Must haves for my next TT
1). The smallest dual axle rig as possible, so I can get into National Parks or boondock easy
    2) solar with an inverter.
3). 4 season or heated tanks.
    4). Maxxfan
    5). Off-road suspension.

Our biggest requirement was one that you didn't mention... a bed that allows you to enter/exit from either side so you don't have to crawl over your partner to get in/out of bed.

    • @annej5699
      @annej5699 3 роки тому

I agree, though I might bend on this if I find a trailer that otherwise works for me. But yes, not having to crawl over (or be crawled over) would be NICE.

We are looking for a new RV too and our last one had the"crawl over" bed. I added a pilot extension so we could sleep with our heads at the front of the trailer and that helped but looking for an better solution.

You both have done a great job modifying your current trailer. Been a sub since prior to the day you picked up your trailer. It continues to amaze how many places you have gone with a 4x2 and a travel trailer. Says lots about your skills and a trailer that probably wasnt built for where its gone. New isnt always better. Keep up the good work.

I agree with other comment about Outdoors RV. They are super well built with lots of insulation, dual pane windows and large tanks. They are heavy though. The 21KVS has the kitchen that you want. Get a 2 year old model like I did and you save a bunch of money and then can do your custom upgrades like desk instead of dinette, new window treatments, etc. Happy hunting.

Have you considered a toy hauler? You can delete the bed in rear, that whole back wall opens up and you put a screen up there. Most now have the cables so you have a little patio. Yo can make that rear area into office by building another couple desks like you have now. Check out the Northwood Desert Fox series and the Outdoor Trail series. They both are aluminum frame construction (instead of wood) and have enclosed undersides and heated tanks for true 4-season trailers. My freshwater is 72 gallons, Grey 45 gallons, Black 40 gallons.

It’s not so much that’s it “old”, I think that most TT’s are just not made to be used for full time living. Lol. My parents have a TT that they use 10(?) times a year, and it’s almost 15 years old and hasn’t needed a lot of work. But it’s nice to see how these stand up to daily wear and tear.

Just some constructive criticism, your camera picks up your voices really well and makes you very loud. If your trying to compensate for wind I think your camera is dealing with it very well so you don't have to speak so loud. :) Hope this helps for future videos. Not a huge complaint. Love you guys and your videos and hope to see more in depth reviews about RV life. You usually have to figure out on your own and you guys are saving alot of people

Prepped for solar plus solar panels with an inverter a UV water purification system built in instead of the portable we have and we have the Berkey like you do. We do have a Cummins Onan propane generator built in. That allows us to run the air conditioner boondocking. And we do have two 40 pound propane tanks and two 6 volt 200 amp hour batteries next time it would be lifepo which is lithium phosphate batteries.

Almost everyone giving you advice on what is best for you but I think you were asking for people to post what THEIR must haves are. Mine are common to what several people have said so far. 1. A slide out for more walk around room inside. 2. Ability to get to the bathroom and fridge with the slide out in. 3. A grey water tank larger than our current 30 gal. 4. Power tongue jack 5. Solar battery charger (ours came factory installed) 6. 4 seasons "arctic package"

My wife and I have a 32' class C motorhome with a max air fan and day and night shades. I agree those are must have items. Our Jayco Grayhawk have both as standard features, but worth the upgrade if required. We don't have double pain windows which significantly reduce heat loss in cold weather and heat gain in cold.

Since you’re full timers I think a nice 5th wheel, toy hauler would be perfect for you. You could use the garage for your office area and for storing all your pet food and supplies. That frees up the rest of the storage areas, inside and out, for the two of you.

  • @johngillette463

The fore and aft bed alignment was the only real must have. We did the crawl over routine too often in the tent trailers we previously had. Almost all have some kind of bench on the head end of the bed sides now. Which we wanted for CPAP machines. But those can be easily built. (one came with a lifting lid as a "laundry chute.") A few models had a "king-size bed that filled almost out to the walls. Not for us. The walk around space allows for storage and avoids the challenges of putting sheets on when you can't get around.
A lot of rigs doubled up on the recliner type chairs and no dinette table. That was almost a deal killer if we had gone for a slide unit.
Murphy beds gave more usable floor space at the cost of storage and adding the mechanism weight. Slides add a large amount of weight. Some had windows all around, but Ro will like that most sacrificed one of the side windows for a hang up clothes closet you could actually hang clothes in.

