Austin, Thanks for the mention of me and the photo of my 16750 at minute 8:18. BTW I was a US Marine pilot when I got the watch in Hong Kong in Dec. '83. At the time they were $900 new in the USA, and I purchased mine at the British Military Exchange during their Christmas sale for $405. GIA recently appraised the watch (full set) for over $20K.
FWIW, this watch actually measures 39.2mm in diameter versus the 40mm that Rolex claims. The great thing about the "matt dial" 16750 versus the more collectible and expensive 1675 is that visually they are virtually identical (with the exception of the stack up order of the 12 and 24 hour hands), plus they are cheaper to purchase, and few can spot the difference.
However, the 16750 with its new movement, improved on the 1675 with the following upgrades.... a 4 hertz movement versus the 3 hertz of the previous model, 100M water resistance versus 50M, a quick set date function and hacking seconds (which the first half of 1675 production did not have).

Good to see you, Curtis! - that's was a great conversation - one of my favorites of the live shows. I do remember you pointing out the size discrepancy - Rolex seems to do that all the time. They have their "on paper" size and then the real size which you have to figure out yourself with calipers.
Interesting about the appraisal. In my opinion they undervalued it. Here in Japan, it would go for much much more!

@@watchsymposium Regarding Rolex and sizes, my GMT is 39.2 and marketed as a 40, yet the 114060 Submariner is also a 40 yet actually 40.2mm. The 124060 is marketed as a 41 yet it's 40.5mm... Go figure.
Interesting on the Japanese market prices being higher. I figured that $20.5K for my watch was ALL the money.

hey austin - the matte dial 16750 was only made up to 1983. 1984 onwards 16750 came with glossy dial with the white gold surrounds. i have both models.

The current GMT's are of course better watches, movement, finishing, etc, but to my taste and is just my opinion, are too glossy for me. I prefer by far the oldest Rolex GMT's and the same thing happens to me with Submarines.
Thanks Austin for a good and informative video.

hey Austin, looking forward to the next live stream!
I took a look at c24 and rakuten at some Fat Ladys, 16760s and there's barely any with the serif bezel and decent looking tritium dials. Wonder if this was a piece that didn't age well or if the pristine examples have already been snatched up already. Nevertheless, I don't think it's the best bang for buck if I were to spend 20k on a watch (as in I'd get much more enjoyment buying other pieces, emphasis on buying more than 1)

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  2 роки тому

I think these are the kind of pieces you go for when you run out of things in the neo-vintage range. Like you said, you could get an amazing 16750 for 25-30 grand, OR you could get a really nice 16710 and 16610. I'd go for the latter 2 pieces because they're going to be more serviceable, more wearable, and give you some variety. But, of course, they aren't going to blow minds like a minty matte dial 16750 with flawless patina!

Hi Austin. Is the Jerry that ordered the Submariner vs GMT video. Don't worry about it. I've fallen away from luxury watches ATM. They are much to expensive for me to even bother with my attention. Keep up the honest work. JL

      Hi Jerry,
I remember - I just pulled up our email thread. I totally understand...the prices have reached a level that I think is bordering on the absurd.
Still, if you want to alter your question or something comes up in the future that you'd like a video on, just let me know - I still owe you one!

Glad to see you back after a few weeks on vacation. I have a 16750 matte dial (recently serviced at RSC) without box, cert and with a 90's bracelet. I also have a 16760 full set (and a BLNR, BLRO and 126719). Was thinking of selling the 16750 but even if you don't suggest buying one without full set I can't get myself to sell it. It is hard to part with a Rolex GMT and break up the collection. That's the problem (or advantage?) with this hobby, it is impossible to sell anything.

These relics are definitely a thing of affection for collector’s, I’ve had several GMT’s and currently own a newer model Root Beer as you know. I have to say those pre -1984 dated watches after owning a newest GMT production just don’t interest me anymore. The very fact they’ve become harder to source in original condition and too pricey considering the improvements made with the newer releases make them a no go in my way of thinking. For the post 1984 model’s with the independent second time zone and hour hands that are adjustable.... it all revolves around aesthetics that become personal preference as well as the fit and feel. If given a choice the larger indices and better lume and substantial bracelets on the latest GMT’s are a game changer. Wether a ceramic bezel or coloured aluminum bezel becomes the defining factor there no doubt each have there appealing characteristics. However all things considered unless a collector can source a mint condition older GMT the better purchase would be these newer releases. I enjoyed the attention and significance to preserving the enthusiasm for those older watches however after owning old and new.....my preference is the most recent version. Cheers 🍻👍

Great information, love Austin’s passion for Rolex, 🤔but I felt like something was missing….. oh yeah, no screaming children crying out for mercy. I believe background noise and kids playing in the background is the Jelly to Austin’s peanut butter.
