I like videos done in real time like this because my sister and I make polymer clay things as a sister bonding type hobby and she sometimes doesn't understand that those tutorials that are only six minutes long are sped up so she thinks it can be done in 6 minutes and then we take half and hour to do it and she's like "why does this take so long? The videos was five minutes." So it's nice to see how long it would really take us to do this.

Kaylee Hogness Thank you. The number one complaint on my videos is the length. I have started speeding up simpler items, but things that have a lot of work really need to show the details.

Miguel, lol.... So funny, I had to go watch to see which nails I had. Those were my smore themed nails. I was having my nails done every few weeks. My nails tend to be pretty thin, so I was having hard gels on them. Since I am now learning to play the harp, I keep my nails super short, without any polish.
Your message made me laugh, thanks :)

Thank you for explaining this so well and including tips! I've watched so many of these fruit cane vids as a beginner & no one bothers to mention WHY they're doing what they're doing, and definitely no trouble shooting potential problems. You've probably saved me hours and pounds of clay.....

I read about it in a book by a fimo artist, who said their canes would end up distorted if they didn’t. The few I tried before coming across his were distorted so I tried… and for some reason I don’t understand… it worked for me so I never looked back

Ok... I've been watching tutorials all night... My only confusion is this: my finger nails are barely an 8th of an inch past my finger tips. I still manage to get nail gouges in all of my projects that I have to smooth over(I suck at claw control). How in blazes are these ladies doing this with the super long fake nails and not indenting every single things in sight?! >.

interesting! I watched to learn the colors to blend, however, I think i would prefer to roll a long tube, shape it into a wedge, and cut into 8 or 9 lengths, then add the white and outer colors. That way not so much reduction needed.

Yes I would love to see more cane work. Maybe some hard hard candy type of canes...but I'd be happy with any cane work. I saw some complain about how long the videos you make are, I think they are great if its too long they can scroll through till they are at the part the want. It takes a lot to get all the steps in to a video and your video are some of the most informative videos on clay making I've ever seen. I love how you do even the colors and how you got to that color... Please leave the video length.

Thank you for a very thorough video on making the lime cane. It helps for beginners to be able to see the complete process, I'm not so apprehensive about getting onemade. You mentioned making them smaller for 'fingernails', I was hoping to see a picture of that, it would strick me as a very unusal & attactive appearance.

Arlene Spaulding Here is a video where I actually had a few on my nails :) Thank you so much for the kind compliment too. I find the more canes I do the less problems I have with them. They can be fustrating at first, but get more satisfying as you get more experience with them.

Heather Wells ummmm.....I have a question. When I try to make a cane, when I cut it, it always ends up pushing the clay down. So it doesn't look like anything but a blob. Do you have any ways to prevent that from happening or ways to fix that problem after it happens? Thanks!

    • @heathernwells
      @heathernwells  10 років тому

I will let the canes chill out in the fridge for awhile.
Sometimes it really help to let it sit out a good 24 hour too. If it isn't cold here I wait about 48 hours.
I just pull gently on the side that was flattened when that happens.

You can just bake them in a regular kitchen oven. There will be baking instructions on the package of clay.

I use premo mostly, and I bake an average of 17 minutes each time. It depends on the size, the directions are also on the packages of clay :)

Any craft store should have it, Michaels and A.C Moore are big in my area and they both sell them for about a dollar each, but we wait for sales which are around 3 for a dollar

What clay did you use? If my clay was too soft when making canes, I would refrigerate them 20 - 30 minutes to let them get a little firmer

Chelsea Peterson did anyone ever teach you that if you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say it. If it bothers you to the point where you have to make a rude comment, then don’t watch the video. It’s that simple.
Don’t get me wrong but, rude people is a pet peeve of mine.
