I really want to believe that I never felt any specific way about your content because of your complexion, but I honestly don’t know…
I have a tiny little channel on UA-cam myself where I try to put some content out but because of you and other creators like you, I do feel very intimidated… and a little insignificant… I am an older creator with a full time job and two kids, so I cannot put as much effort as you do into my videos. I just wanted to share that I have not been subscribed to you very long but I do look up to you because of the quality, variety and depth of your content.

Omg, I just made this exact statement to light-skinned friend of mine. I don't think he realizes the impact colorism has on our society and our psyche because he experiences all of the privileges. Unfortunately, colorism isn't going anywhere, anytime soon, however, the effects can be minimized. I think having these conversations is a step in the right direction. Instead of ignoring the problem and living in denial; acknowledgment and trying to make difference moving forward, is imperative. The key is representation and inclusivity despite hues of skin tone, facial features etc., as well as education and policy changing/making to some extent and ofc introspection, to acknowledge personal biases but humans hate doing that shit. Idk🤷🏽‍♂️

It broke my heart when I saw that study where little black girls chose white dolls over black dolls because they thought the black dolls were ugly. It changed my whole perspective. It opened me up to the notion that our culture imprints these racist ideas onto our minds from birth. I did realize that I automatically had those same biases despite knowing better. The added danger is, as you say, how the algorithms use this information to reinforce these ideas for clicks on UA-cam. I regret it took me so long to find these essays.

It's not learned behaviour though. Babies look at lighter faces.. it's to do with light reflection and not racism. The studies done were not conducted to find out which baby is racist but about vision.
Even without any european influence much of the world liked light skin even thousands of years ago. And esthetically each culture has their preferred type of features , nothing wrong with that. The little kids likely picked white dolls because of all the primary colours on it - yellow red and blue - hair, lips and eyes.

to the other white people in the comments looking to shift your algorithms: mine started changing a lot when i started not only subscribing to more black(/POC) creators and watching their videos, but then when i started actively clicking on the videos from different black(/POC) creators in the sidebar once i'd finished a video... and then watching *that* video and clicking through the sidebar again etc

Colorism is definitely a thing, as a light skin woman I can admit that. Do you know how many men (often dark skin men.) have told me they wouldn’t be interested In me if I was dark? I know I get treated differently bc most ppl don’t even see me as black due to my features. Light skin privilege is a thing and it would be ignorant to deny the colorism that goes on both in general and within the black community. Mixed women are always being pushed to the forefront in media/advertising and being considered black representation bc it’s more digestible to white ppl. It’s now ‘cool’ too look racially ambiguous. It’s a trend that encourages colorism. I hate that we have to say things like “black is beautiful” as if it isn’t an already inherent fact. I’d love to see more diversity In dark skin black representation that doesn’t fall under the usual black stereotypes in media. I’d love to see dark skin be normalized. They’re usually dark-skinned. Dark skinned actors usually seem to play “fallout” characters, (characters that the other cast members deride and make fun of,) and I remember I used to wonder, watching as a kid, what was supposed to make these characters “ugly,” or why they weren’t featured as often... I never knew it was because of the color of their skin! But now it seems so obvious, which is really sad and also unfair to darker-skinned actors in Hollywood. 😢

We went to one of those neighborhood beaches to chill for the weekend. There were a lot more white people there than other. When I tell you… okay, at the bar by the pool, one girl was drunk and she complimented me and said I looked beautiful. However, I knew it was coming and she asked me “How long did it take you to do your hair? I know you girls spend all day at the salon”. In the hot tub, another girl asks me and my friend if we’ve ever been called Ebony and Ivory. I can’t make this up! Its been that weird energy the whole weekend. I had the feeling I was a “safe black” when seen with my friend. So naturally, I was furious when it sunk in and explained it to my friend when we got back to the room. I can’t lie, I got a bit emotional. For people to say we talk about race so much, they are THE FIRST ones to bring it up. I’m a normal person man.

I'm Italian and some time ago I was watching a video by a black Italian beauty influencer in which she reported how beauty companies would send her make up (especially foundation) to sponsorise on her channel that was always too light for her skin tone. Her video went in depth about it and I don't want to go there, what I wanted to point out was the amount of white women (like myself) telling how they went through the same thing being too light skinned.
What!?! One thing is to try to put yourself into someone else's shoes and another is to compare some inconvenience that you've experienced to a lifetime of bullying.