Our 24' No Boundaries travel trailer has a Murphy bed. We really want a dedicated bed. We also want the windows that open out rather than sliders so we can open the windows when it's raining. Things we'll add-composting toilet, more solar (our NoBo came with 100 watts), a second battery or lithium batteries, more propane capacity-we have a single 20 # tank hook up with a spare 20# tank in the bed of our truck.

  • @mollymalone4794

A slide is an absolute must. Access to bed from both sides is also important. Also, 4-season, even if we don't plan to camp in the snow, snow happens! Also, the 4-season RVs are made a little sturdier.

We stay in a Lance 2375 travel trailer most of the time. All last year. It fortunately has a lot of the things you mentioned in the video. I would say an electric heater/fireplace will be in my next RV. Storage is another option I wish we had more of. The cap on our truck was a huge help. We don’t do a ton of boon docking. No more than a week at a time. I totally agree will all the holding tank storage too

Excellent list. As someone who bought a weekender travel trailer in October, I love that it is possible to buy an "entry level" budget friendly trailer, then add all the customization items we want. Obviously there are some critical things like counter space that are structural and cannot easily be retrofitted into a trailer. But almost everything else can be added later on, and usually cheaper to install yourself rather than paying the premium upgrade prices at a dealership.

I boondock 99% of the time. I'm a widowed astro-imager so my RV satisfies my astronomy need by giving me a place to stay for 30 -45 days at a time. I do this 3 to 4 times per year making the trek from NC to Southern Arizona since 2017. I have a 16 foot RV that meets my needs. However, my next RV would have:
-Dual axel. With a single axel if a tire ever blows the underside of the RV is totaled.
    -Pass-through storage. Mine does not.
    -Max-fan. I also installed mine
-A non-skin/rubberized roof. More solar installing options.
-DC outlets and USB/quick charge. Mine had AC plugs only. I installed the dc and USB quick Charging ports
-A 3-way power Fridge or better yet --slot to roll a dual-zone compressor fridge/chest such as an Iceco or solar-powered Acopower. Standard RV fridges suck.
-Backup camera on the RV. I installed my own
-Day/night roller shades - I installed the same as yours per your review :-)

Our must haves include a large window on the camp side. A/C controlled by thermostat. Large shower. Separate bedroom. Couch or chairs to sit comfortably to watch TV - not just dinette for TV viewing. Able to access refrigerator when you make rest stop. This way we can make sandwiches and get our drinks. Power jacks are a new requirement for us. No angled wall at head of bed.

Took us years and went through 4 trailers before we finally found the trailer my wife and I both love. Rockwood. 30’ lite weight trailer under 8000 lbs. We will never own a trailer again without slide outs or aluminum framing. Loaded with extras that are standard in their trailers. Rockwood and Flagstaff are the same trailer. We paid a little more than the budget we started out with but ended up being the best decision we ever made. We got the front kitchen 2608 model that had tons of counter space and cabinets. Bedroom has a full closet and 2 entrances to the bathroom. A perfect couples trailer. A lot of trailer for under 30’.

Another vote for Outdoors RV. Minimum of 80 gal fresh and 40 gal black + 40 gal gray, large dual LP tanks, good storage, good for solar/Li conversions, good insulation, MaxAire fans, full pass through, dual pane windows, independent suspension with shocks, high quality tires, and some floorplans with "rear living" have the large windows in the back. Since you are handy, you could also convert the slide out dinette, which had large windows on 3 sides, into a desk area.

i've been following you guys since the beginning, and I've always been sympathetic that you both live full-time in a fairly small space. And I've always admired how you've made do with what you've got, and all the upgrades that made it as good as it could possibly be.
I remember the episode long ago, when you installed the solar/lithium/inverter system in the pass-through - and I remember feeling sad that you had to sacrifice all that space in the pass-through for the equipment. At the time, I was shopping for my own trailer for full-time living, and it made me understand that these upgrades take a lot of space, and a slightly larger trailer would be needed to allow all the upgrades.
You both absolutely *deserve* a bigger trailer. I hope you can make it happen.

Sweetie is the greatest! I would recommend you guys have a look at a rear kitchen Keystone Cougar 5th wheel. Around a 28 to 30 feet. You guys have a 2500 series truck that could pull it easily and the trailer would double your closet space, give you a huge pass through storage area along with plenty of up front room for your solar equipment. It would also give all of you (pets included) a little more interior room that you could certainly use. You'll be able to continue boon docking with a Cougar as well.

