a lot!
As for why Sarah wasn't immediately feeling safe with Kyle: I think we need to factor in that Sarah is established as quite the normal person, working as a waitress and dating etc. She is already on edge from knowing about the killings of her name-kin. Without knowing about cyborgs, future wars or anything, it's reasonable to say that all the shooting and killing at Tech Noir Sarah was battling shock. She doesn't know Kyle and even if he would have a chance to harm her earlier, she does not know what he wants with her. However, WE do, as the audience. So I think shock just led her to the "fight or flight or freeze", in which case she opted for the two latter ones. :)

Yes! Thank you! Sarah didn't see Kyle shoot the Terminator. She was looking at the Terminator when it happened. It was confusing and chaotic. I think most of us would have reacted like Sarah if that happened to us. Once she's in the car with Kyle, there's a shot of her looking away, clearly in shock, like she has no idea what to do or what's going on.

About this movie: yes, it was THE breakthrough for Arnold as an action actor. Before, he was in "Pumping Iron", a kind of bodybuilder documentary, "Hercules in New York", a b-movie fantasy film and his first big role in "Conan the barbarian". Before his acting career, he won every bodybuilding contest, some of them multiple times including "Mr. Olympia" and "Mr.Universe". For "The Terminator" he had to lose weight because he was TOO stacked 😉
Fun fact: Lance Henrikson was first casted as the terminator because they are an "infiltration unit" and he looks like a normal guy, but then he got the role of one of the police officers in the station with Sarah. But he, Michael Biehn (Reese) and Bill Paxton (blue-haired punk) worked with James Cameron again later in "Aliens". BTW, Bill Paxton is the only human got killed by a Terminator, a Xenomorph and a Predator 😉

"The Terminator": The Hero's Journey of Sarah Connor, assisted by Tech Sgt. Kyle Reese. You saw this on TV at age 5!? How did that happen? 13:11 At this point, the "Movies with Mary" reactor began singing a nursery-rhyme-like song counting down the 30 Cops as some do "100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.";) 17:52 Ask the old folks how fast wartime romances develop, even under the most dire of circumstances. 20:03 Stop Motion terror. 20:25 Sarah's Inner Commander comes out. 22:50 The Eastman Kodak Kodamatic 940 camera that used Kodak Instant Picture Film. Terminated by Polaroid before it "went away like "Pontiac."

22:20 -I personally suspect that before there was different John Connor, son of Sarah Connor, but Because of Kyle she never met the father and because of a little (or meaby much) luck she still born a boy who still became a great leader and of course she named him John and a little different timeline started, which is that one now

The deleted scenes explain that Sarah wanted to blow up the company that would invent the technology that would cause the machines to become self-ware and cause the nuclear war. She and Kyle decide to blow it up, and that is why they were making pipe bombs. The factory at the end is the same company that will invent the technology. That's why they ended up there. The very last deleted scene shows that the remains of the Terminator are how the company learns of the technology. So, the theme of the movie is that the more you try to change the future, the more you set it into place.

I know the time paradox story can get kind of confusing. Like a vicious circle of a time loop. Kyle dies in the past, only to be born again in the future. Kyle's picture of Sarah burns in the fire 🔥 only to be taken again at the end of the film.
This whole concept is like recycling ♻️ the same things over and over again but fresh. I find it ironic that Kyle says he always wondered 🤔 what Sarah was thinking about in the picture. If he only knew. Sarah was thinking of him as she made her recordings. -OG

John Connor and Skynet are both products of a time paradox causality loop of demented doom a go go.
2:53 Michael Connell Biehn glancing over the name "Michael B. Connor."
4:01 That's called a Big Wheel. All of us '80s kids had those. I had a Knight Rider one.
    13:11 He's gunzerking!
15:28 That's the late Franco Columbu, one of Arnie's bodybuilder buddies of the time, as a model 102 Terminator.
22:54 Remember when Kyle said he'd always wondered what she was thinking at that moment? She was thinking of him.

The thing with this movie was there was a scene that was cut that they put in the special edition that showed as Sarah was getting put into the ambulance it goes and shows that she was outside cyberdyne systems. To me that is the closed loop. A cyberdyne robot ends up at cyberdyne at the end

The end is the beginning and the beginning is the end. The war is lost, so the machines come back to the beginning. John's beginning is from a soldier of the end... fun concept to play with.

The first Terminator movie is a horror/action movie.
You not knowing anything about this movie was perfect both for reaction and going into it.
Sarah had an arch she was confused and scared but at the last battle she went full leader mode and showed us the qualities her son will inherit. Something living beings can but machines cant.