Your comment about dark skin women having to be exceptionally beautiful (especially in the media) is such an interesting point. I see alot of comments on social media (your videos included) where people will say "Oh she's so pretty" and there's an unspoken "for a dark skin person". Why can't they just be beautiful/handsome without factoring their race or complexion?

    • @Laladust
      @Laladust 3 роки тому +13

A lot of times it's not unspoken. Not sure if you know the series Girlfriend's, but the character Toni refuses to date anyone darker than her because "if we had a daughter she'd be darker than me and I don't want her hearing she's 'pretty for a dark skinned girl' her whole life like I did"
Toni ultimately marries a white man, and has a daughter. During Toni's entire pregnancy the babies ultimate "good hair" is discussed ad nauseum. In fact when the baby is born that's Toni's first concern. Not her health, weight, alertness, exc... "She has good hair!!!!"
Toni even refers to her baby as "high yellow" which is grotesquely outdated and racist.

Shouldn’t be put on quotes, the algorithm is literally made FOR that, to cater to YOU, of course you have to train it. For example, I’m a white girl, on the curvy side, I noticed I only followed skinny people (all colors, but skinny) I felt bad, then I started to follow more girls like me, it definitely made a change. I didn’t feel sad while browsing social media anymore, but then you have to think for yourself and self reflect and ask, am I following these people because that’s what I SUBSCONSCIOUSLY WANT? My answer was yes, I wanted to be like those skinny girls so I "punished" myself. But then I accepted myself and started reversing my choices. Made a real change. Most some people just never move past that, what they subconsciously want versus the REALITY. Acceptance is the first step.

I think you may have it confused. Not caring about someone's race isn't bad. The comment most akin to sounding how I think you mean would be "I don't see color", commonly used by people who probably don't care about someone's race as it isn't indicative of character, but aren't ware of the privilege they possess to say that they don't see color bc the latter sounds like them saying color isn't a determining factor of how people are treated and perceived in the world, no matter the content of their character.

    • @elfdc7722
      @elfdc7722 3 роки тому +5

@@jama3997 so I am a white liberal, who grew up in a white liberal area and both of those, more commonly your version, are things I have heard said. So, if it is being used in a different context, to the one I have experienced, to make other people feel safe and protected from systemic racism than yeah that's great, I just haven't been exposed to that cause I'm white
The problem I have with the term is, in my experience, it is it is a very simplistic response to a quite complicated topic and reveals the individual's lack of understanding on said topic but, more importantly, it functions as a response to discussions about racism and shuts it down. It is a waste of time because sure you don't care or you don't see colour but somebody else does, other people do and we where focusing on those people. I get that you have the privilege to miss the little things (because so do I) but this isn't about us, it's about the people who don't have the "privilege" to be treated with basic human rights so can we go back to the topic at hand.
Not caring about race is what we should all aspire to do but, in my experience, nobody who genuinely says that actually is uncaring about race and why does that one person's attitude matter in discussion about systemic problems. Because I have only seen either of these used in relation to discussions about racism and as a way to shut them down
It might be different in less white liberal circles, cause I get exposed to people who are just apathetic to issues and don't actually want to consider them properly despite siding with change more often than not, but that has been my experience and why I personally can not stand the term. It has just been used as a waste of my time and I get annoyed on others behalf
It's an in-between not out right supporting anti racism but trying to be against racism on an individual level, without actually putting in the effort to properly support people of colour, and it fails because it was never meant to succeed

Latinoamerica has a problem with colorism. I´m peruvian so I talked from my country´s perspective, but most of this problem is rooted in colonialism. Natives who were part of the royal family ended up marying colonizers in order to not get killed like the Inca and keep themselves safe. The first mixed race kid was actually the daughter of THE colonizer Francisco Pizarro and an indigenous princess. Mixing was something that spanish colonizer saw as positive, because if native people mixed an certain amount of times they would ended up being white at one point. This obssesion with mixing is sadly alive, you can hear some peruvians (and latinos in general) say things like " You can´t be with this person cuz you have to improve your race" or " you want your kids to look like that?" when you mention that you like someone brown/black.

