Half way thorugh this video i turned my 7.1 surround sound off and it was way easier to tell which direction a player/scav was walking, talking, or shooting. I have had my surround sound on since i got the headset 2 years ago and in this 15 minute video i could tell where people were quicker and easier than the 2 years with surround sound on. Thank you for making this video!!!
funny you say that, because on my corsair h1500 headset if i use stereo i can only tell difference of left and right, but with my 7.1 enabled i can pinpoint almost the exact location of enemies in games.
Been using the 7.1 on my Senheiser 363D since i started playing, and after getting the map knowledge, knowing the type of surfaces that exist and where people usually come from, i can pinpoint exactly where they are. It's true that the sound as improved a bit since 0.9, but the vertical sound still requires a lot of work, hopefully with steam sound engine in the future it will help utilize all the "sound hardware" that players usually have on their hands.
I've had a different experience. In EfT surround does not work for me at all. When I played BF3&4 it was perfect tho. An admin even accused me of cheating because I was "tracking" players behind walls and prefiring because I could tell exactly when they came around a corner.

In dorm, when someone opens the door a floor above you, it always sounds like it's RIGHT next to you. Also, distinguishing front and rear sounds in Tarkov makes my brain hurt. The sound design really needs some work.
I knew of the 'Turn Your Head' method. But I wasn't actually sure if sound was tracked by the players head, or the player model. Its cool to see that freelooking can actually help you locate enemies. I always moved my whole character.
I have used turning to locate where sounds are coming from but only by moving character which itself makes noise which sometimes suppresses some really important ques. I have only used freelook while running and to see whats around me. Will try to learn to freelook while locating targets by ear from now on! Also few of my friends have bought 5.1 and 7.1 supporting headphones recently. I will make sure to ask them if they have checked if the games they play support that (Tarkov or other games) so they don't f*** up their audio scouting (i'm quite sure some of them just bought the headsets cuz they wanted to buy expensive headsets).
@@samamies88 I can confirm that 5:1 and 7:1 headsets fuck up the sound in Tarkov. I have a 7:1 headset and I had to switch it to stereo mode because it was constantly giving me incorrect audio.
@@susp3kt112 Tarkovs audio engine is pretty crappy (unlike the actual sound design). also 2ch with HTRF is MUCH more precise than 5.1 or even 7.1 on headphones. in PUBG and CSGO i can easily guess from which direction a sound is coming with down to 3 degrees of precision in the worst case. in real life most people are able to guess the direction of a sound with down to 1 degree of precision. thats something you can never achieve with sourround headsets but rather with stereo headsets using HRTF. HRTF simulates how sound would change based on auricle filtering and timing differences between the ears. since you hearing is always only stereo (humans have only 2 ears) and headsets have to deal with heavy soundbleed (reflecting sound inside the earpiece of your headset), surround headsets are basically useless as long your game has a good "Head-Related Transfer Function" Algorithm. with a surround speaker system things are a bit different, since you have the 7 audio sources relatively wide spaced its much easier to locate stuff compared to 2ch speakers and also HTRF doesnt work with speakers at all since it relies on the sound getting to your ear directly with out any bias or timing differences. Lol I didn't notice I moved my character to hear sounds better... until you mentioned yourself doing it, its a good tip if you hear a sounds when youre indoors
You can actually have spectral cue audio with classic headphone if the recording was done on special equipment like binaural microphone. Games like Hellblade use this recording technique and its scaringly effective.
This is really great. The stuff about free-looking makes total sense and I never really thought about it before. I'd love to see/here/read something about the differences between the 3 sound levels when walking 🧐
Awesome guide man, thanks. Agreed on the lack of need for these ridiculous expensive setups. It actually reminded me that I should try turning off the 3D positional crap with my headphones for Tarkov.
I really love the Battle body Sound training, its so simple but the feed back it gives to you is invaluable. maybe further development of the app can include a simple first person fov where you turn around in like a simple room and you have a guess button, when the player hits it an enemy will appear lol idk an idea
Maybe I too can also add some insight to the sound system currently in use in Tarkov. The way it works with footsteps is the game checks for objects between your camera and the other players' feet (collision using raycast?). Thus as long as there is an object with a label or tag - probably using a Layer in Unity - between your camera and their feet, their footsteps will be muffled according to the specific values set to the object. Haven't tested this with gunfire, but It seems the point for detecting collisions is not the tip of the gun but closer to the character's hands.
I've been watching your guides, but i mostly save the videos. I'm paused at 1.43m and just the click on the camera arm made me instantly click the sub button. Sometimes, it's the small things.

