I Quit TURO And Revealed My Hidden GPS TRACKING Solution

- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- Well Turo was a fun experiment, I made a few thousand dollars but it wasn't worth it in the end. Now that my cars are delisted and being sold off, I can finally show how they were GPS tracked while I'm removing it. I was using a simple setup called Bouncie that plugs into the OBD2 port, but completely hidden with an OBD2 splitter so they couldn't be removed. So far the Dart and Cayenne are sold, and the Durango and Fiat 500 shouldn't be far behind!

I always wired my trackers into the power seat harness, taped everything up, and stuffed it under the carpet. I knew where they were and still had a hell of a time finding them.
I had a feeling Turo wouldn't last long - seems like an awful lot of trouble and expense for very little gain. Good call.
It was a great way to liquidate money temporarily before tax season . And make ad revenue in the process
I hear a lot of people are quitting Turo... don't blame you. It's just not profitable enough. And car prices are going to be dropping in the near future... You played the game perfectly.
Yep I've held off on 2 purchases until the market goes back to normal. I'm hoping there might even be a bit if a dip below normal for a little while and maybe I'll be able to make both purchases in that time
@@CarAudioObsessions That is highly unlikely with all the pent-up demand right now. Recent analyst’s projections suggest the prices will decline by end of the year but stay about 10% higher than pre-pandemic.
@@andreyd8116 there's lots of factors that come into play, state of the economy etc. Only time will tell. I'm in no rush on either of them and I'm certainly not going to pay more than I think they're worth just from lack of patience.
@@andreyd8116 this prediction aged very poorly.
@@elesjuan which prediction exactly?
I’m relieved you got out of Turo. Your time is literally money, and if it’s not paying well, and taking up content making time, then time to move on. Good thing is you helped the viewers learn about Turo so they can understand what they are getting into
But his content made money even about Toro so that is illogical.
I bow to your logic, good point
@@edwardmartinez9459 That's exactly the point though - the song was over, so to speak, so it was time to get off the stage. He did Turo, made as much content as was really feasible/interesting from it, and it wasn't a self-sustaining enterprise on its own so he canned it.
@@runner3033 I agree.
I like seeing JR sell off some of his cars as that translates to more new cars and projects
I really appreciate your Turo experiment. I was considering and you confirmed my suspicions, so it saved time and hassle. Looking forward for what's coming next.
Glad to see you bail on the Turo enterprise. It seems like there's a lot of potential for one to make a living managing a small stable of cars but the problem is you are competing against large stables and full on businesses. It is not as "peer-to-peer" as Turo would want you to believe. It's good for people that have an extra car or 2 that's already paid off because you are not dependent on Turo for the earnings and can tell them to F-off of they raise their commission. So it could still be good for you JR, if you plan to keep some of those cars around. Obviously, it needs to be a long enough period to be worth listing it. You don't want to have to keep registering cars on and off Turo every month. I'm sure people will want to book a JR car when they come into Wichita and Turo can make exceptions to certain cars that are too old or have too much mileage since you are a featured host with storied cars. But how much can you make in a year for it to be worth it to you? I know that if I ever found myself in Wichita and needed a car, I would definitely try to rent a JR car.
It's all about location/market. Wichita is just not booming that much
@Lassi Kinnunen 81 peer to peer has nothing to do with frequency of rentals. I just don't like competing with full blown enterprises. And you would also need a handful of cars at least.
That was a short experiment but I guess you can tell pretty fast if Turo is something you want to mess with or not.
Good for you JR, that Turo service was a huge hassle for you.
Fancy seeing you here Mark!
@@StephenCole1916 I enjoy cars and trucks
@@titanicfilmsbymark and ships too!
Turo obviously was not worth it. You made the right call cutting your losses.
Hey Gabe glad to see you back walking. Nice T-shirt.
Please do a fleet update of the cars you have left. Also a shop update with what you doing to the building and want to do. The loft and detail area will be done when?
Gabe: Happy to you without the boot and on your own 2 feet again!! 🥾
JR: I had a feeling you were going to dump Turo after your "this is how much I'm making on Turo" video. Hope you're at least breaking even and/or making some money on selling those ex-Turo cars with the way the market is right now, I've even heard stories of complete junk selling for upwards of $7000, it's nuts. Also, shop's looking pretty clean after your selling some vehicles and getting rid of the scrap, now you have room to fill it back up again 😅
Cheers!🍻😉👍🏼
At least you tried your best!
It was a fun side project 🍻
Nice that you are breaking even on the sales so far! Also, Gabe is bootless!
Yes, I too noticed that Gabe has two workable arms. Go dude!
As long as you don't quit YT, we are all grand.
Hey it's Gabe..!!! Hi Gabe.. great tips J. many thanks..!!