Privilege is a sliding scale, it's often not an all or nothing situation; for example being a woman is a disadvantage but being a woman who isn't white is definitely harder and it needs to be talked about. Going so far as to them having a total pass to even use the N word (Cardi B) in their music. Nobody makes a connection as to how that contributes to colorism? Really? First it's no black people are represented in mainstream outlets, then it's nit enough black people are being used, to now it's the "wrong kind" of black people are being used but we're gonna pretend a light skinned Hispanic woman is sufficient representation for black women while complaining actual black women with dark skin are being left out? Come on now. Do dark black people ever think about the problems they're causing for lighter skin black women? Ever stop and think about boycotting movies all together? I live in a predominantly black place and colorism here is very different from the USA, but that's another topic. I like to watch international shows but recently I found it very difficult to stomach African American shows anymore.
When I was young there were very many AfAm family comedies with black people of very many hues on TV, and its like it got... worse? Underground, Lovecraft County, Euphoria, every movie Amandla is in the black women who were the romantic leads were getting lighter and lighter and lighter. It's like even the 'middle brown tone' is being phased out lol. I then stumbled upon Snowfall.
The lead dude had a great deep complexion and that's when it happened. Not even 30 mins into the episode his dark skin mother had ALL THE PROBLEMS and his cute next-door neighbor was teetering on racial ambiguity (despite her dad being black af) and I just switched off. I'd had enough. This isn't to insult the actors but heavens!

I am so with you on the white shirt thing!!
My degree is in theatrical Directing and part of what I studied was lighting and how to achieve balance in an image. White shirts are THE WORST. While I was working on my final few shows I made the immediate rule that we would use absolutely no white in our costumes because I just wasn't willing to deal with the lighting.
Also, I've had a lot of theatre professionals legitimately complain because it's "harder" to style and light actors with dark skin. If you're reading this and you hear someone say something like that, do me a favor and smack them. It's not harder, it's different, and we were trained using whiteness as a standard. Nobody needs to be making black actors/performers/creators feel bad about that.
If you live in a major city and need help learning how to better represent different skin tones in your work, look around for groups that represent or work with a lot of BIPOC creators and ask if someone is willing to help you. Arts folk are nice but don't take it personally if the first person you ask isn't available. (It's no one's job to educate you but your own)
I'm not even sure why I started writing this but I wanted to give some thoughts on people's challenges lighting darker skin. Anyway! Loved the video!

It’s something that as a fat disabled woman, I feel deeply. Do I put extra effort into looking very polished just because I feel I’m already starting from a lower baseline? Yes. Yes I do. And it’s all tied up with sexism, with how women often feel like we have to decorate the world with our beauty, so if I’m already less beautiful as a fat wheelchair user, I’d best put in that extra effort in order to do my part, ya know? It’s not usually as thought through as that, but having dug deep into my psyche about it, that’s where I’ve ended up.
I feel like I’m order to get the same respect (or let’s be honest, not the same level, but any) respect as a disabled fat woman, I’d best be putting my best foot forward at all times. I need to “clean up well” otherwise I’m looked over as if I’m invisible. And I’m not just talking by men, I don’t give a sh!t about men, but people generally. If I put more effort in, I’m more likely to be talked to directly, as opposed to someone talking to whoever is pushing my wheelchair.
But it’s a LOT of effort, and that effort is even harder because of my disabilities. I still do it though. And it’s like it’s tainting something I really love. Dress history, makeup and fashion are some of my passions. But feeling like I HAVE to put in extra effort every single time I leave my house, it taints something that I do genuinely love.

I am very glad I found your channel, it has so many interesting topics that I do not usually think about in my daily life.

"They talk about how beautiful I am...", I TOTALLY understood where youre coming from!! I don't know how many times I've heard "OMG you're so pretty for a Dark skin girl", or men saying "I usually don't date Dark skinned girls, but you bad'' or my skin tone is fetishized ...I hate it here on Earth 😂

I've actively tried to seek out content from darker-skinned black women (Khadija, AsToldByKenya, amandabb) because hearing their perspective really helped me confront my own implicit biases and understand how even though I never tried to be intentionally racist, I nevertheless was unconsciously benefitting from institutional racism and perpetuating the same structure without totally realizing it. The analogy I try to use is if I tell someone my house is clean, but I'm only looking at the walls around the house, whereas someone standing on a ladder could see that my roof was dirty and covered in debris. It's not that I was being disingenuous in my opinion, but more so they had a perspective that I didn't and without it that perspective, my was opinion on how clean my house was was based on an incomplete picture. I'm always grateful for content like this that's not only enlightening, but also entertaining at the same time. Also, you don't need to pull off a white shirt because you've looked killer in every color you wear. Have a blessed Sunday!