I don't know if games not built for HRTF lose quality. I tried Skyrim and Fallout with the HRTF mod and could tell exactly where sounds were coming from. It doesn't replace any sounds in the game, just does HRTF audio.
I 100% agree on the headphones vs body armor thing, I get super stressed when I don't have ears because I know I'm missing a massive part of the puzzle at all times
9:24 yes. Yes, definitely. I tried playing with virtual 7.1 surround on tarkov when i first started out and i had a very hard time telling where people were coming from. I turned it off once to just give it a try and my spacial awareness shot right up.
I have single side deafness and I use a headset with two drivers in one ear. The left driver above and further behind the right driver and the pitch different between the two. I saw an immediate difference in R6 Siege because I knew all the sounds. I'm new to tarkov and it's brutal learning the sounds and working with my headset.
This video is legit how I was such an amazing cod mw2 player i didnt have a headset but i would do things like you explain in this vid. Legit changing your visual point of view also changes volume and Intensity of the sounds in game. Doing this would help me pin point location easily.
Coming from a game like rainbow six siege I was so used to having those vertical queues and I went into tarkov thinking theyd have similar vertical audio cause it seems like most games have full spatial audio now. Most games on my PC do anyways. So getting used to not being able to tell if someone is above or below me has been something that gets me killed alot in tarkov
Scavs are really where I struggle with sound but that's mainly from them spotting me through objects I can't (like a bush) then yelling and giving me an anxiety attack while I scramble in a 360 looking for them.
Going to try this out. By the way the video was amazing and you are really good at EFT. I subscribed and will be watching from now on. Keep up the awesome work I really appreciate it.

@@sovietrussia3632 In tarkov sound goes through floors mate. You enter a building and there is no gradient, the sound magically changes, there are a million more examples. If you do not hear a difference between a game with good sound (e.g. Squad) and EFT you must be a potato.
amazing.... Here I was watching pestily and veritas to learn thinking that their headphones were A-game and that I'd need something like 7.1 to get audio to work in Tarkov effectively. Thanks @veritas you just saved me $400!
I was hoping you'd have some tip for the hearing impaired. I'm deaf in my left ear and it's near impossible for me to accurately locate sounds. I just have to guess based on material sounds and maybe do a quick 360 spin to see if any direction sounds louder than the others. Great video though.
one thing with tarkov and playing vol high enough so you get the full spectrum of all the sounds, it also scares the shit out of you when you creep around a corner at a guy waiting.
People don't pay extra for sound system and expect getting advantage in games. We do it to get better experience via better sounds and immersion. But I see your point with the ear buds.
I actually caught myself doing this automatically during a raid recently. Turning my head back and forth while hearing shots just to pinpoint its position. Crazy.
In real life gunshots are usually much harder to pinpoint because they echo and crack. If youre getting shot at, it's even harder to tell based on sound because the sound of the round whistling through the air near you.
Dolby Atmos for Headphones does a really good job of transferring games audio to have better directional 360 audio, even if the game doesn't support it
I was thinking about trying 7.1 in tarkov especially after seeing your video showing that it's very hard to hear the difference between sounds from the front and behind. Thanks, now i know it's not in the game and don't have to try xD

This makes me feel a lot better about the broken $150 razer headset sitting on my desk for the past 6 months and the $2 earphones currently in my ears.
Im a big sound Wh*re and razer kraken with 7.1 surround have been making me wet for years. I play usually in a squad of 4, all big fps/csgo gamers and im always the1 that hears and pinpoints enemies 1st in tarkov xD best headset imo
@@filipescp96 wayy too much base imo
@@DustyyBoi You can tweak it on synapse as much as it pleases you tho..?
Lol I didn't notice I moved my character to hear sounds better... until you mentioned yourself doing it, its a good tip if you hear a sounds when youre indoors
7:25 "behind me" then instantly proceeds to look forward and never look back again, I would die million times there
Great Video! Nice to see some guides from you again :)
Wow dude. This is a great video man. Thanks for taking the time to make it!
This is the most informational video game guide I've ever seen. Really awesome effort put into this, cheers man!
straight out of the top draw Bud, excellent knowledge and valued advice. Great job :)
Awesome video!! So much effort put in to this single video.
@veritas , this is like a “escape from tarkov class” good work man love your content!
Damn went all day not learning at school watched one veritas video boom knowledge
You can actually have spectral cue audio with classic headphone if the recording was done on special equipment like binaural microphone.
