  • Bill Durboraw wanted to have his Jackson Big RIg FD rigged with the Ultralight 1103AC for river fishing, but he didn't want to give up the pedal drive. This installation video shows how to set up the Ultralight 1103AC on a Big Rig FD with foot control steering in a way that the Flex Drive is still operational. Also, there's a trick to getting the Ultralight 1103AC to run as shallow as possible. It includes removing the profile on the motor shaft and cutting a section off on a band saw. This was done to allow the motor to be rigged closer to the waters surface, allowing the motor to continue operation into shallower water, which is Bill's requirement for river fishing. The end of the video is a river trial, that shows how an 8.4 mile trip on the Juniata River in Pennsylvania is possible without setting up a shuttle.

When the motor was under full power, it appeared the rear of the kayak was only inches from going below the water. I noticed similar results in your Yupik setup. Is it something that weight redistribution would fix. Or is it not really as close as the camera makes it out to be?

Tennessee Kayak Fishing All of these kayaks have scupper holes and are self bailing. I did have some concern with the amount of water around the rear hatch on the Big Rig FD at full throttle. I took a photo of it and showed it to Bill. He checked inside the hull and it was dry. The YuPIK has no hatches, so no issues there. When hatches do leak, the fix usually involves silicone around the hatch/hull interface and/or a fresh gasket. Sometimes a gasket has a weak compression and adjustments to the lid or latch need to be made. But rest assured that the motor won’t sink a sit on top kayak the way it might swamp an open boat like a canoe.
