    Hello my friend, I just started 3 gallon batch of the strawberry watermelon wine, I use three medium sized round watermelon and two bags of 3 lb each frozen strawberry I used black tea for my wine tanning I used yeast nutrient and fermiad o, acid blend three Camden tablets approximately 7 and 1/2 lb of sugar. And with all the fruit 3 gallons of water the black tea all the additives it nearly filled up my 6 gallon plastic carboy.

    Just what I needed: watermelons are hitting the stores and I’ve got massive amounts of strawberries in the freezer. I’ve also been eyeing recipes for rhubarb-strawberry wines and meads. My neighbours are hounding me to come and get rhubarb off them: they can harvest until June 21st because after that, the levels of oxalic acid will start being too high for comfort. They’ve got lots of plants and need to harvest in order to prevent them from growing too big.
    Looks like I’ve got my work cut out for me! 😊

    PS for your information. I also made 3 gallons of the Skeeter p lemon wine and I just transferred that to secondary today. There's still some sugar to eat up and I may of wracked it a day or two early but I just wanted to get it off the fruit and get it into my three 1 gallon car boys I tasted it and it tasted amazing. So even if it didn't ferment anymore I would still be happy with the results but I do believe it will probably ferment a little bit more.

    I am a massive fan of your videos! Quick question: in the banana wine video you didnt make a pulp from the bananas before doing a hydrometer reading. But if the sugar of the banana's (or other fruit) is still in the fruit, how can the hydrometer take an effective measurement? Doesnt it only measure the added sugar then?

    • @HowToDoneRight
      @HowToDoneRight  Рік тому +3

      Thanks so much for watching us. 😃😃 That is correct you are only measuring the sugar added for the most part... but.... there is very little sugar in most fruits to adjust abv much. From my research it is just fractions so natural sugar will not affect abv all that much. Great question. 👍👍👍

      You will love making wine.. so much more variety than beer. Ferment Temps can be just about anything there are high tolerant yeast out there... the cooler storing the better but consistent temp is the most important no light. Put in a dark closet.

    Hi! I’m current making a strawberry batch. Just added my yeast to my one gallon container and it’s been 24 hours. I want to add a little more simple sugar or water because although my potential alcohol percentage is 11% it doesn’t seem like my 2 gallon primary fermentation tank is filled up enough. Can I add more liquid since I’m early in the fermentation process? Or should I leave it alone? Hopefully this all makes sense. Thank you so much in advance. Just finished a pineapple batch and it’s delicious. 😋

    • @HowToDoneRight
      @HowToDoneRight  5 місяців тому

      Oh yeah you can add some more at this point. But oxygen not critical with headspace in primary stage so it is fine if want to let it go... I use a 7 gallon bucket to make 3 gallon batch and works fine. A good seal bucket is most important.

    this video came out at the perfect time.
    i recently bought a watermelon and cut it and bagged it in 1lb bags.
    it's in the freezer waiting for my carboys to be available.
    about how much pulp do you get from a medium watermelon?
    would you say 10lbs is enough for 1 gallon of wine(just watermelon, no strawberries)?
    also do you think adding a bit of lemon extract at the end(during the backsweetening) would match well with watermelon wine?
    also i wanted to contribute something to the channel.
    i'm a maths geek, and i looked around the internet for calculators to determine the exact amount of sugar for the desired levels of alcohol by volume.
    i ended up with the following table of wanted abv and amount of sugar per gallon of water:
    wanted abv cups of sugar per gallon of water
    8% 3 1/16
    9% 3 1/2
    10% 4 1/16
    11% 4 1/2
    12% 5 1/16
    13% 5 1/2
    14% 6 1/8
    15% 6 3/4
    1/16 of a cup is a tablespoon
    what i do is that i prepare the syrup with a bit higher abv than i want, and then before i add the yeast i measure it, and add water as necessary to bring it down to the desired level. it's always easier to water it down a bit than to have to make more syrup to bring the abv back up.
    thanks for sharing your knowledge freely.

    • @HowToDoneRight
      @HowToDoneRight  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for some great info. Yes 10 pounds watermelon is plenty. After fermentation you will have very little pulp left. It will disappear for the most part when I Make it. Keep me posted.

    Hi Todd. I have a question. So I followed your recipe for apple, strawberry, & watermelon wine. 1 gallon each. The apple did everything during fermentation as it should. On the other hand the strawberry & watermelon never made any bubbles come out of the air locks. Both smell as tho they have been fermenting when I open them to stir. Both had very little bubbles in the must. Nothing like the apple. I measured specific gravity after a week & all of them come out the same. 0.99
    Do you think I should just rack them & let them keep going in secondary or discard them? Looking for a professional opinion beings I’m never to all this. Lol. Any help is appreciated!!

    • @HowToDoneRight

      That's perfect .99... some will not bubble like others. Id get them all in secondary. I would also taste they should be very dry with this recipe at this point. They sound delicious. 👍👍

      Just curious if you count the fruit as part of your 6 gallons. Six campden tablets for a 6 gallon recipe but the fruit will displace a lot of water and take up a lot of space. I was just a little confused on the amount of ingredients used. I know you’re not using that much in this video. I was gonna comment on the other one but it’s kinda old and wasn’t sure if I’d get a response. Not trying to be critical or anything. The video was a HUGE help.

    • @HowToDoneRight
      @HowToDoneRight  3 місяці тому

      Nope. Let it go until bubbler slows to about 30 60 seconds apart. Some fruits take longer and temperatures can slow the process down. Don't rush it.

    With something like watermelon that has lots of water inside of it like you said, could you not come back and add water after letting it sit for the first 24 hours if you were still too high? I bet your reading would have been lower the next day.

    • @HowToDoneRight
      @HowToDoneRight  Рік тому +1

      You sure could.... but the amount of sugar in fruit is very minimal and abv will not change very much. Give it a try that's what the hobby is all about experimenting.

      @@HowToDoneRight ok I must have missed it.
      I recently started making homemade wine, and one of the batches I made was 3 Gallons of pineapple / strawberry. Fermented for about 9 days after the air lock no longer bubbled, alcohol test should like 20% which is a bit high but anyway my question is.. after I added potassium and let it sit a couple days I feel like it needs to be sweeter then it is… how do I make it sweeter since the fermentation is over and already added potassium?