Congrats, tough decision to know when to fold 'em. Suprised you are selling Cayanne. You will be down to forklift or scrubber. 8:01 Gabrial "was the no front and an option on this car?"
Don't blame you on quitting Turo. They sound just as bad as Uber except people get to beat the piss out of your car directly...
You did nail it back when you said you are really not in an area where the cars would be going out constantly, also 6 or 7 Darts or Civics may have been the save. A place like Phoenix all of your fleet would probably be rented daily. It does seem like an awful lot of work for little profit.
Missed an great chance to show the Rain-x windshield repair vs the other guys! Would have been a perfect comparison of which worked better.
I'll take the Rain-X any day.. The 3M says it can be used for multiple repairs but only had one curing strip. The Permatex doesn't even compare 🍻
@@WatchJRGo Fun. I have a Permetex kit and 5 chips in my 04 Camry windshield.
The 3M one is a major PITA. As soon as I saw the kit in JR's hands I was like "NOOOOOOOOOO". Hot mess.
Insurance will cover the cost of a windshield repair every time. I worked at Safelite for awhile. These diy kits are garbage compared to a proper repair. I've had to use my insurance to fix two windshields before and it never hurt my rate or anything and I had a warranty on the repair.
@@thagerdorn2009 I own 3 cars, but 2 are over 20 years old, and I only have collision.
The other is a totaled 2004 Camry and I will be dropping comprehensive when I get a salvage title, which I will try to do today.
However, it would cost $1.54 to add glass coverage to my only car with comprehensive, although I have only replaced 2 windshields in 22 years, for $220 each, so I about broke even! :D
Gabe's shirt is awesome!!!
🍻😉👍🏼
Same experience here. Turo was ok in the beginning, but they completely saturated the market and then the owners of the cars had to do a race to the bottom. Renting out vehicles for a few days at a time introduced a lower level of clientele which in the end made it not worth it. Made some descent money in the beginning, but the platform has many flaws.
Can I just point out that Gabe's t-shirts are hilarious? LOL

Gabe! Yay! When Gabe shows up you need a crowd cheering sound effect.

I admit I never looked into it, but now I kind of want to look at the bouncie for my 'fleet'. One of my concerns is my wife takes frequent out of state trips with our son and a tool like that could be great if there is a problem ranging from being able to maybe diagnose a simple problem from 300+ miles away, or even find them if they are along the road somewhere. $6 a month is not bad for something like that and it could be some nice insurance that I can help if needed.
Gabe's shirt is awesome! Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!
I saw an S10 Xtreme in my buddies neighborhood the other day and I instantly thought of you
I love every S-10 Xtreme ever built, there's another one in the parking lot right across the street from me 💯

