The true measure of a mimic's talent is if he never has to TELL the audience who he's doing; that the impersonation is so good that you KNOW who it is immediately. Kevin does a great job.

I only learned recently that Kevin Pollack was a stand-up comedian. I have been watching his terrific character acting on Prime's "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and enjoying him and the cast immensely. But this man is a true comic genius in what he did in this clip. Amazing!!
Wow! What an outstanding Robin Williams impersonation. I had no idea he was so talented. His Jack Nicholson was also brilliant. Not just the voices but his mannerisms. He had Kirk down to a very comedic T.

What makes Pollack's impressions so much fun is that he doesn't try to be _identical_ to the person he's impersonating. He does their defining characteristics at about 120%, and you can't help but laugh at how distinctive each of the actors is. His Kirk is the funniest I've ever seen because of his ability to exaggerate Shatner's acting quirks just enough.
I had tears in my eyes from laughing so much at his impersonation of James Kirk. You are absolutely right - it's the exaggeration of the little characteristics that make it funny.

Mostly because he doesn't go for the catchphrases -- he plays the "calm" Nicholson, the snarky Nicholson, the one who is BUILDING to the "You can't handle the truth" and "here's Johnny" lines, without ever getting there. I first saw this in 1989 on HBO, and it is still one of the funniest stand up routines I have seen. You know what? Shatner has admitted he used to take his time with his lines because he was rehearsing them in his head and trying to remember them. At least in TOS.
@SmithandJones256 The fact that most people in watching TV/Film in the 70s and 80s could tell you who Shatner was, and even when someone was doing even a even shoddy impersonation of him, should tell you how well known he was. His distinctive his mannerisms are a massive part of that. He stood out.

This routine and this show was absolutely brilliant. I remember seeing it when I was a kid, and I have never forgotten it. A classic standup. To my mind, nobody does Shatner / Kirk as well as Pollack. All the other impersonations were perfect as well.
He's so good at impressions that the audience was laughing even before he started doing "Dr. McCoy" Just the look on his face told you who he was parodying.

True story...met him after a show one night. My mother was with me but didn't want to be in the photo in the autograph line. He does the "Arthur" voice in front of the whole line while saying "No worries ma'am...just two grown men grabbing each other's asses."
Clearly you haven't seen all the odd numbered ones. Although I will grant that Star Trek: The Motion Picture is forgivable because they were trying to make an overlong episode, Star Trek 3: the Search For Spock is pretty decent, and Star Trek: Generations is pretty decent too.

I recorded this on VHS tape from Comedy Central back in 93'ish and used to watch it over and over. I've never seen someone nail Kirk as good as this. First time I've seen this in over 20 years and I laughed as hard as I ever had back then!
Such facility. I remember watching this somewhat close to real time...at least close enough to laugh hard at the Brian Boitano finale....it set the standard very high for parody with substitutions (if that is the term for this?)...No one has ever topped this Shatner...or Rev Jim, for that matter, and Dudley Moore in engineering, brilliant!

Some stuff in this routine is episode specific while a lot was his "normal" day to day self . Now that you've seen this I'm sure you'll recognize stuff in future watching of TOS . Cheers !

Think about Kirk imploring some menace on the view screen to spare his ship . His crew . Can't you "see" the hand gesture ? The swinging face , admittedly , is exaggerated to a high degree to properly spoof Shatner's own exaggerated acting style . Are you just curious of specific examples ? You're not being defensive ? Because Pollack's impression comes from LOVE of the character and the actor . For me , James Kirk is , easily , in myTOP 5 , in Pop Culture/fictional characters , across ALL media , including Literature , Movies , TV , comic books , etc. THAT'S a lot of characters ! A lot of FANTASTIC characters ! But if I had to choose , among all these "characters ", if I had to pick just 5 , ULTIMATE HEROES , there would be a place for Kirk ! Would just HAVE TO BE , right ? I remember watching this somewhat close to real time...at least close enough to laugh hard at the Brian Boitano finale....it set the standard very high for parody with substitutions (if that is the term for this?)...No one has ever topped this Shatner...or Rev Jim, for that matter, and Dudley Moore in engineering, brilliant!

I saw this, the first time it was aired, on New Year's Eve - of what year, I don't remember. I laughed so hard, I had to run to the bathroom. I've thought about this years hence, and, now I finally thought to look it up. Not too bright. This is hilarious.

@@betaneptune That is classic Kirk , overplayed a bit to highlight Shatner's own "over the top" style , and that hand gesture when Kirk would be emphatic , almost pleading to be understood...you knew shite was serious when he did this . Some stuff in this routine is episode specific while a lot was his "normal" day to day self . Now that you've seen this I'm sure you'll recognize stuff in future watching of TOS .

@betaneptune Lol ! Like that hand gesture is episode specific. Maybe not just ONE episode , mind you , but not all the time , either . Think about Kirk imploring some menace on the view screen to spare his ship . His crew . Can't you "see" the hand gesture ? The swinging face , admittedly , is exaggerated to a high degree to properly spoof Shatner's own exaggerated acting style . Are you just curious of specific examples ? You're not being defensive ? Because Pollack's impression comes from LOVE of the character and the actor . For me , James Kirk is , easily , in myTOP 5 , in Pop Culture/fictional characters , across ALL media , including Literature , Movies , TV , comic books , etc. THAT'S a lot of characters ! A lot of FANTASTIC characters ! But if I had to choose , among all these "characters ", if I had to pick just 5 , ULTIMATE HEROES , there would be a place for Kirk ! Would just HAVE TO BE , right ? Now. I was very sad when I heard of the actors who portrayed other champions , like McCoy , Scotty and the much beloved , Mr. Spock had passed , but I know I will WEEP for Shatner, just as I wept at the death of Kirk , falling , at last , while selflessly fighting for and saving others . As he always had .
I couldn't help it , the character symbolized THAT MUCH to me.
So , we are laughing with him , not at him , so to speak ...Shatner. of course , NOT Kirk . Remeber this video in your subconscious...and you will see bits revealed as you re-watch TOS and think "aha. thats what that dude was talking about ! Sorry , I went off on a tangent ,there ! Lol. "JUST" wanted ya to know I'm true Kirk fan and wouldn't be laughing at him , Shatner really , maliciously . Just another way to enjoy the character/actor . Cheers !