Games like Hellblade use this recording technique and its scaringly effective.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE, how even in Tarkov, Dustin in mentioned :O
This is really great. The stuff about free-looking makes total sense and I never really thought about it before. I'd love to see/here/read something about the differences between the 3 sound levels when walking 🧐
Glad to see someone else sees that good sound design is important
Awesome guide man, thanks. Agreed on the lack of need for these ridiculous expensive setups. It actually reminded me that I should try turning off the 3D positional crap with my headphones for Tarkov.
I came here for Tarkov sound tips but now I've ascended with the knowledge of sound in general.
I really love the Battle body Sound training, its so simple but the feed back it gives to you is invaluable. maybe further development of the app can include a simple first person fov where you turn around in like a simple room and you have a guess button, when the player hits it an enemy will appear lol idk an idea
Hey, i cannt find the sound training
Now this is the kind of content i subscribed for!
Great video. Thank you for this. Must have taken a while to make.
I was actually using my iphone 6 buds for over a year in this game, you would be surprised how good the sound is
thanks for all you do veritas. if you ever have to prove to someone that you've done some community service, link this vid.
Respect from germany, very professional content and analys of the game! Saw your vids long time before but didnt reg your skills.
Would like to See your best fps and best visibilty graphic settings.
I don't know if games not built for HRTF lose quality. I tried Skyrim and Fallout with the HRTF mod and could tell exactly where sounds were coming from. It doesn't replace any sounds in the game, just does HRTF audio.
I honestly didn't expect to learn much from this video. Boy was i wrong.
Thank you so much man
My favourite sound is the sound of you punching your desk in a child-like fit of anger.
I was surprised by your recommendation of Smarter every day. I know Destin's channel quite a while now, happy to see it shared :)
Watching u from Russia, so much new, so much things to use! Thx so much!
Bro you will get 1 million subs if you keep this interstellar shit up!!! Thanks
I usually just hear the whiplash a few seconds before message “head, eyes”
Coming from a game like rainbow six siege I was so used to having those vertical queues and I went into tarkov thinking theyd have similar vertical audio cause it seems like most games have full spatial audio now. Most games on my PC do anyways. So getting used to not being able to tell if someone is above or below me has been something that gets me killed alot in tarkov
Scavs are really where I struggle with sound but that's mainly from them spotting me through objects I can't (like a bush) then yelling and giving me an anxiety attack while I scramble in a 360 looking for them.
This video helped me out exponentially thank you 🙏🏽
This video actually taught me so much.
Going to try this out. By the way the video was amazing and you are really good at EFT. I subscribed and will be watching from now on. Keep up the awesome work I really appreciate it.
Awesome vid bro! I use Samsung earbuds that came with my phone 3 years ago lol. I love them but I legitimately thought it was a massive disadvantage in this game. Turns out I just suck. Thanks for that. Lol
Dr. Veritas with the lessons! Very informative vid
Fantastic video. Thanks for all your work!
bro i never thought about i because i don't have much trouble with the sound, i auto. do this headturn thing... never thought about it like you do. thanks for your great reseach work! awesome person.. greez from Switzzerland
I hear a shot in Arma or Squad I can tell you what gun, what bearing and how far.
This game has got terrible positional sound.
I can do the same in tarkov?
@@sovietrussia3632 It's much better in the games he mentioned, but I think BSG already said they are working on improving it
@@sovietrussia3632 In tarkov sound goes through floors mate. You enter a building and there is no gradient, the sound magically changes, there are a million more examples. The devs know this game has got rubbish sound which is why it will be tossed out for an entirely new sound engine soon. So no, you can not.
When I hear gunfire I flick my mouse from side to side to more accurately pinpoint the sounds direction
I came for a "when you hear this, a player is ACTUALLY here", but stayed for the college lecture on sound.
one thing with tarkov and playing vol high enough so you get the full spectrum of all the sounds, it also scares the shit out of you when you creep around a corner at a guy waiting.
you my good sir earned a sub here and twitch. great guide and app!
This guy boiled sound settings for eft to a science AND his desktop background is a black hole. Mad respect.
Dolby Atmos for Headphones does a really good job of transferring games audio to have better directional 360 audio, even if the game doesn't support it
The professor is in the house!
damn smarter every day. never thought id see a gamer watch that channel
Very good video, thanks for directing me here from your stream.
I want the Android version so bad! Great channel dude, keep it up
I was thinking about trying 7.1 in tarkov especially after seeing your video showing that it's very hard to hear the difference between sounds from the front and behind.
Thanks, now i know it's not in the game and don't have to try xD