@@Gabe-ABNCW3 my other favorite of yours is the qr code Rick roll. I had to pause the screen to see what it was and I died laughing when that came up on UA-cam.
Wear safety glass when cutting things above your eyes. I know a guy who lost an eye removing zip ties from under a dash. Almost identical to what you were doing.
Not worth the risk.
Nice to see Gabe back, and love his shirt. Why have you not interduce your new camera man? He seems to be doing a good job for you.
I’m not surprised that you are bailing on Turo but I am surprised that you are parting with the Porsche! You seemed to really like the vehicle and drove it a bunch. I know when they do have a problem that they are very expensive to fix even when you’re fixing it yourself. Oh well, on too the next vehicles! Thanks!
Can't wait to see the Cayenne tomorrow!
No!! I’ve got my first trip to KC next week and was looking forward to renting from you. Finally getting a chance to travel into that part of my territory!!
Early spring cleaning? How's the roof working out? Cool to see the "plan" move forward on to new projects and old projects. Sad to see that Cayenne go for sure. Very cool ride and color combo!
Thanks for the grind.
Wow, was shocked when the GT-R went up for sale. Stunned on the Cayenne too as much as you loved it. Actually thought the Atom would go before the GT-R too. Kind of shocked as much as you love the Saab that it’s going as well. A few of these I thought you’d never part with.
When cars don't bring in profit and don't bring in views its time to get rid of them. Plus with tax season coming right up he is probably buy some nice cars.
He is trying to collect money so he can purchase some expensive cars
Im excitied to finally see the rolls back rolling again
If I could hang out in the big shop with Watch JR Goes I would drink the shot of whiskey and the cold Bartle Skeets and puff on the Cannabis Cigars and get all schmoked up
You got out of car rental bizl before you needed a Keeps sponsorship. The right move in the long run thin rental margins/jerky customers need a biiiig fleet to pull it off. Very happy you got out mostly intact... that Porsche does seem to be a perfect compromise but you clearly are putting on your big boy accounting pants this month.. Only the best ahead for you i hope!!
I do not like the 3M windshield repair kit. I made the 3 turns after it touched the windshield and it created a huge crack. You also can't see the crack it is making because the bracket with the suction cups is in the way. I ended up replacing the windshield. Glad you could make it work.
JR where do you list your cars for sale? Looking for a car for a reliable car for a teenager. Love your videos.
Can't wait to see the S10 extreme done! Such neat little trucks.
Easy way to tell, if a windshield was replaced is to check the last number on the glass stamp. E.g. a 14 would indicate a 2014 production date
Good to see Gabe back
A quick job is a good job. Keep on truckin' JR. And best wishes.
Sort of funny that he describes the tracker as "can never be removed" and " in penetrable" as he clips it out. ;-)
Awesome videos JR. I was researching the Bouncie gps for my car. I'm not able to find the ones with the OBD2 wiring. Where did you find yours? Or are they for fleet only?
I had the same feeling. I almost think that the only people making good money off of this are ones with high-end luxury or high end performance vehicles. They can charge whatever the hell they want for however long, but people are willing to pay for the experience to rent those cars. It’s really not financially motivating with a Dodge Dart.
Nooooo I was waiting for the horror stories!!!
I too used those splitters but I used T Mobiles GPS.
After one guest let their dog trash the Dart interior and paint I was over it. 😢
@@WatchJRGo ohhhhh man. It was just a matter of time.
@@WatchJRGo I cannot believe someone would do that.
@@ShaneEwing, dog people just have different priorities. I had a friend using my van and the dog wrecked the lid on my center console and the display on my radio when she would stand on both to see out the windshield.
Also, living somewhere with off-leash dogs, even when I don't want them to, if I drive with my windows down the dogs all put their front paws up on the door, hoping for food.
Unfortunately. I didn’t see it working out well for you. Luckily you are a man of many hustles.
Gabe is alive!!!

From far, I thought Gabe was Mark Cuban

You’d think Turo would have tried really hard to make things work out for a UA-camr with a car channel. Obviously the market you live in is going to be a big factor, but they seemed to make it harder to succeed. Thx for sharing the experience, good, bad and ugly.
My suggestion is sell pretty much everything you can while prices are insane, they will drop soon enough and you will be able to buy what you like at a much lower price.
No they won’t… I am in the auto industry and we are years away from “normal” and honestly with everything else coming down the pipe in the industry I don’t think we ever get back to pre Covid.
@@sccarguy8242 It's very possible. However, the extreme shortages won't last forever, either car companies will get smarter about using fewer chips, or they will find other solutions. I am suspecting we might see some very stripper model cars where as much of the electronics are stripped out as possible. Volume will be king, and someone will want the crown!
@@OldManBadly you have it backwards, the OEM’s don’t want to make more cars, they are making more money selling less. Less incentives, less advertising, no ot at the plants, less wear and tear on the assembly lines, less long term warranty exposure… what they want is to make more profitable cars which mean more higher end cars, they make very little on the stripped cars you talk about.
The price on new cars will continue to climb, that plus folks aversion to electric will keep the current fleet of IC cars on the road for a long time and keep their prices high.
You also have to look at where used cars come from and it’s ex rental cars (for the late models) and off lease.. rental co used to sell around 40,000 miles now it’s 70-80, and it’s much less attractive for the dealers. That will take years to work through. As for leases we are two years into this which means we are towards the end of the typical 3 year lease cycle, which means the supply on those cars is going to start dropping like a stone.
Yes we knew this was coming
No sh¡t
You missed out, you should've driven the dump truck to the scrap yard.😆
I noticed a lot of people saying their splitter did not work both ends at the same time (or 1 end was for power only and not diagnostics) - do you have a brand that you purchased that works both ends simultaneously and with the same function abilities?
I like the Motul hoodie you've been sporting. Can't find it anywhere online. Is it a one of a kind?
LOVE Gabe's shirt!

