    This was such an interesting video Kim. Looking forward to seeing you again at SITC this year! I'm also planning on attending VidCon and Playlist Live next year! 😊👍🏻

    I noticed the same thing when I went to the San Francisco pride parade, I didn't get my bags checked and I didn't see anyone else get theirs checked either. We had to walk through a metal detector but the beeping was pretty much ignored. It was also so crowded that it was hard for security to really know what was going on.

      hmmm, that's still more than my town did, probably because i live in a pretty smallish town and our pride is pretty small too. im glad everything turned out okay though!

    I really want people to check bags and stuff at SitC, but I highly doubt they will. The security was pretty bad last year too.
    I definitely would have pretended I was a featured creator if I was you, haha.

    It must be really difficult to be a security staff member put in that situation, I really feel for them. I remember a couple of years ago I won tickets to an awards show and there was about 10 different types of wristband. I had one of the more obscure wristbands because about 100 people were being used as a backdrop for one of the performances. This wristband just happened to be the same colour as one of the mega VIP ones, except the mega VIPs had plastic wristbands in this colour and the people who were basically being extras had paper ones. It is a little scary when you have to tell the security that you're not allowed into the areas they're trying to let you into, at one point they almost let us go backstage.
    I think if I were a well known creator at VidCon, I'd feel a lot more comfortable if I paid for my own hotel and transport to the event. The thought of everybody knowing where I was staying would probably make me very uncomfortable even without the thought of them being able to visit me fairly easily.

      That's cool that you get to go to a concert! I think as far as having featured creators buying their own hotel and transport, i think that would be more dangerous (and expensive-since the conventions pay for hotel and transport for many invited guests) for the creators. It's a lot easier for fans to track one car to a random hotel where the staff hasn't been briefed (even if it's not been an overwhelmingly great explanation, the staff has been briefed). Something for sure needs to be done, but I don't think moving creators away from the same location together would necessarily help. (Granted, at both VidCon and SitC many creators live in the city and leave after the day's events to go home, and I've never heard of any problems from that so you might actually have a point). Thanks for the comment, it certainly added to the discussion!

      ***** Yeah, that's true. Maybe using a different hotel each year or one that's further away from the event would help in the short term, obviously there'd still be people trying to track them down but it is scary that it's common knowledge where to find somebody during their downtime.

    I'm very surprised to hear that security was like that, I thought Vidcon would be way above, this year in particular. From my experience with security (as an event, concert and nightclub photographer) they tend to be going from job to job and so never fully understand each one due to the amount they do. I've had to go to a few security briefings and they tend to be 'black wristbands all access, blue just downstairs...' etc. and I think working on the 'verbage' as you put it could be very useful as it would help prevent confusion, but they really need to step it up :/

    security who haven't been briefed on what the hell is happening has been the bane of my existence since i was like 15 and going to concerts for the first time. it's so bad! you'd think that with such a small amount of pass types they could've been well versed in who was who. i'd be interested to know if it's always been like this or if it's a more recent thing in terms of is it solely that the community has grown but they haven't changed the way they explain it to enforcement do you think? or is it just that they've changed the pass setup / way they enforce security and it isn't necessarily working? also idk if i've ever asked was this your first vidcon even tho you've done playlist and sitc? seriously good point regarding featured guests and how it could make them feel unsafe. as much as it's a big problem... surely explaining it a little better to the security team would fix it? the passes are color coded after all!

      Yeah, I would say it's a combination of things? Five years ago they wouldn't have needed to say 'these are the 'crazy' ones to watch out for' because fan culture didnt have as much of a mob mentality, but they also havent changed the verbage between 'creator' and 'featured creator' it would seem.

    • @lorieway
      @lorieway 8 років тому

      that's very true about the whole 'these are the crazy ones thing', agreed! yeah i get ya. i love that they do that and i get why they want to keep them similar, i mean, like on the website it says 'at vidcon it's hard to know where to draw the line between a guest and a creator' or something like that. if they could at least maybe be a bit more specific to the guards about the passes it might help them to maintain that equality that they're trying to promote yknow? they're completely different colors after all like seriously it's not hard hahaha (unless security is entirely made up of colorblind employees in which case i apologise and retract my statement)
