  • An update video explaining what's been up with me in the past 6 months. So much has happened and while I'm not at 100% yet, I just wanted to share that I do have plans to create content in 2024.

Good luck in earth science skills.
Since you do well in physics and calculus series. There will be doing general chemistry series, geology and earth science class. Glad you did c programming.

Just discovered your channel and I hope all the success to your new endeavors. A long time ago I also moved out of academia, without finishing my PhD, and ended up on the world of strategic consultancy (I joined McKinsey). And I had lot of colleagues that were either physicists or mathematicians, and even other areas. Take a look into it and see if you like it, even though you already have a job.
Also I've decided to get back to Physics and finish the PhD, so in a way, my trajectory is the dual of yours.
Once again all the best and please take a look into McKinsey, BCG and Bain careers.

Welcome back and congrats on your new job! I'm a first-year astrophysics undergrad and your videos about your PhD and grad school experience has really helped me understand what that's gonna be like when I get there 4 years from now. I'm curious to know what it's like to work at NASA now that you have a job there, are you going to post videos on that?

It's pretty awesome working at NASA! Some of the projects I'm working on are unfortunately classified so I can't say too much about them, that's just the nature of work at times when working with the federal government. Related to that, I'm not entirely sure if I am/am not allowed to record while I'm on the center's property, but I do plan on talking to people in charge of social media there to see what is acceptable and will do my best to post on the things I am allowed to talk about :) Overall, co-workers are friendly and scientifically brilliant and am just stoked to be there!

Happy to see you back. YT did a rec on this post and glad they did. We old guys in tech were in the same position that you were in 6 months ago. My area was applied math and the early stage of computational neuroscience. I started to go into seismic image processing but going from Berkeley to Texas was not attractive. Bay Area was exploding with new tech including machine learning and I realized just how important applied math was as a foundation. I recall a PDE professor saying that we learned how to solve problems that are not real world but now we know how to teach ourselves the new stuff we need to know.

That's such a cool area of specialization! Applied math + computational neuroscience sounds fascinating and very applicable in today's world. I definitely think that having the ability to solve complicated problems in math/STEM in general is a valued skill, and the training in those subjects gives us the ability to learn the stuff we don't already know.
