This woman reminds me of a conversation I had with my mum over a decade ago about the corporate culture creeping into the county council leadership - all buzzwords and theory, but very little of any use. This is the same culture that installed health and safety policy that led to my dear old mum, in her sixties, out on an empty site (the middle of a field, far from the road) during a heatwave, clad head-to-toe in full hi-vis jacket and trousers, sweating half to death lest she risk disciplinary action. Neolibs and corporates are absolute cancer! They sit in their ivory towers, speaking their esoteric language, making rules that us lowly mortals must suffer for.
The last guy sounds like what you would call a "shill" - old dude gets asked about a successful model of cooperatives, and he turnes into Jordan Peterson like "oh, we don't know, no one knows, how can we know if it can be replicated, oh they are just bitter" and stuff like that. 😂
26: 37 In Serbia you could buy votes very easily. Ruling party is forcing public sector employees to vote for them and take a picture via mobile phone of the ballot. They are distributing groceries to pensioners for free in exchange for votes. In Gypsy areas 100 euros is a vote.
It's crazy how he just claims to the objectivist argument... Obfuscate, confuse, and hyperbole. And did the guy really channel Margaret Thatcher? Seriously. I listen to conservatives. UBI is exciting to consider. But I think implementing it before sector consolidation or regional monopolies are addressed presents long-term dangers. The money will benefit holders in the near term, but over time their spending will disproportionally benefit the current guard of unchecked capitalism. Until locally owned enterprise is the norm, UBI stands to further rob the working class of negotiating power and enriched communities.
Oh Martin Martin, capitalism only lifts all boats when their is a roughly egalitarian spread of economic power. The orthodoxy you represent guarantees oligarchy/cartels. It is little more than feudalism trading in direct labor products for money that has changed, leaving tyranny in place. When wealth becomes concentrated, they establish vast monetary estates that are unlimited in growth, not constrained like land. It is new and deeper form of tyranny. The state doesn’t change the dynamic (see USSR or China), only *democracy and representative governance does*. When growth does not exceed interest payment burdens, an economy is headed to inflation, recession/ depression/ default and utter collapse.
It's the circularity that's weird. Smith earns a wage. It has to go as far as possible. Commutes so wants low rail fares. Supports own trade union which may well affect the interests of neighbour Brown. Needs a job so supports business because frightened of unemployment. Buys food which exploits farmers and third world but enriches supermarkets. Supports NHS tho told by virtually everyone who has worked for it that its wasteful but any alternative certain to be inferior. I could go on all day - we are all winners and losers with Neolib. Macro capitalism DOESN'T PAY ITS TAXES !!!! Recent (BBC R4 prog) stated taxes halved if fair proportionate taxes paid.
The needs of humans are very limited: healthy food, knowledge/education, a connection to society/other people, a caretaker when young, old or sick, some joy and a «mission» (a good story providing meaning). Human wants/will is totally unlimited, and will only grow when fed.
I recently went vegan. I'm rarely hungry and eat about 1/3 of what I used to. I'm also down 25 lbs. Please explain my experience in light of your "unlimited wants" assumption about human nature.
Monopolies of power is what the USSR had, what the robber Barrons had, and what the CPP has and what Russian and US oligarchies have. Putin was put into place to be the Russian Pinochet. US conservatives are striving to install their own. A laissez faire environment especially under own monetary and financial systems converge on oligarchy and oligarchy converges to tyranny. Until democracy effects both the workplace and government, the revolts against tyranny in the 19th century and of the US war of independence will never be fulfilled. Until the concentration of money and property is limited and until the toxic mix of interest + limitless money accumulation and withholding from an economy is realized, debt crisis will plague nations cyclically.