Love the shirt Gabe!
Back in the noughties my employers were looking for new products to work with our wireless data technology and decided GPS asset tracking was worth a go. What we created worked well, though it wasn't as slick as Bouncie et al. Potential customers didn't share our enthusiasm, alas... 🙁
I knew Turo was done when he posted the 'true cost' video
I figured it was only a matter of time before you get out of that venture.
It's a hell of a commitment to manage a fleet of rental cars
Love the daily uploads! Wish it was twice a day lol

Glad to see him quit Turo. To be honest, all these lil "app side jobs" are turning for the worst. Instacart, Amazon Flex, Shipt etc. The pay isnt enough to run a car.
Yup, unless you do it for a while, and learn the best way to do it. All these driving apps kill your car so fast. My 2017 Civic that I bought brand new is at 180k miles after almost 5 years and I have done Lyft on and off more part time than full time through those five years
@Lassi Kinnunen 81 depends on how long it takes you to make 20 bucks plus expenses in gas and mileage, so call it 25 bucks. Of for whatever reason it takes you 2 hours to make that much money (it definitely can) then is 12.50/hour worth your off time from your regular job to do it?
@Lassi Kinnunen 81 I'm not disagreeing with you, the only problem I see with some gig jobs is that it's terrible pay with obviously no benefits, and if it involves your own car you're basically losing money beciase you will never make enough money to recoup the usage that you put on it to do the job. When 100 bucks used to pay for more then yes gig jobs were great but nowadays they are terrible
@@marktate2683 Hell, to not spend your earnings on gas its best to already have a full tank of gas. I own a 2007 Honda Fit. Bought it a year ago with 147k miles. Now, it has 189k. I have done sway links, tie rod ends, alignment, tires, oil changes (Liqui Moli Asian and American 5W30), service A&B, a battery and VTEC Solenoid. Still runs great (of course its a Honda). At the end of the day, I'm thinking about just deactivating my accounts and find me a little part time job on the weekends at a detail shop. At least on a good Saturday, I can come home with $100-150 in tips plus same day commission pay.
@Lassi Kinnunen 81 lol or weed money💨🍃🔥
I'm not surprised the 500 and the Dart didn't sell privately. They're both orphaned cars that didn't sell well when they were new. If you had an Abarth with a manual transmission however...
Not surprised that you are bailing on Turo. Question that I hope you will answer... I am considering renting a Turo car for 10 weeks this summer. I don't want to buy a car I only need for 10 weeks. Owner is asking $35 a day for a nice looking 2013 Cruze. We expect miles will be no more than 4000 for the 10 weeks. Since he will get steady income with no cleaning, admin costs, etc for 10 weeks, he should be willing to cut the price. How much should I offer? I think he should still make a good profit at $20-25 a day. Your thoughts appreciated!
Now with Gabe back on the channel, how about some content on his Saturn Sky turbo repair?
9:23 it’s on the lift. Perhaps an Easter Egg?
Can you start uploading to Rumble?
Welcome back Gabe!
Thank you, Sir!👋🏽😉🍻
Still wanna see that Rolls Royce man! I think this might be my permanent comment on all videos. Unless it's sold?
Surprised you sold the Cayenne, it seemed like you were really into daily driving that one. Bummer it didn't work, but I'm not terribly surprised. "Sharing economy" is mostly a way for startups to have you share your assets with them.
The cheap car I rented on Turo had bald tires. Since I needed it for a month, I called the owner and said I'd meet him at a tire place to replace them. He suggested I pay for the new tires myself, then he would "reimburse" me. LOL! Instead, I bought a can of Fix-A-Flat for emergencies and did nothing. Also, since it was a Fiesta with the dual-clutch, it shifted terribly. Last time I ever bothered with Turo.