I have many "MUST HAVE" items for an RV; but the thing that I absolutely "MUST HAVE" is portability in the back country. I need to be able to go off the beaten path, to travel miles and miles down bumpy dirt and rock roads, and to get to places the highway just won't show you. In order to achieve that I have to give up a lot; having said that, I am not a full time RV-er. I weekend warrior my camper. My list therefore is necessarily different; and I am sure that if I were living full time in my RV then my list would more than likely mirror yours.

If you're shopping, check the Grand Design 2500RL. Love ours. Same size as yours, huge openable windows, passthru storage (I have my lithium and charge controller indoors behind the converter), 2 gray 1 black that can be combined, and everything else you wanted. Clothes storage is only minimally more. It has a slideout that I know you're not a fan of, but the trailer is still 99% usable (just inconvenient and one inaccessible cabinet) if the slide were to break.

I would also never have the dealer install solar - what you can install yourself is so much better!
I’m jumping up to a kw on the roof, and 200w of portable panels!!
I’ve been using the Victron equipment, and once I go to lithium I’ll go with their Multiplus inverter / Charger. Thankfully I have an area in the back I can tuck it into where I won’t take up my pass through.

My must have (which as far as I know no RV manufacturer offers) is heat tape on the fresh water lines. I have been living full time in my 1977 '16 foot camper for nearly 10 years now. I do fairly well when the temperature drops. However, if it drops below 0F (-18C), my plumbing still freezes up. Next week the temps will drop down into that range and so I have water cans filled and ready, but it would be better if I could get some heat on those lines. Unfortunately, by necessity, the plumbing runs through the base of the exterior walls, where they are both the coldest part of the camper as well as the hardest area to access.

You also need good construction, we wanted a smaller trailer, i had a hrc next level toy hauler. I sold it an started looking. Im going to tell you that Rockwood or flagstaf is a good buy. They are ruged made withe alumium frame on 6 sides come with things standard that you have to pay extra for in a lot of trailers. We were going to by a 29 ft tt. But i started looking on the net on rvtraders
I found a 32 ft 5 wheel i paid 22000 for it. We really like it. If i were wyou i would look and go through the factory. They come standard with a lot of things, max air, wifi router goodyear endurance tires, tire presure mot. Sys, water filter, tv, heated tans, now they are light weight two with good ground clearance. Our 5wheel dry is 7600 lbs or so max weight is 9600lbs, now i have a 1996 f350 power stroke stroke dualy. The pin weight on the trsiler is 1500 lbs. Im telling you i cant tell its back there. It also came with trosion axles. You owe it to yourselves to really look at the product. Ours is a 2016 and doesnt have all the up grades but we are 74 and would not get the full use out of new. Ours has an outdoor kitchen too.

It sounds like what you want is a bigger trailer. That's the only way I can think of for you to get the additional storage and counter space over what you already have. You already have done a good job figuring out how to tweak the trailer you have to max those out.
I'm about a year out from buying a travel trailer, doing homework now. Thank you for your channel and videos -- they are part of my homework. I'm looking for a trailer that I might end up living in 3-6 months out of the year while working seasonal work, sometimes by myself and sometimes with my spouse and two teens along. I want to stay under 26 feet in length, NO SLIDES, TWO AXLES, realistically will sleep 4 full grown adults that need elbow room (a 60"-wide queen plus two other beds at least 72" long and 32" wide each) without stepping on anyone to get to the toilet in the middle of the night, ample fresh water tank (preferably NOT the smallest of the 3 water tanks) as I will boondock whenever possible, bumper-pull. I am actually looking at smaller toy-haulers as well as travel trailers, since toy haulers have some very versatile and reconfigurable space. If I go the toy-hauler route the teens might get air mattresses for their bed bases. Any actual beds must be able to take mattresses 8" thick without stuffing our faces into a slope or ceiling. Windows near the beds should be high enough to accommodate this, plus I don't want my pillows against a window -- I need a wall there to act as headboard. (I am quite surprised by how many trailers now are on the market with thin mattresses, windows whose bottom edges touch the thin mattress, and windows at the head of the bed so pillows will smash blinds or bug screens.) I would also appreciate a square or rectangular sink instead of a round one, as round sinks are much more difficult to wash up pots and pans in. (Round sinks are apparently quite in vogue now. Yes, they give corners of counterspace back, but I'd rather have those corners in the sink. I can make a cover to gain back some counter space.)
There are other features or things I would like, but those are mostly things that can be added later if need be. Like a whiteboard option that can be stowed out of the way... (in addition to writing on my windows with dry erase markers).

