    In English, the idiom "to go the distance" means to follow something through -- usually something difficult -- all the way to the end. The phrase comes from boxing, where it meant to last for all of the rounds without giving up or getting knocked out. Rocky wanted to prove he could "go the distance" against the champ, and he did exactly that. Being judged as the winner or not really didn't matter to him. That's why, at the end of the film, the judges' decision fades into the background noise. It's irrelevant to Rocky. He already accomplished what he'd set out to do.

    • @charminbaer2323

      And going the distance back then was even more difficult. Boxing went 15 rounds back then, it was changed in the mid/late 80's I think, now it's 12 rounds.

    You're watching movie history: Rocky literally invented the "training montage." Before Rocky, Hollywood montages consisted of shots of newspaper headlines (like in The Godfather) or seasons changing in order to show the passage of time. Rocky was the first movie to use a montage to show a character training toward a goal. Rocky was such a huge hit -- it was a huge box-office smash and won a bunch of awards -- that afterwards everyone began copying it.

    There are 3 judges who judge every round of a fight. The boxer who wins the most rounds is declared the winner. A split decision means that one judge thought Rocky won more rounds than Creed, but looking at the footage we saw, Apollo dominated most of that fight.

    • @craigplatel813
      @craigplatel813 Рік тому +13

    • @taiwanwhite5762
      @taiwanwhite5762 Рік тому +13

      There's so much nuance that I didn't want to overwhelm. The first round is a great example of scoring. Apollo starts by leading with the jab, but loses a point by knock down,. Rocky gets more aggressive and gets to the body, while Apollo tries to re-establish the jab. They trade back and forth and Apollo drops Rocky and breaks his nose at the end of the first with a combination. The knockdowns would cancel each other out and due to his command of the ring in that round, Apollo probably would've won it on at least two of the scorecards, 10-9.

      @@craigplatel813 I remember when I was watching boxing in the 1972 Olympics that the knuckle area on Olympic boxing gloves were a different color from the rest of the glove, and it was explained that some fighters used to briefly open their hand at the last moment when they threw a punch to give themslves a couple extra inches in reach to help them land "punches" that had no power at all but still counted for points if the judges couldn't see that they weren't striking with the legal part of a the hand. Sipposedly, coloring the knuckle area so it stood out made it easier for judges to see whether or not the right part of the hand was making contact.

    I love the kiss scene. I know a lot of people find it awkward or even like Rocky is a creep. And while this kinda stuff would be a red flag in the real world, we are shown Rocky's life. We see how he's a little slow and dumb, but he's a decent guy. Someone who wouldn't take advantage of Adrian. We know he's trustworthy. That he has a good heart.
    That's what I love about the scene. Adrian has been told her whole life she is worthless. That she doesn't even have physical appeal. And here's this bum from the slums who's dying to get a chance to tell her how much he cares. That HE thinks she's incredible. Allowing this girl suffering from the disease of Shyness to forget Paulie and her Mother just for a moment and let down her walls. Let this goofy guy sweep her off her feet into a loving embrace. This Movie series is a love story with Boxing thrown in. And this moment is what sold me on Rocky & Adrian.

    Quite a few people have an issue with the way Rocky interacts with Adrian in the apartment, but they miss the signals throughout the first half of the movie. Rocky frequently catches Adrian looking at him during the visits to the pet shop, and if she weren't interested, she'd have absolutely continued to ignore him.
    Rocky knew she was interested in him but he also gathered enough information that she's suffocatingly shy. A big part of that is Paulie, who keeps her caged like a bird.
    At no point once Adrian enters that apartment does the word "No" leave her lips. She wants to be there, she likes him, but she's a deer in the headlights without any idea what to do and she wants to retreat back to the prison her brother built for her.
    Rocky was just as uncomfortable as Adrian, but he knew the attraction was there and took a chance to try to let her feelings come out. If she had actually told him no, he'd have been the first one to open the door to let her out.

      I've never hears anyone say it's for swelling... It's a lot more simple than that. You have a mouthguard in when you fight and it's quite exhausting. You have to be able to take deep, full breaths consistently and so you go crazy with the nasal spray to clear the sinuses and make sure they stay clear for the fight.