I just want to say as a dark skinned film student I can tell you that lighting darker skin tones is pretty hard a lot of it has to do with colour science and colour temperatures but it takes a lot of practice and a lot of lights to do so. I think you are doing a great job with you lighting and with your channel overall. Keep doing what you are doing.✨

my Filipina friend recently discussed with me the colorism they have there. that as a darker skinned Filipina, her grandmother told her to marry a light skinned man so her children wouldn't be as dark, and her mother used to give her skin lightening cream. This was when she was a child, mind you. awful.

I mean, I'm from Spain, my youtube location is Spain, and my language Spanish and youtube doesn't even dare to recommend me Spanish creators, and that's the info I have chosen, I guess the algorithm just doesn't care also I started to look up for black women channels since youtube has never recommended black creators and after getting more educated in marxism and black marxism I wanted to hear your voices and opinions since I was a bit done with the books, cause the longer I think about it the more I realize I haven't been exposed to black people at all, opinions, point of view, struggles, etc, after watching a lot of videos picked by me, youtube finally recommend me your video which was odd (title lmao) and I'm so thankful, I love your content in fact right now I am binge-watching your videos and most importantly I'm learning a lot, thank you and all the love from a little town in the south of Spain❤️

The only thing the separates Spain and Africa, is an earthquake and antiquity. African Moors ruled Europe (mostly Spain and Portugal) from 711 AD to 1492 AD. They are responsible for civilizing Spain and Europe, although Spanish rulers have tried to erase this from historical records. The African Moors are responsible for bringing Europe out of the Dark Ages. Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography and Philosophy were introduced to Europe, while 99% of the European population were illiterate up until the 1800s.
Public utilities, hospitals, universities that issued educational degrees, public libraries, public baths, botanicals, paved roads, illuminated streets, and hygiene maintenance, existed in Africa before Europe. It was through the Moors, paper and Arabic numerals were introduced to Europeans. Africa has the world's oldest spoken and written languages, and the birthplace of advanced mathematic concepts that are still learned in schools today.
Medical procedures performed in ancient Africa before Europe: vaccinations, autopsy, limb extraction and broken bone setting, bullet removal, brain surgery, skin grafting, filling of dental cavities, installation of false teeth, Caesarean sections, anesthesia and tissue cauterization. Architecture, engineering, mining of minerals, metallurgy and tools, navigation, law and religion, philosophy, international trade, and art were surpassed to those in Europe.

"You can be average an be considered cute"" giiiiirl you hit the nail in the head of fashion industry today, I see a lot of "exotic looking" white people beinge praised for nothing, I saw an average looking white girl on Instagram and just because she had bush "monobrown" she's was considered a high fashion model, and I literally though "if that was a dark skin woman she would never be considered high fashion or the """it thing"''"""" , cause I know a lot of dark skin people are considered "exotic" just for being dark skin
I hope my comment made sense for y'all

I’m so happy I found your channel. I am also a very dark skinned woman. I started off lighter as a child and then my melanin started to take over. I was ridiculed as well. Even told that I was dirty and wasn’t taking good enough baths and such. You are speaking my whole life story down to people not expecting me to speak the way I do, act the way I do and like the things I do.
I’ve spent so much time hating my skin so much that when I could I bought skin lightening products. The only reason I didn’t use them is because I like research and at the last minute (these were very emotional purchases) I decided to do research and didn’t feel like having potential burns were worth it. It didn’t help that my mother is very light skin beautiful woman. I would have to make my own video to get into all of that.
I didn’t start liking my skin until I got with my current partners. Where my skin is loved and when summer comes around and my skin gets even darker it’s admired instead of shunned. I feel bad about it as I get older because I’ve always been the mirror image of my grandmother, like if you look at a picture of use at the same ages you would think we’re the same person. I never considered her to be ugly and she always told me I was a beautiful young girl and should walk with my head up. I wish she were alive to see how I’ve changed and come into my skin. Ok, I’m done with my emotional rant on a UA-cam vid.

You have made me question my own implicit biases. Thank you.

      ask Oprah
she had to get a different lighting design team JUST to look good on her own show
      and it looked great
it's like when you hear about actresses having to take their own makeup and hair to any photo/video shoot
**twice the work for half as much**