...if you are changing the RV, I believe you need to find out what Sweetie likes!
...it’s amazing how your videos really get me hopeful and eager to get out and start boondocking: planning to start late coming spring when I get my work done on my old 17ft trailer!

I would get two recliners with a drop in table instead of the dinette table ,.. I'd look for storage for solar batteries , larger water supply 35 gal doesn't go far . Microwave convection oven and most important , more insulation ...it gets hot and cold in there

Great video (as usual!). Thank you for all your work. Near the end, David listed TT, 5th wheel, motorhome, as possible "new units." It quickly brought to my mind an earlier video where you shared how you pack your pickup. We just purchased a tow truck (8 ft bed) for our future RV. If I had a top, it would be a HUGE storage garage. However, we're going with a 5th wheel, so most of that would be lost. I think your best choice would be a slightly larger TT to keep the truck storage. Just MHO!

Consider a small fifth wheel, 30ft or less, some of the brands have light weight 5th wheels that are even shorter. They are usually less than 12ft tall. Your 3/4 ton truck can pull one since you have a diesel. Dealers may tell you a half ton pickup can pull one but I would be very suspicious of those claims. You'll gain a lot of storage space, counter space, and desk space area (remove the sofa for work space). Your pets would enjoy the larger space as well. You would be able to leave your large fresh water tank in the front of your pickup bed just like it is now. You could also do like I did and mount a propane bottle rack right behind your water tank. I carry four 20lb bottles for my propane powered generator and as spare bottles for my 5th wheel, if needed. You can still carry your small generator in the storage bay too. Your e bikes can be put on a rack on the back of the 5th wheel like I would do if I were you. BTW I boondock pretty much exclusively in a 35ft 5th wheel with Battleborn batteries and solar with a small generator as a backup to the solar. I already had a large diesel pickup (F350 single rear wheel 4x4) when I bought this 5th wheel. I bought mine with full timing and exclusively boondocking in mind and knew solar and battery bank would be critical to my plans along with large tanks. Also wanted a floor plan that would allow me full access to restroom and bed, and at least some access to refrigerator without putting any slides out. I spent over 6 months researching because I only wanted to buy an RV once, set it up for boondocking (BLM and NFS) and use it for many many years to come. Send me a message if you would like to discuss this in much greater detail over the phone. I would love to share what I have learned with you. I love your videos and have seen them all. Keep up the great work as you are helping others out here achieve their goals.

We are in the planning stages. 2-3 years out. My definite requirement is a separate bedroom with a real door. Next is the kitchen counter space! Thanks for the day/night shades too, I made a note.

Hi guys! Been watching your stuff for awhile. Wanted to share that we just upgraded our trailer as well and we went with an Outdoors 24rls Titanium package. Outdoors make there RVs specifically targeting boon docking. Suspension, frame, very large tanks (80 gallons of fresh), solar. All of the things you talked about in this video they have in their Rvs. I think their Rvs might be a very good fit for your life style. Just a thought, check them out. We love ours!

Hi David and Roe. It kinda sounds like you guys would benefit from upgrading to a fifth wheel. You’d lose some space in your pickup bed but you would gain a ton of storage on the trailer. And you would also get bigger holding tanks as well.

David and "Roe," I have a tiny house on wheels that'd only 19.5 ft. long and it's got you covered, or me anyway. Pretty much everything you said is a must, I built into my tiny house. So if your thinking of upgrading, you may want to build a tiny house on wheels and lose the traditional RV. On a side note: I remember in the beginning when you lived on the ground, you two were massive ESO fan/players. So I wonder now what games you play, and if they're all stand alone games. Also, I was wondering if Roe did any voice work for Bethesda since every time I'm in the Dagger fall bank I see and hear you Roe. It's weird.

When we bought ours we thought we had everything we wanted. Huge counter space, centrally located vent fan, good size 3-way fridge, large dinette, bathroom and bed access with the slide in. But quickly learned what we didn’t have and couldn’t fix. I’m not a big guy, WET BATHS SUCK! The A/C is to powerful and LOUD for the space it cools. The last one could be fixed if it weren’t for the first two. Uncomfortable dinette. Thin cushions uncomfortable position. I think all RVers want more storage lol

Great ideas to think about. However, I find that most RV's have too many windows. With the addition of a roof window, you don't need as many wall windows for light. Especially the sleeping area, that's where I don't want any windows. I'm lucky I found a camper that has no windows in the front or rear, and 1 window on each side plus a roof window. Seems like all campers have a window on the door.