    The transformation of Adrian is some of the best writing ever IMO. She goes from a shy, quiet and timid girl thats constantly berated and pushed down by everyone around her, especially her brother, to this outgoing, confident and assertive woman. Rocky doesnt really have a way with word "I got gaps, she got gaps, together we fill gaps" is just his way of saying they complete and compliment eachother. They needed eachother to draw out the best version of themselfs thats hidden underneath.
    "Rocky is not a boxing movie. It's a love story" Sylvester Stallones own words.

    Always a great channel. How beautiful is this story? Us old guys loved it when it came out but the more years that go by, the more I realize how amazing this is as a love story, a zero-to-hero story, an inspiration to everyone.... I think I love this story more today than when I seen it as a kid in the 70s.

    Hi Kamilla!🙂You have to keep watching! The Rocky franchise is a love story. "Rocky II" begins at the very end of this film, so it is more like a part 2. Adjusted for inflation $40 would be $211 U.S. today. So, that is not much at all. That scene is meant to show how little money Rocky is currently getting. Congratulations college girl!!!🎈🎈🧨🧨🎉🎉That is great news! Great reactions to your first Rocky film, Kamilla!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽You should keep watching! The franchise is GREAT as a whole.🙂

    Championship fights used to be *15* rounds today they are limited to *12.* Non title fights can be *4, 8 or 10* rounds. If somebody is not knocked out it goes to *3* judges who are scoring each round. In this case *2* out of the *3* judges gave the fight to *Apollo* so he won by split decision

    Great reaction, Centane. Although this one was before my time, I LOVE it. And the thing to remember about this movie is that it was made on a very low budget and shot in only 28 days of filming. Sylvester Stallone was an unknown, but he wrote the script, and somehow not just convinced a studio to finance it, but he also convinced them to let him play a role in the movie (not just any role...the TITLE role). Anyway, the end result garnered multiple Oscar nominations and ended up winning the Oscar for Best Picture.
    Btw, this was also the movie that created the 'Workout montage' with the music in movies. Before this movie, filmmakers didn't see it necessary to show the athletes working out in different inter-cutting scenes, since they thought it would bore the audience...lol. But Stallone changed all of that making sure that there was an inspirational workout montage in the movie, the very first of its kind. Now pretty much every movie in this genre uses a similar workout with montage.

    Don't know if anyone said, but if not....what Rocky and Apollo inhaled up their noses was kinda like Vicks vapor rub. It has some menthol and opens the air ways. They also smear vasoline on their faces, especially cheek bones and eye sockets where the bones are close to the skin. The vasoline helps the blows glance off instead of impacting squarely. This reduces the likelihood of being "cut" from a blow forcing the tissue inward around the sharp bones which, in effect, causes the bone to cut the tissue from the inside out. Imagine hitting a wall with a bare fist. The wall cannot literally cut you, but the impact of hard bone of the knuckles against the hard material of the wall mashes the tissue so forcibly that it partially ruptures. Also, when Rocky told Mick that he couldn't see and asked him to "cut" him, this was literal. In a fight, the tissue around the eye (eyebrow, cheek, temple) sustain trauma and begin to swell from a buildup of blood and water, causing the eye to be shut off by the swollen tissue. The fastest and most effective way to counter the effect and restore vision is to make a small incision, typically at the hairline on the underside of the affected eyebrow. This drains some of the built up fluid, the swelling temporarily goes down and vision is restored. Fights are determined by 3 possible outcomes. 1: a technical knockout in which a fighter is disoriented to the extent that he cannot stand to his feet within a 10 second count. 2: a physical knockout in which the fighter is knocked unconscious or 3: by a collective score from a panel of 3 judges. Rocky had already been knocked down for a count at least once versus Apollo being knocked down only once without any count and got back on his feet almost immediately. I say this is the reason that Apollo won the fight on score.

    Each round is scored by 3 judges. They give points on technical boxing skill, knock downs, power and the number of punches landed. The fight can be won by knocking out your opponent, the referee can stop the fight if one fighter can no longer defend himself, the fighter's manager can "throw in the towel" to surrender the fight or you can win by points. A split decision means one of the judges had Rocky winning.

    This is a love story about a man who happens to be a boxer. Rocky lost the match, but he met his goal of going the distance with the world champion. To see more on Rocky and Adrian's relationship growth, you must watch Rocky 2. The entire series of Rocky 1 - 6 is highly recommended. FYI: The nose spray keeps those sinuses open for the most efficient breathing possible.
