    Back in the 60s we grabbed the gold in mercury until it was in a ball just smaller than a golf ball (7-8 days worth). We cut a potato in half, hollowed out enough for the ball then put it in a pan on a camp fire until all the mercury was gone and you got this weird looking round thing. We did not go near the file! This is obsolete now. Don't try it.

    Thanks for the video, I thought I wanted to do this until I watched the video, but not really into playing with mercury. However, I wondered if just washing black sand with Hydrochloric Acid may release some bonds to gold as well. Has anyone tried the acid wash only, and if so, were you able to recover any gold from your black sand? Just curious, and thanks!

    HNO3 is not to be casual around. Use baking soda to neutralize the HCl, best to do it under an exhaust hood. Hang plastic on your kitchen hood to help draw it, even if it dumps out the top in the kitchen it is being both diluted and reacted while its moving and not going into you directly.

    You don't need to use straight strength nitric acid. Use 2 parts water, 1 part nitric. Heat to about 150 F until fumes stop. Puts merc in solution, then use strips of ordinary al foil. Will drop HG out of solution. This method is the traditional placer miner's method. Works fine. Save on your nitric acid cost. AL is cheaper than CU.

    If I had read things correctly from some books, I think you saved enough black sand with gold that you should be to re-pan a large amount of it in a pan which you should be able to pan out more black sand and concentrate the gold further. Then you should be able to put some mercury into the concentrated gold and absorb all of the fine gold making a gold/mercury button. Then do the acid process with the button to devolve the mercury leaving behind the gold.

      The mercury can be re-used many times, and you don't need a lot. The nitric acid will also last a long time, I used a very small amount as well. If you're running a lot of black sands and plan on repeating the process yeah it will be cost effective for sure. If it's only a small amount of black sands a few times, I'd just throw the black sands away and save the money.

    Hi there, awesome videos, I've got a few requests... People think I'm crazy, but there's different types of black sand depending on where you are located. I get pickers out of my black sand(I get what you got, out of 1 tablespoon(not a pound) of black sand from northern Georgia) I also use a tumbler and reduce to -200 mesh and it's really hard to rinse, but its necessary to do so or the mud will harden into a rock again. - can you PLEASE make a video on charging mercury using as many methods as possible; metallic sodium? 12 volt car battery? 9 volt(fire alarm)? I saw a video on charging mercury using as device which reversed the polarity + 18 volt car battery... My chemist person said you can dissolve the gold out of the black sand by chemically liquidizing it, is that cyanide? There's supposed to be a chemical in production in south America which works like cyanide but is environmentally friendly.....?? Our clubs placer property is where I get it there's plenty of mercury there too. Theres a few weird spots where the tailings have degraded & the black sand crumbles in your hand into a rusty mess...??? HOW? Some sort of extreme oxidizer? WHAT? I have collected more black sand than I can process within my lifetime at my current rate of speed. - CAN YOU PLEASE go to my channel: BLUNDERBUNK urban prospector, and check out my QUICK video to verify that THERE ARE PICKERS IN GEORGIA BLACK SAND? & I'd like to send you some or meet up with you this may when I come out for 14er season & drop some off to you. You got a po box address?

      Hi I looked at your video and see you found some gold in your black sand, nice job! Must be lots of magnetite and hematite there in N. GA. I don't know any other ways to chemically extract gold, just my way. I know there's other ways I just don't know them so can't make a video on those other processes. I do have a PO box address listed in the description of every video. Thanks again for watching -Shane @ KleshGuitars

    I just found a shelf of black sand in a wash created by new construction. I need to figure out safe ways to separate the gold.

    Culd u use a magnetic seperator to seperate the mercury and the black sand

    as long as it isn't organic mercury you will be fine elemental mercury is pretty stable even indoors especially with these small amounts as long as there's air movement you are fine
    go to codys lab to see more about the properties of elemental mercury.

    glad you said not to do this. pouring water into acid is allways a bad idea. the heat generated can cause it to erupt...explode. acid into water is ok b the because the water can dissipate the heat. maybe a magnetic stirring mechanism is best .. vented. mercury ...

    Interesting.. though the way I saw shown was to use a copper pan and spread a thin layer of mercury on the pan with water then add the cleaned back sand, I have never seen the mercury separated in a paper towel it all goes into the nitric acid then using aluminum foil to get the nitric acid to release the mercury after the reaction is done with the foil your pour off the acid and you have liquid mercury sitting in the bottom of the beaker instead of scraping it off of a copper rod

    • @Klesh
      @Klesh  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah it can be done many ways. This is my way, uses the least amount of chemicals
